From the Vicarage......Many of you will have seen the BathChronicle’s supplement celebrating their250 years. I was especially interested insome of the photographs accompanyingthe articles. I confess to finding two ofthe photographs quite shocking. The firstwas of the mass grave in HaycombeCemetery. Over two nights in April 1942no fewer than 417 people in Bath werekilled during the ‘Bath Blitz’. Thephotograph is a powerful image of thepersonal tragedy and cost of human lifeduring the Second World War right onour doorstep. In the year we rememberthe 70th anniversary of the Battle ofBritain, we are reminded again ofChurchill’s words : ‘Never in the field ofhuman conflict was so much owed by somany to so few’. The Battle of Britain, apivotal turning point in the war, came ata high price with over 500 allied aircrewalone killed. Such a soberingphotograph reminds us how much weowe to these brave young pilots, whomade the ultimate sacrifice serving theircountry. As we know all too well, the SecondWorld War did not bring an end toconflict. There has been fightingsomewhere in the world almost everyday since 1945 and hardly a year whenthe British Army has not been deployedsomewhere on active service. Thesecond picture that shocked me in theChronicle supplement was of thedevastation wrought by the IRA bombingof the Corridor in Bath in 1974. In a

place where it is easy to feel safe andsecure I was reminded that even here weare indebted to all those who protect us,including our armed forces, for themeasure of freedom and security weenjoy; we cannot take this for granted. Aswe approach Remembrance Day, weremember all those who have made theultimate sacrifice and give thanks forthose who continue to serve their countryand defend our freedom.Jesus said ‘greater love has no one thanthis, that he lay down his life for hisfriends’ (John 15:13), and Sunday bySunday, our act of worship in StSwithun’s is focused aroundremembering. We recall together thesacrifice that God, in Jesus, made for us.He chose to come as a man, live amongus and, ultimately, give his life so that wemight have the freedom to know and lovehim. With warmest greetingsJane

Remembrance DayOn November 11, 1918 an Armistice tookeffect across Europe and the Great Warwas brought to a halt. The hideousslaughter of thousands of men stopped.l remember quite clearly as a childseeing bemedalled veterans from thatwar with loss of limb selling trays ofmatches and boot laces, and the policehaving to keep them on the move or itwould be begging. A land fit for heroes!!!These were the youth who had fought forthe freedom of Europe.Within a short space of time our countrywas called to bear arms again. Germanyhad invaded Poland and Great Britaindeclared war in September 19 againstGermany and later Japan. Six years ofrationing, air raids, thousands of civilianson both sides killed. This was a WorIdwar and we have to give thanks to all ourmen and women not only from theircountry, but also the Commonwealth, and later the United States of America, who fought and again gave their lives forour freedom,Honouring the memory of the war deadin this Remembrance Sunday is one ofthe very few things that bind peopletogether as a nation in Britain. Today, thewearing of poppies and the playing ofcertain hymns, have become part of ourconsciousness, part of November inBritain.Sadly today men and women of HerMajesty's Armed forces are called uponto bring about peace in the Middle East,so that people may live in true freedom. But again, at a price. Many have giventheir lives. There have been real acts ofheroism resulting in loss of limb andmental stress.Regardless of the arguments about a'just' or 'unjust' war, it is families who arehurt. The wives and mothers who havelost loved ones, remember their loss

every day of their lives, not justRemembrance Sunday.Tributes are paid at war memorialsaround the country and prayers andhymns sung, wreaths laid and twominutes silence kept. Parades of servicepersonnel, veterans associations andChurch services end the day, until nextNovember? Wreaths, flowers that werelaid seem to disappear. Very few warmemorials have little signs ofremembrance of those whose names areengraved, do we remember?Remembrance Day for the fallen,by Laurence Binyon. They went with songs to the battle. Theywere young.Straight of limb, true of eye, steady andaglow. They were staunch to the end againstodds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe,They shall not grow old, as we who areleft grow old.Age shall not weary them , Nor the yearscondemn. At the going down of the sun and in themorning We will remember them.Lest we forgetBill Burlton R.A.F 1938/46

Pepperpot PedallersBack in September five dads fromBathford decided to cycle part of theWest Country Way, a 150milesSustrans route on and off road, fromBath to Barnstaple, to raise money forPepperpot the local Preschool inBathford, where all their children attendor had attended in recent years. The dads cycled for 2 days throughsome of the West Country’s mostbeautiful countryside. From Bath theyrode to Charterhouse and then up intothe Mendips before descending intoWookey Hole. A snapped chain didn’tdeter them and after a quick fix in Wellsthey were on their way to Glastonbury. From Glastonbury they rode throughBridgwater (attending to another bikemalfunction) to Taunton and then upinto the hills of Exmoor and on toDulveton. From there they endured a hellishascent, where all except one wasforced to dismount, to reach the highestpoint of The Exmoor National Park andsome breathtaking views. The end wasnow in sight and they rode down intoBarnstaple, exhausted but with a hugesense of satisfaction and achievement.Through the physical determination ofthe dads and the monumental effort oftheir wives and members of Pepperpotthe ride raised over £1,000.00 for thepreschool.Sue Costello who has been runningPepperpot for 20 years said she wasthrilled and delighted with the moneyraised and wanted to thank all the dadsso much for their hard work, andeveryone who supported them. The money raised will go towardsredesigning the outside space to makesome natural shade areas and shealso wants to buy some
