FundaMentals to Better shotsAre you struggling to hit solid shots? Sometimes all ittakes to find your groove is a good swing thought. Trythis: Keep your height throughout your swing. Feel tall bykeeping your spine straight when you hit shots. This willhelp you maintain the width of your arms and prevent youfrom scooping the ball. Here’s one more thing to thinkabout: Where is your weight during your swing? Theworst place is on the heels. You can’t play good golf fromthere. Make good practice swings with your weightdistributed more toward the balls of your feet. Feelyourself standing tall with your weight properly balancedwhich will produce more consistency. If you have anyquestions, please feel free to ask any of our staffprofessionals for help.

Course UpdateNow that mother-nature has
been cooperating by providing uswith much needed warmertemperatures we have been able togrow-in many of the bare spots onour greens that occurred in earlyspring. We have also been re-sodding many of the larger barespots on some of the greens. At theend of April we applied curfew tothe greens complexes to helpreduce the concentration levels ofnematodes in the soil. Thatprocess involved the slit injectionof the curfew pesticide into thegreens and resulted in the parallellines that were visible afterapplication. Nematodes are smallinsects that feed on grass roots andif concentration levels are too high, browning and bare spots fromstress can result due to the reducedgrowing depth of the Bermudagrass roots. Our plan is tocontinue to roll the greens withevery mowing and to fertilizethem frequently to encouragegrass growth and coverage. Wewill continue to top dress (withsand) the sodded areas of the
greens in an effort to grow-in theseams of the sod and allow the ballto roll smoother. And, we willcontinue to fertilize the greens asneeded to increase grass growthand coverage on our greens. Wewill continue to put every effortinto improving the overallcondition of the greens.
Beginning in mid-June, we willbe resurfacing the 2nd half of theputting green with mini-verdeBermuda grass, using a no-tillsprigging process that we plan toutilize for the future resurfacing ofgreens on the golf course. We havebeen very encouraged by the mini-verde grass that was implementedon the 1st half of the putting greenlast year handled the severe winterso well, especially compared to theolder tiff-dwarf surface. The mini-verde grass has shown much lesssigns of stress and has maintaineda much thicker coverage to date. The resurfacing of the 2nd half ofthe putting green will consist ofkilling the existing tiff-dwarf grasswith two applications of a non-select herbicide (roughly 7 days
apart), then we will aerify andverti-cut the green to break up theleft over organic material, apply afumigant to the soil forsterilization (which will result inthe closing of the entire puttinggreen for approximately 1 week),and then sprig the surface withmini-verde bermuda grass forgrow-in. After sprigging occurs, the green will be heavily watered(approximately every hour for oneweek) and then watering regularlyuntil the grow-in is complete.Once the sprigging is complete, the other half of the putting greenwill re-open for use, but theresurfaced portion of the greenwill remain closed until the grow-in is complete. We look forward tocompleting the resurfacing of theputting green this summer andreopening the entire green in lateAugust.
Feel free to contact me with anyquestions regarding the golfcourse.

Coosaw Creek: An affordable country club lifestyleby Chris Dailey
If you thought living in a gated com-munity with a complete country
club lifestyle was too expensive, you may want to look at Coosaw Creek in North Charleston.
The community, started about 20 years ago, continues to see strong in-terest from people who want country club amenities and services at an af-fordable cost.
Since 2010, Coosaw Creek has re-quired new residents to become full members of the club. But that hasn’t slowed sales in the community of about 600 homes.
In fact, the community gained more than 150 new club members over the past four years, a period that included at least a couple years slowed by the recession. Last year alone, Co-osaw Creek welcomed nearly 50 new members, and sales have been just as brisk this year.
The community has gone from about 80 homes for sale just a few years back to about 20 now. About nine home sales are now pending.
Coosaw Creek was created in the early 1990’s by the Greenwood De-velopment Corporation, which has created communities throughout the Southeast. The Coosaw Creek golf course opened in 1993.
In 2006, the club membership pur-chased the club from Greenwood, and in January of 2010, the club imple-mented the full membership require-ment for new residents.
Now the club has more than 600 members total and nearly half are full members. The number of full mem-bers increases each year as new resi-dents move in.
Mike Benner, General Manager and Director of Golf at Coosaw Creek, says residents seem to appreciate how much they get with their all-inclusive membership, and the fact that there
are no hidden fees or assessments. The member-owned club works to avoid dues increases and does not take on debt for major improvements.
“We have tried to maintain an af-fordable membership,” says Benner. “For what the membership includes, I don’t think you can get a better bang for your buck.”
The membership includes an Ar-thur Hills-designed course, rated 4 stars by Golf Digest Magazine, a full service pro shop and clubhouse and natural grass practice facilities.
Club members enjoy free unlim-ited greens fees, preferred tee time reservations, and groups and events

for all types of players. There are six blitzes each week with groups for seniors, women, new golfers and ad-vanced golfers. Walking the course is free for members, and they enjoy free range balls, lockers, golf bag storage and handicap fees.
The Coosaw Creek golf course is open to non-members, although the most popular playing times are re-served for members. The course does not schedule outside tournaments on the weekends and pace of play is maintained at close to 4 hours.
Coosaw Creek has plenty to offer non-golfers as well.
The community has a resort-style pool facility with a junior Olympic pool, toddler pool and bath house. Other amenities include tennis courts, a basketball court and large play-ground. The Coosaw Creek swim team is the reigning city champion and draws about 150 participants.
The 10,000-square-foot clubhouse has dining and lounge facilities, and the club has a busy and varied sched-ule of programming every week from comedy, murder mystery, bingo and trivia nights to big seasonal and hol-iday events.
“We want everyone to participate in any activity they want,” says Ben-ner. “You’re getting the whole coun-try club atmosphere when you come to Coosaw Creek, and then it’s up to you how little or how much you want to participate.”
To celebrate Coosaw Creek’s 20th anniversary last year, the community held a big event with food and drinks,
live music, a host of activities for kids
event was so popular, drawing more than 600 people and a couple hundred kids, that it will now be held each year as a “back-to-school bash.”
“It literally was like a carnival at-mosphere. Almost everyone in the community came out for it,” said Ben-ner.
Aubrey Bell, president of the 9-member Coosaw Creek Board of Directors, says he was “tickled to see so many kids there,” and he’s pleased to see the community getting younger each year as more and more families move in. Currently, about 17 percent of members are under 45 years of age, 40 percent are 46-60 and 44 percent are 61 or older. The median age is 58.
Bell says he’s lived at Coosaw Creek for 13 years, and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As president, he helps guide the board to best represent the interests of club members. Every-one on the 9-member board is an eq-uity club member.
“We make sure there are no sur-prises. We’re not going to saddle members with debt,” he says. “Any new capital improvement in excess of $50,000 has to be voted on by the eq-uity members.”
Bell credits Benner and the staff for helping make Coosaw Creek one of the rare country clubs in the coun-try that makes money. He says only about 7 percent of clubs nationwide
club, allowing the board to routinely make improvements to facilities, in-
Coosaw Creek Country Club fea-tures a resort-style pool, large play-ground area, tennis courts and more.
frastructure and the course.Over the past few years, Bell says
the board has made it a high priori-ty to make Coosaw Creek feel even more like a country club. He says
“downtown quality” food, and staff works hard to provide country club service for all members.
“We wanted to make a member feel like a member of a country club,” says Bell. “The best thing we have going for us here is the staff we have at Coosaw Creek. Whether you’re walking up to get your clubs or to get a Coke, you feel like a member of a
country club.”He adds that the annual Patrick
Beale Memorial Golf Tournament at Coosaw Creek is one example of how members of the community come to-gether to help each other. “This is a true community,” he says.
For more information about mem-berships, or to take a tour of the club and receive a complimentary round of golf, contact Director of Member Ser-vices Karen Vaughn at 843-767-9000 ext. 207.
