Steve Kidd - President

President’s Corner

April will go down as one of Gold Coast Region’s busiest months. Although events didn’t start until mid month, we had three weekends in a row where both Saturday and Sunday were jam packed with activities. The weekend of April 14 and 15 was a two day Driver Education at Homestead Motorsports Park in South Miami in conjunction with PBOC. In addition to being a safe and

educational track weekend we also collected a sizeable amount of monetary donations for Kids Racing for Life charity. This type of two day format has become our most popular type of DE and has proven to add financial stability to our program.

The following weekend was Zone 12’s multi-region event, “Zonefest”, hosted by Space Coast Region in beautiful Vero Beach Florida. Most of the Zone 12 presidents attended in addition to our Zone Rep, PCA National Vice President, and PCA National Treasurer. Gold Coast Region was well represented and took home quite a few trophies as well as the following top awards: People’s Choice concours, Men’s and Ladies FTD in autocross, Overall in tech quiz, and Ladies Overall winner.

The last weekend of the month offered an autocross on a rainy Saturday as well as a brunch/social on Sunday. Also this weekend provided race fans a chance to join a group that was cheering on the Porsches competing at the Grand Prix of Miami.

One of the things that make the above activities possible is a great group of volunteers. Gold Coast Region has been fortunate to have an extremely committed team of dedicated members that are focused on planning and delivering a complete program. Our region has an unwritten rule where a team member leaving a position will groom their successor, except in the case of elected officers and directors. This type of succession planning has resulted in a good mixture of new and experienced team members that share and pass on important information to incoming volunteers. Gold Coast Region often publishes a “help wanted” section in our newsletter to attract members interested in becoming a part of the team. As with any type of volunteer offerings, GCR’s can be extremely rewarding and enjoyable. Most of our positions offer the opportunity to meet new members, share experiences, and contribute to the good of the club. Please check this month’s Kassette for our current listings and make that call to become more involved with your club. In addition to positions, Gold Coast Region also has a need for services and sponsors to enhance our level of activity. One recent example was Riva Motorsports (Steve and Lynn Bamdas) that volunteered to store our autocross trailer at their secure facility. One of our most pressing needs is an individual or team willing to chair the autocross program in coming years. While this position can be challenging, I can tell you the training will be done by some of the most experienced folks that have even run autocross programs.

As a continuation of the thoughts above, we are always grateful to sponsors that step up and contribute money, support, services or goods to the club. As we move closer to our 50th Anniversary Year (2013) we will be looking for major contributors to both our Zonefest in May and our Anniversary celebration party in December. If you would like to be a sponsor or contributor to either (or both) of these events please contact Steve or Dottie Kidd to discuss the opportunities that are available. These can include, but not be limited to, shirt sponsors, trophy sponsors, food sponsors, and financial support. GCR has always intended to make any sponsorship a win-win situation. Activity sponsorship can help a business reach potential customers in a way that is personalized and targets a specific audience. Please stay tuned for further information on specific sponsorship opportunities.

As we move into the summer months Gold Coast Region will continue to have a full complement of activities. We will still continue to have track activities; however, some of the events may be run in the cooler evening hours. In addition many of our socials will be in the comfort of air conditioning. Our autocross program takes a recess during the hot summer months and generally resumes with two final autocrosses in the fall. Coming up in July is the Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City. While this is quite a bit further than last year’s Parade in Savannah, I can tell you the temperature will be a lot cooler with the opportunity to see something that we don’t have in south Florida . . . mountains! This year Gold Coast Region won’t have our spectacular “Tour to Savannah” orange t-shirts, (thanks Champion Porsche and Pedro Bonilla Jr.) however I encourage members to make this journey to Salt Lake City if you can. Many of you know that in addition to the Porsche Parade, PCA has also started a sort of “mini parade” on the opposite coast. Generally speaking these “escapes” are not competitive and focus on people and Porsches rather than trophies. Rumor has it that an Escape is being planned for Florida within the next several years, very possibly at a popular resort in the middle of the state. In addition to National events I would challenge our members to attend a multi-region event in another part of the country. For the last several years Dottie and I have attended Peachstate Region zone’s weekend “Rennfest” and can tell you we have come back with lots of great stories, made many new friends and returned with ideas that we can use in our activities.

In closing I wish to thank everyone for their roles in making Gold Coast Region the greatest, and especially the activity chairs, board members and directors for all their hard work and dedication. I wish everyone the best of health and their continued involvement in this wonderful organization . . .

provides excellent protection, and is easier to apply. Personally I like the synthetic on the daily drivers, like the wife’s SUV for example. But for the Concours cars I still prefer the Carnauba. I like the way it looks, and the spray detailer I use (Meguiar’s Quick mist and wipe Detailer) does not seem to be compatible with synthetic waxes so check your detailer spray.

As for brands of waxes to be frank I really can’t tell the difference between Premium waxes and less expensive waxes, but in fairness I have not tried these over the top priced ones as of yet, and still experiment with different brands. My good friend David Seeland (who sits in the PCA Technical Committee and answers the tech questions in the Panorama magazine) has won multiple Parades buys his supplies at Kmart, and then buys what’s on sale. In 2010 I won my class in the Chicago Parade Concours and used a $12.00 synthetic wax (Eagle One-Nanowax) recommended by GCPCA member Stan Pearlman who knows a thing or two about Concoursing. I’m sure that there are many winners who use very expensive waxes with sophisticated applications and maybe they are better, but my recommendation is to use what you like, can afford, and makes your car look exceptional.

Paint protection is a basic car care necessity, no matter what type of protection you use. In the next issue we’ll discuss how to prep your paint before you wax. Until then….

Waxes and Paint Sealers

I’m often asked, “How do you get your paint looking so good?’ Of course, the answer is that

it starts with superior paint, which our Porsche cars are fortunate to have. Even though the paint technology has changed over the years, the older cars can still look outstanding and right out of a show room. This article addresses some of the basics of wax rather than how to apply it. We can deal with that in a later article.

Your car paint, like your skin, has pores or tiny little holes. These openings in the paint surface can allow dirt, water and other chemicals to infiltrate, which could damage or dull your finish. Car wax can play a role in maintaining that pristine bright new look. The waxes used for car paint generally come in two forms known as Carnauba and the new Synthetic waxes often referred to as “paint sealants”.

Carnauba is an interesting product and is generally preferred by car enthusiasts and collectors, as it seems to provide a rich, warm, liquid pool-like glow that shimmers in changing light conditions. It seems to blend into the paint, as opposed to sitting on the paint and provides an excellent shine.

It is a natural product, which comes from a type of palm tree in Brazil known as the “tree of life”. This very unusual tree produces a waxy matter on its leaves for the purpose of protection during the long hot dry months. Carnauba is solidified in its original form and serves a dual purpose for the tree. It protects itself against the harsh sun and it repels any occasional rain to the ground to be absorbed by the roots. What’s truly amazing about this rock hard substance is that the carnauba

coating on the leaves still allows the tree to breathe. Remember from Junior High science that green plants take in carbon dioxide and expel oxygen. Sounds like the perfect product for our paint: rock hard, protection against the elements, dispels water and lets our paint breathe. How they came up with this idea is beyond me!

Not all Carnauba is the same, and different regions in Brazil are considered better than others. Carnauba can be harvested differently and is graded on quality, with the northern regions of the country producing the best. The chemical process and ingredients in making it into car wax can vary, but all are similar and no wax is 100% Carnauba. Even though some brands advertize it as such, they are referring to the quality of the wax as even the “very best” waxes are no more than 1/3 Carnauba.

Synthetic car waxes, also known as “paint sealants”, are the creation of modern technology and science. Just like we can create synthetic oil for our engines, synthetic waxes are growing in popularity and growing in popularity among enthusiasts. They can provide a slightly different finish referred to as a “hard as gloss look”, and provides just as much protection, while lasting even longer.

Synthetic wax is easier to apply and can provide protection for 4-6 months, with some brands advertizing up to 12 months. Carnauba waxes, on the other hand, usually offer 6-8 weeks protection. Of course, this depends for sure on the climate, the conditions you drive in, where you store your vehicle, and other variables.

So which type of wax is better? My answer is: use the one you like and fits your purpose and color the best. If you like to drive more and detail less, try a synthetic. It lasts longer,

Fred

Zonefest was held in Vero Beach and hosted by Spacecoast Region this year. All of the Florida regions were represented. If you have never been to a Zonefest, it is like a mini Porsche Parade where PCA members and their families meet for social and competitive events. You can read more about the event on page 12 accompanied by photographs

taken by Rusty Russ, president of Crown Region.

Many Gold Coast members attended the event and took detailed notes because our region will be hosting the 2013 Zonefest. The event will take place over the traditional Memorial Day weekend. GCR members will be busy next year because we will also be celebrating our 50th anniversary. The last event close to this was the celebration of our 40th. More details on these two events will be published later this year.

Speaking of anniversaries, next year will be the 20th year running of the 48 Hours of Sebring. Plans are underway for this very special event that has become the largest club race in the world. If you are not involved, join in with hundreds of

volunteers that make this a special happening for the racers and spectators.

Along with our top quality track events, the drive and dine events planned by our social team have been very popular. In our next issue we will provide coverage of our recent events, La Palma Brunch, Clewiston Brunch, Dolphin Drive and Dine, and the Gunnar Racing Tour.

Our Event Chairperson, Sherry Fabel is requesting your feedback for future event ideas. Please check the article “Calling All Members” on page 29 along with the “Help Wanted” ad for an Autocross Chairperson. If you would like to help the club here is your chance.

After searching for a replacement to our Boxster, I took possession of a 1992 one owner 968 coupe last month. The car is in very good condition and with some detailing of hidden areas will be ready for concourse and DE. Thank you to all that helped me locate the car and provide advice on future projects.

Thank you to our sponsors that help to support our newsletter provide our members with first class service for their Porsches. See you at our next event. Roger

Editor’s Notes

Letter to the Editor

Dear Members of our Porsche Club Gold Coast Region and Surrounding Area,

My words of “Thank You” for your notes of “Get Well Quick” and join the program as soon as possible was very well received, and heeded as I am on the very slow road (straight) but sure recovery.

The open heart for a valve replacement was a rough operation but necessary in accordance to my doctors group opinion.

I have every expectance for a successful recovery to rejoin the group of “people” that made up my past 37 years of activity.

One last thought. Enjoy every day to the fullest as it is later than you think.

Sincerely, Billy G

P.S. My number this year would be #93!

PCA Zonefest 2012

by Steve Kidd

As most of you know Zonefest has been celebrated for many years and is one of the premier multi-region events for Zone 12. In past years, the event was held over Memorial Day weekend and consisted of a weekend long series of events such as concours, rally, autocross and tech quiz, as well as banquets and lots of socializing. In addition to the competitive events, most years offered tours or other family oriented activities for the folks that were more interested in kicking back, enjoying old friends and meeting new ones. Several years ago a decision was made to try and rotate Zonefest to each region in Zone 12 so the same folks would not have to do the work year after year…and also everyone would have an opportunity to travel to different parts of Florida to share this great event. Last year Suncoast Region in the Tampa area hosted Zonefest in conjunction with their 50th anniversary. This year, our neighbors to the north, Space Coast Region, hosted Zonefest in Vero Beach. Next year Gold Coast will host Zonefest in celebration of our 50th anniversary…..but more on that later.

This year Space Coast broke with tradition and held Zonefest about 6 weeks earlier than usual, specifically the weekend of April 20-22. They also used a hotel that was directly on the beach as the host hotel…..another first. I must say the hotel was superb and the staff was very accommodating to the PCA group. Dottie and I arrived mid morning Friday for a Zone 12 presidents meeting that customarily takes place at Zonefest since most zone presidents plan to attend, share ideas and get the latest news from the National office. For this meeting we not only had the Zone 12 representative, David O’Neal, but also PCA National Vice President Ruben Ledesma and PCA National Treasurer, Tom Gorsuch. For those of you that have never attended a meeting

like this it was truly amazing to see the level of long-range planning and event preparation that the club administration accomplishes through the hard work of a dedicated group of volunteers.

To our surprise when we finished the meeting in late afternoon we were greeted by torrential rain and hail warnings. By this time many of the weekend attendees had arrived and were scurrying to find a safe haven for their beloved Porsches. Our GT3 found a hiding place in a 3 story parking garage where we met several other participants and waited the storm out. As the storm moved by and registration opened, we again met up with old friends and new acquaintances while enjoying an adult beverage and sampling tasty food offerings. Saturday morning started off with last minute concours prep that we weren’t able to accomplish on Friday due to the weather. The concours cars were moved to Riverside Park (about five blocks away). As with most Zonefests, this concours offered an impressive display of pristine Porsches that were viewed and judged. While on the topic of Judges, Space Coast Region thanked Gold Coast Region’s Fred & Lucy Kohly, Ed & Beena Kohly and Steve & Dottie Kidd for volunteering to serve as judges and scorekeepers. As the concours was winding down Ruben & Janet Ledesma administered and scored the tech quiz for those wanting to take this challenge. Saturday afternoon offered either an autocross or a poker shopping activity. The autocross was held up the coast at Brevard Community College and despite weather warnings amazingly everyone got three runs with no rain. The day was concluded with a wonderful dinner and awards banquet at the Pelican Yacht Club in Fort Pierce.

Gold Coast Region was well represented with unique trophies in all of Saturday’s

activities as follows:

Concours: Class Winner and People’s Choice to Fred & Lucy Kohly, Class Winner Peter Olliviere, Second in Class Steve & Dottie Kidd, Third in Class Barry & Linda Paraizo

Tech Quiz: Overall winner with a score of 100%, Steve Kidd

Autocross: First in class and ladies FTD Dottie Kidd, First in class and men’s FTD Mike Sanders, Third in class Steve Kidd, Third in class Howard Jacobs

Sunday’s Gimmick Rally was a two-part ordeal with Phase 1 ending at Porsche of Melbourne with refreshments and Phase 2 instructions. Phase 2 was very unique in that contestants had to identify landmarks through a series of photographs and record their odometer reading at each location, with a termination point at Kennedy Space Center in Titusville.

While no one from Gold Coast won a trophy in the rally Dottie Kidd accrued enough points to be crowned Ladies Overall Winner for the weekend.

Next year our region will have the opportunity to plan and host Zonefest 2013 in conjunction with our 50th Anniversary. If you have any ideas, host hotel suggestions, or would like to volunteer to serve on our team, please contact Steve or Dottie Kidd, Zonefest 2013 Chairs.

Mark your calendars for May 24 thru 27, 2013 (Memorial Day weekend) for Zonefest 2013

CryoDetailing is the safest, most effective way to bring your vehicle's under-carriage, engine bay, and other components back to life. This technique will remove the harshest debris, yet won’t destroy soft rubber or electrical com-ponents.

CryoDetailing gets into the hardest to reach places, places that other clean-ing methods cannot touch. Great for restorations, concourse or daily driven vehicles! Any vehicle make or model can be treated!

Over the years, your vehicle collects hidden oils, road debris, salts, and other contaminents that can slowly destroy your vehicle’s undercarriage and add unnecessary weight. Our CryoDetail process eliminates all of these hidden debris and leaves you with a new, “assembly line” finish.

• environmentally friendly

• no residues remain

• removes all contaminents

• no hazardous waste

• removes corrosive salts

renowned clients under the brand "Design by F.A. Porsche". A strong and clear design concept typifies all product designs created in his design studio to date. The credo of his design work was: "Design must be functional and functionality has t o be translated visually into aesthetics, without gags that have to be explained first." F.A. Porsche: "A coherently designed product requires no adornment; it should be enhanced by its form alone." The design's appearance should be readily comprehensible and not detract from the product and its function. His conviction was: "Good design should be honest."

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche received numerous honours and awards both for his work as a designer as well as for individual designs. For example, in 1968 the "Comité Internationale de Promotion et de Prestige" honoured him for the outstanding aesthetic design of the Porsche 911 while the Industrial Forum Design Hannover (iF) voted him "Prizewinner of the Year" in 1992. In 1999, the President of Austria bestowed on him the title of Professor.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche retained a close lifelong association with Porsche AG as a partner and member of the Supervisory Board. For example, even after stepping down from front-line business operations, he contributed to the design of Porsche's sports cars over many decades and repeatedly steered the company in the right direction. This was especially the case for the difficult period Porsche experienced at the beginning of the 1990s. From 1990 to 1993, F.A. Porsche served as President of the company's Supervisory Board, thus playing a major role in Porsche A.G's economic turnaround. In 2005, he stood down from his Supervisory Board role in favour of his son Oliver and assumed the mantle of Honorary President of the Supervisory Board.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche will be buried in the family grave at Schüttgut in Zell am See, attended by his immediate family. An official funeral service will be held in Stuttgart at a later date.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is mourning Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. The Honorary President of the Supervisory Board died on 5 April 2012 in Salzburg, aged 76. Matthias Müller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG, paid tribute to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche's services to the sports car manufacturer: "We mourn the death of our partner, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. As the creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture in our company that has shaped our sports cars to this very day. His philosophy of good design is a legacy to us that we will honour for all time."

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was born in Stuttgart on 11 December 1935, the oldest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche. Even his childhood was shaped by cars, and he spent much of his time in the engineering offices and development workshops of his grandfather Ferdinand Porsche. In 1943 the family accompanied the Porsche company's move to Austria, where he went to school in Zell am See. After returning to Stuttgart in 1950, he attended the private Waldorf school. After leaving school, he enrolled at the prestigious Ulm School of Design.

In 1958, F.A. Porsche, as he was known by his colleagues, joined the engineering office of what was then Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche KG.

He soon proved his great talent for design by sculpting the first model of a successor to the 356 model line out of plasticine. In 1962 he took over as head of the Porsche design studio, creating a worldwide furore one year later with the Porsche 901 (or 911). With the Porsche 911, F.A. Porsche created a sports car icon whose timeless and classical form survives to this very day in what is now the seventh 911 generation. However, in addition to passenger cars, F.A. Porsche also concerned himself with designing the sports cars of the 1960s. His best-known designs include the Type 804 Formula One racing car or the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, now considered to be one of the most beautiful racing cars ever.

In the course of the conversion of Porsche KG into a joint-stock corporation in 1971/72, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, along with all the other family members, stood down from the company's front-line business operations. In 1972 he founded the "Porsche Design Studio" in Stuttgart, the head office of which was relocated to Zell am See in Austria in 1974. In the decades that followed, he designed numerous classic gentlemen's accessories such as watches, spectacles and writing implements that achieved global recognition under the "Porsche Design" brand. In parallel, with his team, he designed a plethora of industrial products, household appliances and consumer durables for internationally

ATLANTA - April 5, 2012 - The seventh-generation Porsche 911 has been named the 2012 World Performance Car. The announcement was made at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, at a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corporation. The Porsche 911 was one of 34 new-for-2012 vehicles selected for the annual awards program.

The World Performance Car honor is awarded each year by an international jury panel comprised of 66 top-level automotive journalists from 25 countries around the world. Jury members are appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of their expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of his or her professional work. Through their respective outlets they collectively reach an audience of millions of automotive consumers in every corner of the globe.

"We are honored that the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors as the 2012 World Performance Car," said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. "For just the seventh time in almost 50 years the iconic 911 has been revised to the point of being a new-generation, and winning this award from a global team of world-class journalists

is excellent validation for the work and dedication of everyone at Porsche."

Lower, wider, longer, more powerful and more efficient than its predecessor, the all-new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera has been refined from the ground up. Delivering 350hp and 400hp respectively, the 3.4-liter 911 Carrera and 3.8-liter Carrera S boxer engines are available with a seven-speed manual gearbox or the seven-speed dual-clutch Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) automatic. When fitted with the Sport Chrono PDK, the Carrera can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, while the Carrera S reaches 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top-track-speed of 187 mph.

Inside the cabin of the new 911, numerous comfort, convenience and ergonomic features create an environment that allows drivers to fully focus on the road ahead, while also appreciating new available audio and communications systems by companies like Bose® and Burmester®. Both driver and passenger benefit from almost an inch more front leg room for increased comfort. The elevated center console allows for faster shifts.

The 2012 Carrera has a base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $82,100; the 911 Carrera S has a base MSRP price of $96,400, not including a $950 destination charge.

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Tech Corner: Good Vibrations

... together with “Kokomo” and “Help Me Rhonda” they are my top 3 Beach Boys songs... but I digress.

I really want to hear some good vibrations coming from my 1998 Boxster’s M96 engine, not just through

my car’s iPod. Soon, I may just be able to do that.

I’m sure you’ve read about the catastrophic failures involving IMS bearings, timing chains, D-chunks and more on the Porsche M96/M97 engines, but what if I told you that you can now see (actually hear) inside your engine with what one Porsche enthusiast soon hopes will be a small, inexpensive listening device to capture your engine’s vibrations!

That enthusiast is Mark Jennings from Inland Northwest Region PCA.

Mark has been a PCA member since 1989 and today he drives a 2002 Carrera 996 which he bought new.

Professionally, Mark is a consulting engineer who specializes in Industrial Equipment Vibration Analysis. He is a recognized expert in this subject and works with the US Department of Energy operating contractors and commercial nuclear clients in the Pacific Northwest on rotating equipment vibration and balance issues. Mark also provides vibration monitoring, analysis and training to a broad list of commercial clients. Mark looks at pumps, fans, compressors, motors, generators, turbines, gear drives, diesels and many other pieces of equipment that rotate and that have the potential to self-destruct due to balance, alignment or high vibration issues.

However, in the past year or so, Mark has been busy collecting and analyzing vibration data on Porsche M96 and M97 engines using industrial analysis equipment and applying standard protocol monitoring techniques.

What that means to owners of Boxsters, Caymans and Carreras that utilize these engines, is a quick way to determine if there is a cam chain, a primary chain an IMS bearing or even ignition issues associated with their cars with no disassembly required.

This vibration analysis is the first in non-intrusive, preventive service ever done on these engines.

Imagine being able to "see", or actually "hear", inside your

engine and determine that one of your timing chains is a bit too loose or that the IMS bearing has started to fail, or even better, to get a clean bill of health because your car has a healthy engine and you can see those good vibrations!

Mark uses a portable, digital vibration analyzer which is basically an oscilloscope that shows an alternating (AC) signal from an accelerometer. The AC signal is broken down by the analyzer into a frequency spectrum through the use of complex mathematical integrations. This provides a snapshot of the frequency peaks created by the components inside the engine. Mark says that “if there is something that bumps, clicks, rubs, pounds or pulses in a periodic manner” he can see it. Based on its frequency Mark can identify the component and based on the amplitude of the signal he can tell how bad it is.

The data collecting procedure is very quick and easy. First, a small accelerometer is secured with a bolt to the bottom of the M96/M97 engine using an existing threaded hole on the engine block, then the car is taken for a drive, setting the cruise control at a specific RPM until the data collection cycle is complete, generally about 60 seconds. Finally the gizmo gets removed from the car and its data is analyzed. The newly obtained data graphs are then compared with those of a “normal” engine of the same model.

I

30 Die Porsche Kassette | June 2012

Page 31: June 2012 Kassette

This year Mark will be collecting and analyzing more data from these engines by attending Porsche gatherings and Tech Sessions in the Pacific Northwest and other regions.

To help him in his endeavor, the Planers of the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit 2012 which will be held in Little Switzerland, NC, have invited him to attend our 15th gathering in early June, where he will attach his “black box” to approximately 60 Porsches including Boxsters, Caymans and Carreras all with the M96/M97 engine. If you want to be one of the lucky ones who gets to hear your engine’s good vibrations, be sure to attend this event. Information at www.BRBS.org.

Hopefully, Mark can quickly finish his “listening device” which he wants small shops, PCA Regions and DIY’ers to have, to be able to complete a simple go/no-go test of their cars. Mark has said that “eventually, if we can collect enough data to show the technology and application is appropriate, we could as an owners group, convince Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) to invest in the technology and training so that cars in for routine service could be spot checked and evaluated for timing chains, tensioners, sprockets and of course, intermediate shaft bearing issues”.

If you’d like a more in-depth and technical reading of Mark’s technology you can read his “996 Engine Vibration Tech Session” which was published in the March – April 2012 issue of NWR’s newsletter: Über Alles.

From The Members (continued)From the Members

The road to Savannah, Georgia (PCA’s gathering for last year’s Parade) was 510 miles, about 9 hours from our house. However, our trip for Parade began 37 years ago back in 1974. Between raising a family, military service, getting a degree and whatever else life throws at you we were not able to attend Parade. I have been a member of Connecticut Valley, Longhorn, Florida Citrus, Space Coast and in 1999 we joined the Gold Coast Region. While attending the six hours of Watkins Glenn I saw the mighty 917’s, 512’s and the UOP Shadow duke it out. It was the first time that I heard the awesome sound that a Porsche engine makes in anger. I was hooked by their unique sound. I knew then that Porsches are a way of life. So much so that when I was in San Antonio, Tx. I worked for Porsche-Audi, just so I could learn how to work on and rebuild 911 engines. It wouldn’t be until 1974 when I bought my first Porsche. After two 912’s, four 911’s, one 930, one 996, one Boxster S, and a 914S, we have at present a 1974 914. It’s owner in 1984 decided to convert it to a 2.2 six and added GT fender flares to it. It’s second owner was not as kind to it, he did add a lot of suspension goodies but he also stripped it down to make it as light as possible for DE service. I acquired the car four years ago and have restored it so it can once again be driven on the street. O.K. what does all this have to do with Parade? Good question! Back in 1974 I became aware of Parade and it became a “Bucket List” item. I would always read the Parade stories in “PANORAMA” and felt cheated that I wasn’t able to go. I was sorry that I had never had the chance to meet any of the Porsche family. When PCA announced that this year’s Parade would be in Savannah, for us it became Parade or bust. Registration time came along and I must admit that being my first time I was certainly intimidated by what appeared to be a very complex registration system. Enter Susan Brown, if it had not been for her tremendous help I think I would still be stuck on the first page. Once I got the hang

of it, it became a breeze. We wanted to do things that would be fun. We entered the 914 in the Concourse and with the help of Michael Lommatzsch it was placed c o r r e c t l y (please keep in mind that our 914 is not a concourse car, but what the heck). My wife Becky and I were looking forward to our Savannah “vacation”. Yeah right! I think we both worked harder that week than our normal jobs. From the moment we arrived at the Trade Center everybody was very helpful. All events ran at their respective time. The food was delicious. All of the speakers were great and entertaining. The 914 did real well at the Concourse and the judges were helpful in providing pointers where the car could be better. To me it was an honor to be able to have my Porsche among all those beautiful cars that I have been reading about for years. We both also volunteered and had a very enjoyable time doing so. After all said and done we had a terrific and memorable week. We are glad that we

finally attended Parade but sorry that it took us so long to get there. Yes there is no substitute for Porsche but then again we learned that it is not only about the cars but also about all the amazing people we met and our mutual love.
