Dear Members and Friends, I sure was hoping we would be back to-gether for worship by now, but instead we continue to demonstrate an abundance of caution before carefully gathering again. At this point, we are doing the work of the church by Zoom meetings, email, phone calls and by offering worship online. The Session appointed a “Covid-19 Task Force” to establish guidelines for building use (included in this newsletter). The Task Force will continue to evaluate safe procedures for gathering for worship. The Deacons are trying to check in with each member, however, if you haven’t heard from your Deacon in a while, if you need any kind of assistance, prayer, or if you just need to chat, please call your as-signed Deacon or the Church Office. Kristi is in the office Monday – Thursday. Now is the perfect time for spiritual growth! Both Adult Sunday Clas-ses are doing studies via email and you are invited to jump right in. For more info please contact Laura Jansen (Seekers Class) or Van Davis (Isaac Class). Thank you, Joel and Diane, for all the hours of practice and record-ing, and for finding new ways to provide music for our on-line wor-ship without a choir. Thank you, Drew Schrader, for the hours and hours of video recording and work that makes our worship look “easy”. (Thank you, Van Davis, for the work you’ve done, too!) Please know how deeply grateful I am for you. I praise God for all the little and big ways you love our Lord and one another in this un-settled time. Even though we continue to be apart, now and always we take comfort in the sure promise that nothing is “able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Blessings & love, Pastor Holly

We all love our fur babies! Thank you for sending in your
favorite pet pictures for this month’s newsletter. Dogs and cats
were the best represented, however, we also received pictures
of horses, a goat, zeedonk, and even, a turkey! Hope you
enjoy meeting our furry friends, and, based on what you can
deduce about their personalities, guess who their people are!

the location, setup and serve food, dismantle, and clean, and return leftover food to the Open Door (4hrs)

LIVE FORWARD, GIVE FORWARD
A will is one of the simplest things you can do to make a positive impact on the future. Including a gift to your church in your will can make a lasting difference in our church family and community. If you would like to participate in the growth of our Endowment Program through your will, please contact Nancy Thompson, Church Treasurer or Hughes Roberts, Endowment Team Member, for assistance in wording for your will and for our understanding of your intent for your gift.

We will be collecting your Pentecost offering through the end of June. Our Church re-
tains 40% of this offering, which goes to children and youth at risk. Your Mission Team
has decided to retain this money in a separate fund to use for our Salvation Army
Christmas Angels/children in November.
We received a letter from Maxine Perry with news about her February trip to the Hon-
duras Eye Clinic. Maxine shared that a visiting ophthalmologist, Dr. Ron Braswell,
along with a 3rd year ophthalmology resident from the University of Arkansas, were
able to perform many surgeries during their time there. Dr. Rob Fish, a retired dentist
from Connecticut, also joined the mission team of eleven. A couple of personal sto-
ries…Reina, a 60-year-old, returned for her post-op cataract surgery checkup. Reina
hopes to be able to care for her grandchildren so that their widowed mothers will be
able to find work. Honduras has an unemployment rate of 33%...Angel, a seventy-
year-old man, first visited the clinic in 2014 as a result of a traumatic eye injury that
left him with little eyesight in that eye. He had successful cataract surgery in his good
eye, and is now followed for glaucoma.
We also received a letter from Gordon and Dorothy Gartrell, who were on an interpre-
tive assignment in the United States from January through March. Unfortunately,
their stay was cut short, as a result of unexpected medical issues. Both are doing
better and have returned to Brazil. They ask for your prayers to support their ministry.
I hope all of you are well and that we will all be back in church together very soon.

As we continue to comply with the State’s Stay at Home Order, your communications team continues to look for ways to keep everyone connected. The Newsletter is certainly a key way we try to keep everyone updated. Thanks to Kathi Armstrong for keeping the News-letter informative and interesting. We continue to work with Pastor Holly, Joel and Diane to bring the Sunday service to you online each week. From the response it appears many of you are viewing the service and enjoying the music. Facebook continues to be utilized in sharing all things interesting and the What Are You Doing Group is very active in sharing some new ideas to help keep us all active and engaged. And the website continues to be a source of information for people contemplating a return to the mountains. While we all look forward to again greeting people face-to-face, in the meantime, stay connected via your computer/smart phone/tablet and most important, stay safe.

April 2020 Session Notes
Ron Tingle, Clerk of Session
Session’s scheduled monthly meeting occurred on May 11th at 1 p.m., as an online video conference via Zoom. Elders present were: Pat Briggs, Ruth Caldwell, Rick Croskery, Gregg Miller, Hughes Roberts, Drew Schrader and Ron Tingle; Pastor Holly Davis moderating. Assistant Treasurer Melonie Gross was also present.
The meeting was convened by Pastor Holly, with an opening prayer and a devotional from Psalm 118. Elders were updated on congregational health concerns and praises. Pastor Holly ledprayers for the congregation and the world around us. A quorum was declared, the agenda wasapproved, and minutes from Session’s April 20th meeting were approved.
Melonie Gross presented the financial report for the period ending April 30th. Our monthly income was lower than expenses, as expected with no Sunday worship. Net income for April was $10,170, with expenses of $18,048. However, year-to-date, we are still well positioned with a positive balance. At 33% through the year, our income is actually 38% of the annual budget, with expenses below target at only 30%. Session accepted Melonie’s full April financial report as presented. The elders again expressed their sincere thanks to Melonie for handling all financial duties so expertly during Nancy Thompson’s extended travels.
Men of the Church will be donating their entire Breakfast Fund balance to local charities. $500 will go to Haywood Christian Ministry, and $500 to the Pathways Center, both for family assistance with COVID-19 related needs. Elders were genuinely appreciative of this surprise donation to the community.
Session had a lengthy discussion regarding the timing and extent of “opening up”. Basing decisions on the pastoral letter from our Presbytery, from the State of North Carolina’s phasing directives, and based on our local congregation’s needs, the elders chartered a task force to meet ASAP. Their charge was to develop policy, specific guidelines, and details quickly and thoughtfully for meetings and worship soon. Task force members are:
Ruth Caldwell, Congregational pulse and input Rick Croskery, MD, also for facility use issues Holly Davis, Pastor Gregg Miller, Worship issues Drew Schrader, Staffing and personnel issues.
(Guidelines developed by the Team and approved by Session appear in this newsletter.)
Our Mission Team asked that we extend our Pentecost Offering period through the end of June. Session concurred. As there was no further business, Pastor Holly closed the meeting with a prayer.

From Your Editor
In these past few months of quarantine, I am reminded of the
importance that routines and rituals play in our daily lives, especially
during times of stress and transition. Consistency in our lives is
critical, and angst will arise when the patterns of the day are not in
place. Our body's clock or natural circadian rhythm tells us when to
sleep, wake, and eat, and regulates neurochemicals and hormone
functions. When these basic functions are not under control, both
our health and emotional functioning are compromised.
For us, watching the morning news with our coffee is a new routine-
and, we try to stay away from the news for the rest of the day. On
Sundays, we enjoy worshipping with Holly, from the comfort of
home. While we cannot go to the gym, we can walk Teagan, garden,
and relish in the NC spring weather. I have discovered bread baking
again, after a hiatus of many years. We both enjoy trying new
recipes, and interestingly, have lost a few pounds eating home
cooking. We learned to use Zoom, so now visit our family and
friends virtually, including our new granddaughter, Juniper. And card
games are giving us newfound pleasure.
Given our new reality, what have you found that helps your day run
more smoothly and consistently? I would love to hear from you and
share your thoughts with our friends at FPCW. Email me at

Pat Brigg's Thai Peanut Vegetable Dip 10 oz sweet chili sauce (make sure it is sweet) 12 oz dry roasted peanuts 2 Tbs sesame oil 1/4 cup warm water Raw veggies Put chili sauce in food processor. While the food processor is go-ing, add the peanuts. When it looks like peanut butter, add the sesame oil and water, and process it until desired consistency. Serve it with raw vegetables. It is especially good with carrots, cucumbers, and celery. Also good with pita chips.
