Hello and welcome to the Summer edition of the

WN4 Local Link.

If I had to sum up my summer in 3 words it would look something like this; chilled wine, fresh olives

and glamping (OK that’s 5!).

There is so much to do and feast your eyes on this summer. If it’s not the Jubilee celebrations then it’s the olympics, or for some it may even be the summer festivals. Whatever you are doing this summer then we hope the sun shines for you!

For us it will be a chaotic juggle between family & friends, we will no doubt have our own little Olympic soiree of paella and competitive egg & spoon races with prizes for winners and losers. Thus keeping everyone happy!

With more and more people coming on board we have lots of interesting features to feast your eyes on from art classes to street beach parties. So don’t forget your bucket & spade!

As usual thanks to all the local businesses that keep coming back, showing that keeping it local really does work. Don’t forget if you are a not for profi t organisation, or charity and are running an event then please get in touch and we will do our best to help you advertise your event.

Have a great summer...

Sarah.WN4 Local Link Editor.

The Parkside Colliery Male Voice ChoirThe Parkside Colliery Male Voice Choirwas brought into being at the Colliery to give the miners an interest in something new.

At that time it had a very successful First Aid Team and it was thought that the men could benefi t from some other form of sharing together and it was agreed to form the Choir. It is still going strong some 40 years later. We are a happy bunch, with comradeship beyond measure.

Recent efforts in a recruitment campaign took the form of a “Come and Sing” day which, in total, saw 60 plus men enjoying singing together. From this we now have

eight new members in the choir and the difference in sound is quite noticeable.

We help charities and Churches to raise well needed funds with our Concerts, and, in one held in Leigh, we helped to raise £1,400 for “Whiz Kidz”. A charity which raises funds to provide handicapped children with specially made wheelchairs for their everyday needs.

A short break in Marbella can be a real tonic. The beaches and marina are stunning and perfect for celebrity spotting whilst catching a few rays.

When you are ready for a little sightseeing or shopping the narrow streets and pretty plazas in the old town offer welcome shade. The shops here are small and quaint with tempting displays that are hard to resist. Two that are worth visiting (Deja Vu and Chic Vintage) sell vintage designer clothes, handbags and so much more. Head out of town to La Canada shopping complex with its 150 stores including Zara, Mango and Marks&Spencer. The Saturday fl ea market is an opportunity to try your bartering skills!

Getting around is so easy with frequent, cheap bus services to nearby Puerto Banus, Estepona, Benalmadena and Fuengirola. The boat service to Puerto Banus is a lovely way to visit this chic marina.

There are many types of restaurants including Italian, French and Thai but for an authentic taste of Spain try some paella, tortilla or tapas. Tapas bars are a way of life here offering tasty portions of delicacies such as seafood, chorizos, ham, cheeses and olives at prices that won’t break the bank. There are so many to choose from but worth a look at is Arco a trendy tapas bar on the cobbled streets of the old town.

Marbella has cocktail bars and cafe bars to suit all ages and wallets. What they all have in common is a warm welcome and a vast selection of cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Bars in the marina that may be worth a visit include Punto Faro, Sunset Bar and Tiger Bay.

ou think when you have one child thathaving another won’t make that much difference. However having two children under three is like climbing mount Everest with a breezeblock on your back and that is just the washing.

I’ve just gone back to work after my maternity leave, for a rest! It’s fantastic, I actually get to drink a cup of coffee rather than make it and then realise that its cold as I haven’t had time to drink it. Actually having chance to have an adult conversation without the interruption of I need a wee wee, I’m hungry, etc. etc.

Getting us all ready in the morning is like Mission Impossible. As fast as your getting one ready, the other one has managed to take off their socks and shoes. The other day I realised I had been walking

around all morning with a couple of rice crispies stuck in my hair. Note to self, must check in the mirror before entering the offi ce.

My mum is looking after the children for me one day a week and I’m not sure she knew what she was letting herself in for. She turned up in themorning looking all pristine, hair and makeup perfectly groomed. When I got home from work she was looking like she had been dragged through a hedge. Are you OK, I asked? She replied do you think I could just look after one at a time?

Thankfully my mum has found her feet and is doing a great job, which is lucky as they do sort of come as a package now.To be honest, now that I’m working part time the time that I spend with my kids is priceless.

Just back from the Amalfi coast my Italian Job is done & lusty “sigh” I have a larger love of lemons than previously and did Positano proud on my vivacious silver Vespa.

Vico Equese is undoubtedly unabashed, bronzed sexuality on a beach. Never have I seen such beautiful fl esh. Forget hot rock therapy. This placewas super hot, the bodies were rock hard and the eye candy was certainly a fabulous form of therapy. But if spa’s and therapy are actually your real life mania, they live here aplenty too.

Vesuvius being the hottest of rocks sits in the distance and meditates, she has some seriously fi ery latin blood. When she erupts, she makes Mariah appear tame in the diva stakes. Missoni, Pinko & Max Mara nestle amid tobacco & limoncello grottos. Golden sandals, red pedicures & implants are a uniform. Donatella divas on everycorner della via. I packed bikinis

aplenty as well as this Myla plunging one-piece. To complete the riviera routine dance with a dark stranger in the streets in all your Gucci glory.Conclusione? Un bravo grande for my splendid Sorrentine vacation.

Now my feet are fi rmly back in good old blighty, Glastonbury will be calling. Where I can restore my English country Brit cool to the max. Festival fever rocks the fi elds of the south west - Somerset. And what a summery set there was last year: the Wombles, Beyonce, Coldplay, Momford & Sons to name a few. Glasto fashion is always grungy glamour, with welly wearing girls and a splash of neon. Cute slogan Tees are in abundance and dishevelled hair is a must. Accessorise with a fl oral tent and wellington boots. I adore my Hunters to help me brave the mud in cool style. Sienna Miller, Kate Moss & Alexa Chung, thesegirls have “It” in abundance.

Now that Spring is fi nally here the sunshine, however welcome, does tend to draw our attention to the dust and grime around the home. All of a sudden those hidden nooks and crannies have become dirt traps and a bit cobwebby(or is that just in our house?)

We have been looking at various ideas for eco-friendly and economical products using non-toxic ingredients. Here are a couple that you might like to try for yourself.

Surface Spray (For Kitchen and Bathrooms)Pour one part white vinegar and one part water into a spray bottle. Add the juice of half a squeezed lemon. This spray can be used on shiny surfacesand will act as both disinfectant and deodoriser. No need to rinse.

Mould and Mildew SprayPour two cups of water and two teaspoons of tea tree oil into a spray bottle and shake the mixture before spraying. No rinsing required. The oilhas a fairly strong smell but this will soon disappear.
