One Nation Under God / Fly the Flag

Our goal with these programs is to increase the knowledge and understanding of and promote the proper displaying, respect and care of our national sovereign. We are starting a drive and asking all councils in the state to fly their flags at the council home as well as from their personal homes during the year, especially on the following dates:

Independence Day, July 4 Christmas Day, December 25 Labor Day, September 4 New Year’s Day, January 1 Patriot Day, September 11 Martin Luther King Day, January 15 US Air Force Birthday September 18 Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12 Columbus Day, October 9 Presidents Day, February19 US Navy's Birthday, October 13 Washington’s Birthday, February 22 United Nations Day, October 24 Armed Forces Day, May 19 Election Day, November 7 Memorial Day, May 28 US Marine Corps Birthday November 10 D-Day June 6 Veteran’s Day, November 11 Flag Day, June 14 Thanksgiving Day, November 23 US Army Birthday June 14 Pearl Harbor Day, December 7

We feel that our display of the flag of our nation at these times will renew and increase everyone’s patriotic feelings. Hopefully remembering what the day stands for, rather than another shopping spree. In addition, the State Council has a pennant project to preserve the phrase “One Nation Under God” in our Pledge of Allegiance. We are urging all members to support this project by purchasing the pennant and flying it under their flag at home, at Council homes, at ntheir own homes and Churches, and asking their Townships to fly them also. By promoting this project we will be continuing the commitment that started when we first introduced, back in April of 1951, the amendment to include this phrase in our national pledge. Our nation and its citizenry needs this reminder more than ever to reinforce the support of our men and women who now and in the past have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedoms. We believe that God does have a great deal to do with the preservation of our peace and the protection of our country. A better understanding of our national standard will preserve and increase our pride and respect for the flag of our country State Chairman John A. Gazis, FDD 249 Leswing Drive Brick, NJ 08723 (732) 581-2905

Brothers, The end of the fraternal year is quickly approaching. During the month of June we are asking every District Deputy to run a first degree in his district. This will give every council the opportunity to fulfill their quotas for STAR COUNCIL. We should be reviewing our STAR COUNCIL CHECKLIST:

1. Service Program Personnel Report – Form #365 2. Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity – Form #1728 3. McGivney Award – Membership quota 4. Founders Award – Insurance quota 5. Columbian Award – Form #SP7 6. Council in good standing

If you have not fulfilled this checklist you definitely have time to do it but ACT NOW. If you need a member, run a drive and get him to a degree immediately. If you need insurance, reach out to your insurance agent. If you need to run an activity, you still have time. Make sure all of your paperwork is in order and most importantly that your council is in good standing. Take advantage of the Incentive Plan from the State and Supreme listed below:

1. For each member that a Council recruits between July 1, 2016 & June 30, 2017, less suspensions, that Council will be paid $10.00 per new/reactivated member from the state council (net total) The amount will be issued as a credit towards their state per capita bill mailed in September.

2. For each new member or reactivated member, the sponsor will be entered into a state drawing at the end of year Grand Knights meeting. Copy of the form 100 to be sent to the State Membership Director. (Prizes to be determined)

3. For Councils that achieve the highest membership intake by diocese and by membership size will be invited to the end of the year Founders Day Dinner. (More information and the criteria to come)

Supreme has again brought back the $4.50 per billable member incentive program for those Councils that reach STAR COUNCIL. Now is the time to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. If you need help please do not hesitate to call me or a member of the Membership Team. We will be more than happy to help you. For my wife and I this has been a great privilege to work with everyone in the State and all the Councils.

Your friend in Christ, Mike Vaclavicek, FDD Membership Director “Protecting God’s Kingdom

Understanding a Special Needs Trust Today nearly 57 million Americans have disabilities. About half of them require care throughout the person’s lifetime. The cost of raising a healthy child can top $250,000 from birth to age 18. The cost of raising a special needs child can be as much as ten times that and can extend until past adulthood. A Special Needs Trust, which can also be called a Supplemental Needs Trust, is a tool that families can use to help provide for their special children and still allow them to qualify for Supplemental Security Income, (SSI), Medicaid and other government programs. This type of trust is a critical tool needed to ensure the care necessary is available to enhance the life of the disabled family member. Here are a couple of things to do and to keep in mind….

x Name a guardian, who is going to be responsible for your child when you are gone;

x Write a will, and make sure that the assets are distributed in such a way as to not financially harm the disabled family member

x Decide where your disabled child is going to live after you’re gone x Identify a trustee who is responsible for managing and distributing assets held in

the trust x Identify the best way to fund the trust x Set up a special needs trust with a qualified attorney

There are strict government rules about the assets that a disabled person may own and the exclusions that could keep that family member from getting health coverage and other benefits. Your Knights of Columbus Field Insurance Agent, can help you find a qualified attorney to help you set up and administer the trust and show you ways to fund the trust for the benefit of your disabled family member.

Brothers, Amazingly, we are reaching the end of the 2016-2017 Columbian Year. It has been a truly remarkable year and an eye opening experience for the team and me, where we have seen an increase in service program involvement throughout the State. We found ourselves amazed at the creativity of Council’s and Individuals who crafted new programs in response to the ever changing environment we live in. My sincerest thanks goes to Hal Delaney, Deputy Program Director; Joe Miller, Youth Activities Director; Peter Briody, Columbian Squires and Squire Rose Director; Rich Connor, Community Activities Director; Peter Kueken, Church Activates Director; John Castagna, Council/Fraternal Activities Director; Steve Richardson, Culture of Life Director; and Joe Wickham Special Programs Director, for their leadership by example. Thank you also to Michael Vaclavicek for his hard work as Membership Director. I would also like to thank our State Council Web Master, Bernie Ernst for keeping our online presence up to date and accurate. In addition, I would like to thank John Gazis for his hard work and effort supporting Bernie with the website as well as for being the Editor of the Crusader, our State Newsletter. Most of all, I thank our program chairmen for their involvement and enthusiasm. Their contribution makes the difference. I have learned a great deal from the feedback on our programs we have received from our State Officers, District Deputies, Grand Knights, and Brother Knights. Your knowledge and support is always appreciated and makes a difference in how we respond to our organization’s needs. The contributions and efforts of all these individuals were evident at the NJ State Knights of Columbus Convention during the Programs Award section of the agenda. Over 192 awards were given out in the 7 program areas, where many worthy Councils were eligible for recognition. But of course, only one can win. I can say without hesitation that the New Jersey State Council is very fortunate to have such councils of distinction and caliber involved in our many service program activities. We can be very proud of the fact that they go the extra mile. As in the passage from Mathew 25:40 -- “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Our Councils here in NJ truly act as Disciples of Christ through their actions. They make a difference in our communities and they define just what the Knights of Columbus are all about: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. As always, here are a few reminders: Programs:

x 6/9 - Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies; x 6/24 – Grand Knights Meeting, 7:45 am Mass, 8:15 am Registration. Invite forthcoming; x 6/25 - State Tank Pull Competition, Clifton. Register on line www.tankpullkofc.org

REPORTS DUE:

x 06/30 – Columbian Award Application Due (Form SP-7) x 07/01 – Report of Chosen Officers Due (Form 185)

I look forward to the upcoming Columbian year 2017-18. Let us, together, do our best to develop a calendar of programs with the tools supplied by our State Council and Supreme Council. Remember to have fun and work together to Protect God’s Kingdom. Keep the Faith, Jim Sweeney, FDD NJ State Program Director

Good Day Good People, And so another Columbian year is coming to an end. For those of you who were not in attendance at the convention, we missed you. On Friday we recognized 52 councils or assemblies and three individuals for their outstanding contributions in the Special Program area. The Drive for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities collected a total of $655,642 and this was done by 16 fewer councils then participated last year. If you haven’t held this year’s drive yet, then schedule it now. John Gazis, Chairman of the NJ K of C Polar Penguins program, presented plaques to Gary Seals, David Coppolla and Ray Lill for leading the team to a 2nd place finish this year. The team set a new team record of $63,471. Gary raised $14,460, Dave raised $10,360 and Ray raised $5,986. Well done guys and congratulations to theentire Polar Penguins Team. Next year, why not join them for this special day. Deborah Hospital Support Program has raised $17,085 towards it’s $30,000 goal. While the Alzheimer’s Disease Respite Care Support Program has raised $24,489 to support New Jersey based Alzheimer’s organizations. One of our newest programs, Autism Awareness and Parental Support is off to a great start; three councils raised almost $5,000 in the first year. Please consider helping during this coming year. Thank you Bernie Ernst, FDD, for getting the ball rolling. Greg Ryan and Phil Fredericks were at the convention with laptops at their booth registering people for the Organ Donor Program. It's not too late to help save a life; go on-line at www.registerme.org/knights and register yourself. We ask that your council consider helping in Building the Domestic Church. Kiosks with 200 booklets on various topic for the family and prayer life are available from Supreme for $150. Talk to your pastor about placing one in the back of your church. It has been a pleasure serving under our Worthy State Deputy, Bruce DeMolli, and I look forward to working with State Deputy elect Bob Hatler and his team. Please continue to pray for persecuted Christians! Have a Blessed and safe summer with your family. Peace and Goodness, Vivat Jesus, Joseph Wickham, OFS, PGK, FDD Special Programs Director

Brothers: Even though the 2017 State Convention is over, you still have one month left in the Columbian Year to reach your Culture of Life goals, if you haven’t already. If you have reached your goal, try exceeding it. Even though we stress May, as Mother’s Day Month, as being a great time for running pro-life programs, how about doing something to honor all those great Dads in June? Hold a rose sale, baby bottle drive, or make a donation through the Save a Life or Share in Life programs. Another thought would be making a donation to an adoption center in the name of an adoptive father in your council! Convention Program Awards. There was a great surge forward this year in our Diapers for Babies program. From the council reports, over 64,000 diapers, 1,200 bottles of formula, more than 700 boxes of wipes, and $5,800 were sent to various crisis pregnancy centers, social service agencies and food pantries! We continue to make a difference with this program! The Huggie Award winners at the convention were:

Leading Role Nativity Council 2976 Supporting Role Don Bosco Council 7784 Featured Role Immaculate Conception Council 3512

Congratulations also to those winning awards for Share in Life participation: Moorestown Council ($24,000) and Incarnation Council ($4,404), as well as Homes for Mothers: Nativity Council ($10,657), Father Joseph A. Cassidy Council ($3,652), and Msgr. Joseph F. Loretti Council ($3,288). Special congratulations should also go out to those who were recognized for their individual achievement, including our Catholic Citizens of the Year, Angelo and Rose Anna Romanello, the Gene Baker Culture of Life Award winner, Joseph R. Wickham, and for his years of dedicated service to the Ultrasound Initiative, Mickey Schiavone. Spiritual Adoption Program. This month is the right time to start working on a Spiritual Adoption program. Talk to your pastor now about scheduling a Pledge Drive in your parish for September to gather the names and e-mail addresses, so that you can start the 9 months of prayer in Pro-Life Month, October. Then schedule a virtual baby shower at the end of the 9 months. If your parish already holds a baby shower, then plan your program to start 9 months in advance of it. Your pastor will appreciate the support! Materials and information on running this program are available at prolife.njkofc.org. Grand Knights Meeting. Be sure your council sends its Grand Knight to the meeting on June 24. Lots of great information will be discussed there on pro-life activities. Remember, just because we are starting a new Columbian Year does not mean that the battle for the Culture of Life has ended; it continues on! You should be planning out your strategies for the new year and getting ready to implement them!

Vivat Jesus! Steven J. Richardson, FM Culture of Life Programs Director

All Done Except For The Paperwork! “Back in my day…”, even though it was a mere 14 years ago that I was elected as Grand Knight of

Council 8415 in Seaside Park, EVERYTHING was done by hand. We received, and processed reams and reams of paper each year just keeping up with programs, reports, and filings. As had been mentioned before, I left the Grand Knights’ Meeting with an armful of handouts, manuals and booklets – in total an over 10” high stack of reading material.

The Grand Knight handbook was over 350 pages thick and was in a 3-ring binder. Being heavy on the German side of my Family Tree, I did not go to sleep that night until I had read everything I received, cover-to-cover, and committed to memory.

I had a great Financial Secretary at the time, the late Steve Stacey. He kept the Grand Knights of our Council on top of every deadline and, as a result, we had long stream of Star Council plaques on the wall. If we earned it, we reported it, on time, every time!

Then, in 2005, the State Council upgraded the website and reporting became easier – at least to those Councils that availed themselves of its features and benefits. Reporting did improve, but was never 100%, and the Grand Knights Handbook, and the District Deputy’s Handbook was still produced on paper – and lots of it!

In 2011, under State Deputy Dr. Daniel Rossi, now Supreme Director, the Grand Knights’ and District Deputy’s Handbooks were produced on CDs. Monthly mailings were eliminated in favor of broadcast e-mails. Combined, this “leap” into the 21st century saves – by my calculation – over 594,000 sheets of 8.5” x 11” paper per year. That equates to over 544,500 feet – or 103 linear miles of paper.

This June, with the proliferation of Smart Phones, Tablets, and laptops that are too thin to enable an internal DVD drive, the State Officers approved converting the Handbooks to Flash Drives. The Grand Knights’ Flash Drive (in Reflex Blue) will contain the 2017-2018 Grand Knights’ Handbook, plus useful resources and a primer on accessing and utilizing the State website (www.njkofc.org ).

The District Deputies will receive a Flash Drive (in KofC red) containing all of the above, plus the District Deputy Handbook and other important links.

The Flash Drives will contain a chart of deadlines and links, and can be attached to a key chain so it will always be available.

Once it is posted on-line, the State Directory can be added to the user’s Flash Drive as well through a secure download.

This year, 100% of the forms can be accessed on-line; over 60% of the forms can be completed and filed electronically; the balance of the forms need to be printed and submitted with payment or other supporting documents.

BUT…it still comes back to the old adage, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink!” We are bringing the proverbial “water” right to you; we are even placing it in your pocket. It will be up to next year’s officers to follow the contents on the Flash Drive and meet the deadlines.

I use to tell my employees that, “I never ask you to do something that I have not done myself”. The best way to reward, and recognize the hard work of your Council and your members, is to keep up with the deadlines and file your reports in a timely manner.

Finally, you can always reach out to the state webmaster. It is rumored that he answers his phone 24/7 – 732/ 504-7496, or by e-mail [email protected]

If your term is ending, please help the brother behind you and help him get the proper forms (form 186 and state directory form) to the proper location and chairmen, so there is not a lapse in information. Those of you with your time at the helm ending, THANK YOU for your efforts! For the newly elected, Congratulations and thank you for taking the next step and being the leader to navigate your Assembly. I hope that each of you have a safe and enjoyable summer and find the time to enjoy your family and friends. In closing I wish each of you a wonderful Father’s Day, and look forward to the new upcoming Columbian year! Vival Jesus, Christopher Tomasello, Sr Master 2nd NJ District
