Are You Getting Enough Protein? ALTRUM Can Help.Protein isn’t just for bodybuilders and athletes. Your body relies on protein to function on even the most basic level. It’s necessary to promote the growth and maintenance of tissues, bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Much of the protein found in bars, drinks and powders is derived from milk as whey protein. Whey protein is fast-digesting and particularly effective at increasing the production of new protein in your muscles. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids needed for healthy muscle development.

What Is Whey Protein? Whey protein is derived from the liquid that separates from milk during cheese production. There are three types of whey protein powder; isolate, concentrate and hydrolyzed (partially digested). The form of processing they undergo determines the final protein levels that can be found in each.

• Whey protein concentrate is the most common type and is widely popular among bodybuilders, athletes and others who want additional protein in their diet.

• Whey protein isolate has been filtered further than whey concentrate and has more of the fats and lactose (carbs) removed. It has a higher protein percentage and is absorbed more quickly than whey concentrate. Because it is low in lactose, it may be beneficial for people who have trouble with dairy products.

• Whey protein hydrolysate is considered “fast” protein because it is more easily digested than the other forms of whey protein. Research has shown this form of protein results in more rapid uptake of amino acids in the body, according to the National Institutes of Health.

What Are the Effects of Not Having Enough Protein? The body does not store protein and needs a daily intake to prevent deficiency. Insufficient protein levels can cause fatty liver, loss of muscle mass, fatigue, greater appetite & calorie intake, increased severity of infections and other undesirable side effects. Edema, which causes swollen and puffy skin, is a classic symptom of protein deficiency. It’s caused by fluid accumulation in tissues and can lead to fluid buildup inside the abdominal cavity.

What Are the Benefits of a Healthy Protein Intake? Establishing a healthy protein regiment will allow your body build muscle, regulate immune functions and help it recover from strenuous activity. A double-blind study done by the National Institutes of Health found adding a whey protein supplement helps enhance vital signs & physical performance among athletes. These benefits can be found in sedentary folks as well and helps improve overall strength and muscle mass. The amount of protein intake you need relies on your age, current muscle mass, overall health and activity level. The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight, or 0.36 grams per pound. This amounts to 56 grams per day for the average male, and 46 grams per day for the average female.

Supplementing Your Protein Intake Since whey protein is not very palatable on its own, powder supplements are most commonly enhanced with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry flavoring. They can be mixed into water or milk or sprinkled into shakes & recipes as a great way to replenish your body’s protein supply.
