I thought I was going to die when we went over a ten foot waterfall. by Lee Robirds, Congregational Nurse STAT FACTS

Summertime…and the livin’ is easy ~ Thoughts run to outside activities, time spent on or near the

water, grilling, friends, etc. Children are out of school and hopefully can get their eyes pried away

from their favorite electronic device. Medical professionals recommend that children get at least

one hour of moderate activity daily. Moving thumbs and fingers to play video games doesn’t

count; they need to move major muscle groups in their legs, arms, and torso.

The more popular outdoor activities include bicycles, skates, scooters, and skateboards. Every sin-

gle major medical group endorses children wearing helmets when using any of these toys. How-

ever, over 40% of parents do not make their children wear helmets. Latest statistics state that an av-

erage of 50 children per hour go to the Emergency Room for mostly bicycle-related accidents.

That’s 1200 children per day – 35,000 children per month. And the vast majority of bicycle-related

injuries are head injuries.

So why don’t children wear helmets? Almost half of all parents don’t think it’s necessary. Some chil-

dren say the helmets are uncomfortable. A poorly-fitted helmet can be uncomfortable. The helmet

should fit tightly enough that it doesn’t wiggle around, but loose enough that it’s not putting pres-

sure on the child’s head. The helmet should always be buckled under the chin so that it won’t fall

off in the event of an accident.

Some children complain that their friends don’t wear helmets, and they don’t want to look out of

place. I suggest that all parents join together to insist that all the children in the group wear helmets

at all times when engaging in this group of self-powered toys.

The good news is that there are fewer injuries reported from bicycles, skates, and skateboards than

in recent years. Apparently someone is getting the message! However, scooter injuries are up by

40%. It’s unknown why parents and children feel helmets are unnecessary with scooters. Is it be-

cause scooters convey a sense that the child has more control over the toy, or because it’s a newer

toy and the idea of helmet use isn’t connected with it yet.

Words of wisdom: Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, and using skates, scooters, and skate-

boards. And this goes for both children and adults. Don’t become a summertime statistic.

MAIN STREET UMC HISTORY MOMENT Did you know that our Main Street Church sanctuary is

approaching its 100th year? The date of the first service

in the new building was November 16, 1918, significant

because it was the first Sunday after Armistice Day and

the end of World War I. We will celebrate this birthday

of the building (not of the church) in November, 2018.

This was the third church building for Greenwood’s

Main Street Methodist Church. The second, occupied in

1897, was outgrown very quickly and had to be demol-

ished to make way for the current one.

Be on the lookout for future notes in The Connection

from the History Committee as this important milestone

approaches.

Restoration of Windows in the

Drake Classroom

Have you noticed that the stained

glass windows in the Drake classroom

have been removed? The windows

have been scraped, painted, and

the disintegrated sills replaced. The

stained-glass windows are currently

being restored and will be installed at

a later date. This is just one of the

many projects the Board of Trustees is

currently doing to improve structural

work in the church.

A FEW NOTES FROM JOHN

A few Sundays ago, I shared this story of the widely-known praise song “The Heart of

Worship” by Matt Redman in the early service. It’s a great story about the true meaning of worship:

The song dates back to the late 1990s, born from a period of apathy within Matt’s home

church, Soul Survivor, in Watford, England. Despite the country’s overall contribution to the current

worship revival, Redman’s congregation was struggling to find meaning in its musical outpouring at

the time.

“There was a dynamic missing, so the pastor did a pretty brave thing,” he recalls. “He de-

cided to get rid of the sound system and band for a season, and we gathered together with just

our voices. His point was that we’d lost our way in worship, and the way to get back to the heart

would be to strip everything away.”

Reminding his church family to be producers in worship, not just consumers, the pastor, Mike

Pilavachi, asked, “When you come through the doors on a Sunday, what are you bringing as your

offering to God?”

Matt says the question initially led to some embarrassing silence, but eventually people

broke into a cappella songs and heartfelt prayers, encountering God in a fresh way.

“Before long, we reintroduced the musicians and sound system, as we’d gained a new per-

spective that worship is all about Jesus, and He commands a response in the depths of our souls no

matter what the circumstance and setting. ‘The Heart of Worship’ simply describes what oc-

curred.”

When the music fades, all is stripped away, and I simply come / Longing just to bring some-

thing that’s of worth that will bless your heart… / I’m coming back to the heart of worship, and it’s

all about You, Jesus

Redman remembers writing the song quickly in his bedroom soon after the church’s journey

together, with no grand intentions, by any means, for it to become an international anthem. He

viewed the words simply as his personal, subjective response to what he was learning about wor-

ship.

But when Matt shared “The Heart of Worship” with Pilavachi, the pastor suggested making a

few small adjustments to the lyrics so any member of the church could relate to it as well.

Following Matt’s original release, “The Heart of Worship” became a new standard of the

modern worship music movement, sung by fellow artists, choirs, and church families alike.

Whether we’re singing praise songs or hymns, our worship should focus

on honoring Christ. Let’s have a summer surge instead of a summer

slump!
