Worshipping Serving Building Welcoming
June 2017 Vol. VI No. 6
“LOOKING BACK, LEANING FORWARD” Several times as a younger man I took youth groups white water rafting on the Chattooga and Ocoee rivers. We launched our rafts in smooth waters, practiced some basic skills - like getting hauled back in after you fall out, then headed downstream. Soon white water was ahead, and my adrenalin began pump-ing. The initial set of rapids were a breeze, but we were warned about the Class 2 and Class 3 rapids we’d face after lunch. My, my! I thought I was going to die when we went over a ten foot waterfall. But the raft did its job and popped back to the sur-face as several non-Baptist expletives were uttered (by others than myself!) that I trust the Lord took as desperate prayers, the kind found on black boxes after an airline crash. Lori and I are now in a two-person kayak, and we see white water ahead. The current is picking up speed and we’re trying to stay afloat and pointed in the right direction as we face a new set of challenges. We’ve never done this before! We look back over forty years of serving local churches with deep gratitude for the opportunities we’ve been afforded and the good people we’ve served. Especially memorable are our first four churches, planting a new church in Columbia from scratch, two ten-year appointments, Lori getting her Master’s Degree and National Teacher Boards, getting Daniel and Ellen through college and launched, my work chairing a mission
agency, publishing two books, and working for the spiritual and theological renewal of United Metho-dism. It’s been a good ride. But life is about to change. We will buy and outfit a home. I will have my research library in big room upstairs with custom bookcases by Glenn Williams! We will join a local church as participants, givers, and servants. We will have more time for family needs and neglected projects. We will invest in a neighbor-hood instead of leaving in the dark of morning and returning in the dark of evening. We will explore the mountains, going fast around curves in Lori’s Z3! We will restore the long-neglected habit of morn-ing devotions with each other. I am forming a charitable foundation to support my work of writing books, offering seminars for pastors, and working overseas in Kenya and Honduras with Ellesor Holder helping me with a logo. We will receive the Main Street newsletter and mark the good things that will happen under the leadership of your new leader, Pastor James McCoy-Bruce. James and I are already working on an article for the Advocate on how to have a good transition. I cannot say enough about how gracious James has been to come to Greenwood several times to meet with staff and just this past Tuesday to attend a training event with us at Anderson University. He’s even taking a month of study leave and working with a coach on new skills for a new appointment. We will keep you in our prayers. Our last Sunday is June 18, and the text is Romans 16:1-27. The movers come on June 20. We will be back and forth after that, and James and his family arrive June 28. You have been a gracious and supportive bunch of Christians disciples. Challenges are ahead for all of us, so keep praying and keep paddling! Pastor Phil

The Celebrate Recovery Leadership Team that includes Howard Thomes and Sharon Britz, is thankful and much appreciative for your prayers and gifts.
We are entering into our 9th week, and mak-ing midstream adjustments to the content in the time we spend together each Friday eve-ning.
Those who come for fellowship, worship and group discussions, are contributing greatly in sharing ideas and assistance.
Please keep us in your prayers as we adapt to
our new friends and they to us, building
bridges to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
While there are many recovery venues in
Greenwood, Celebrate Recovery offers a re-
covery that is Christ-centered.
Again, thank you, and may God bless you and keep you securely in the palm of his hand. Come and visit Friday evening at 5:45 pm in the fellowship hall or volunteer to pre-pare simple sandwiches for a meeting. Sand-wiches can be peanut butter or egg or tuna salad. Your assistance would be greatly ap-preciated if you are so moved.
As a side comment, some of our members may want to come along as we visit the women's recovery homes. I can promise you an experience that will lift you up. Perhaps God has a ministry/mission for you.

by Lee Robirds, Congregational Nurse STAT FACTS
Summertime…and the livin’ is easy ~ Thoughts run to outside activities, time spent on or near the
water, grilling, friends, etc. Children are out of school and hopefully can get their eyes pried away
from their favorite electronic device. Medical professionals recommend that children get at least
one hour of moderate activity daily. Moving thumbs and fingers to play video games doesn’t
count; they need to move major muscle groups in their legs, arms, and torso.
The more popular outdoor activities include bicycles, skates, scooters, and skateboards. Every sin-
gle major medical group endorses children wearing helmets when using any of these toys. How-
ever, over 40% of parents do not make their children wear helmets. Latest statistics state that an av-
erage of 50 children per hour go to the Emergency Room for mostly bicycle-related accidents.
That’s 1200 children per day – 35,000 children per month. And the vast majority of bicycle-related
injuries are head injuries.
So why don’t children wear helmets? Almost half of all parents don’t think it’s necessary. Some chil-
dren say the helmets are uncomfortable. A poorly-fitted helmet can be uncomfortable. The helmet
should fit tightly enough that it doesn’t wiggle around, but loose enough that it’s not putting pres-
sure on the child’s head. The helmet should always be buckled under the chin so that it won’t fall
off in the event of an accident.
Some children complain that their friends don’t wear helmets, and they don’t want to look out of
place. I suggest that all parents join together to insist that all the children in the group wear helmets
at all times when engaging in this group of self-powered toys.
The good news is that there are fewer injuries reported from bicycles, skates, and skateboards than
in recent years. Apparently someone is getting the message! However, scooter injuries are up by
40%. It’s unknown why parents and children feel helmets are unnecessary with scooters. Is it be-
cause scooters convey a sense that the child has more control over the toy, or because it’s a newer
toy and the idea of helmet use isn’t connected with it yet.
Words of wisdom: Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, and using skates, scooters, and skate-
boards. And this goes for both children and adults. Don’t become a summertime statistic.
MAIN STREET UMC HISTORY MOMENT Did you know that our Main Street Church sanctuary is
approaching its 100th year? The date of the first service
in the new building was November 16, 1918, significant
because it was the first Sunday after Armistice Day and
the end of World War I. We will celebrate this birthday
of the building (not of the church) in November, 2018.
This was the third church building for Greenwood’s
Main Street Methodist Church. The second, occupied in
1897, was outgrown very quickly and had to be demol-
ished to make way for the current one.
Be on the lookout for future notes in The Connection
from the History Committee as this important milestone
approaches.
Restoration of Windows in the
Drake Classroom
Have you noticed that the stained
glass windows in the Drake classroom
have been removed? The windows
have been scraped, painted, and
the disintegrated sills replaced. The
stained-glass windows are currently
being restored and will be installed at
a later date. This is just one of the
many projects the Board of Trustees is
currently doing to improve structural
work in the church.

A FEW NOTES FROM JOHN
A few Sundays ago, I shared this story of the widely-known praise song “The Heart of
Worship” by Matt Redman in the early service. It’s a great story about the true meaning of worship:
The song dates back to the late 1990s, born from a period of apathy within Matt’s home
church, Soul Survivor, in Watford, England. Despite the country’s overall contribution to the current
worship revival, Redman’s congregation was struggling to find meaning in its musical outpouring at
the time.
“There was a dynamic missing, so the pastor did a pretty brave thing,” he recalls. “He de-
cided to get rid of the sound system and band for a season, and we gathered together with just
our voices. His point was that we’d lost our way in worship, and the way to get back to the heart
would be to strip everything away.”
Reminding his church family to be producers in worship, not just consumers, the pastor, Mike
Pilavachi, asked, “When you come through the doors on a Sunday, what are you bringing as your
offering to God?”
Matt says the question initially led to some embarrassing silence, but eventually people
broke into a cappella songs and heartfelt prayers, encountering God in a fresh way.
“Before long, we reintroduced the musicians and sound system, as we’d gained a new per-
spective that worship is all about Jesus, and He commands a response in the depths of our souls no
matter what the circumstance and setting. ‘The Heart of Worship’ simply describes what oc-
curred.”
When the music fades, all is stripped away, and I simply come / Longing just to bring some-
thing that’s of worth that will bless your heart… / I’m coming back to the heart of worship, and it’s
all about You, Jesus
Redman remembers writing the song quickly in his bedroom soon after the church’s journey
together, with no grand intentions, by any means, for it to become an international anthem. He
viewed the words simply as his personal, subjective response to what he was learning about wor-
ship.
But when Matt shared “The Heart of Worship” with Pilavachi, the pastor suggested making a
few small adjustments to the lyrics so any member of the church could relate to it as well.
Following Matt’s original release, “The Heart of Worship” became a new standard of the
modern worship music movement, sung by fellow artists, choirs, and church families alike.
Whether we’re singing praise songs or hymns, our worship should focus
on honoring Christ. Let’s have a summer surge instead of a summer
slump!
