3. Business Arising from Minutes I. Safe Communities Day
(1) Safe Communities is happening on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Our goal is to receive 600 students from Upper Grand District School Board and Wellington Catholic District School Board.
(2) We are submitting a grant through the MTO to fund Safe Communities Day (3) We are inviting all of the participants from last year, we may invite more. (4) Jim Petirk to look into securing the interactive unit from Fire Services to use on
Safe Communities Day (5) More updates to come at the September 20 meeting.
II. Crossover legislation update
I. Christine, Gregg, and Heather have completed delegating each municipal council regarding the new legislation and what Safe Communities WC is proposing to increase the safety of Wellington County’s Vulnerable Road users.
II. We delegated the Town of Minto, Township of Wellington North, Town of Erin, Guelph/Eramosa Township, Township of Centre Wellington, and the Township of Mapleton.
III. Currently waiting on the decisions each municipality will be making, along with clarification from Wellington County.
IV. Will there be public Education? Yes, once all the line paintings occur, we will be working with the MVC PAG in educating throughout Wellington County
III. Safe Kids Week – June 5, 2017 to June 11, 2017 I. Everything went amazing, thanks to the great staff working at all of the Wellington
County library Branches. There were a lot of creative ideas in promoting Safe Kids Week by the branches.
II. Kids had the opportunity to win bells and lights at each branch for submitting their Safe Kids Week Quiz teaching them about bicycle safety.
III. 128 kids attended programming, including 6 teenagers and parents totalling 202. 150 Quizzes were returned, but more were distributed. (1) Suggestions to partner with Firefighters, EMS and Police to attend programming.
It was a huge draw at branches that made this available. (2) Find out as much information from Parachute at an earlier date to ensure the
information is relayed in a timely fashion (3) The Quizzes were great, but we need to be clear on the dates that the quizzes
will be accepted at the libraries. Some Quizzes were brought in too early and receptacles were not in place.
IV. Social Media Tutorial – Postponed
4. Reports
Falls PAG
I. July 6, 2017 meeting coming up II. No update at this time, but will have a lot to talk about at the September 20th
meeting.
Motor Vehicle PAG
I. Purchasing bells for Safe Communities Day
II. “What Distracted Driving Means to Me” Video Contest. Was it successful? Yes. 21 videos were submitted across Wellington County.
III. The contest should be an annual contest that Safe Communities Wellington County Coordinates – The reach was well beyond the 21 submissions. On average, there were partners and most of the videos had even more student involvement. Awareness is the #1 reason why we are doing this.
IV. We have the opportunity to promote the videos at events and on social media. V. Centre Wellington District High School had the most submissions, because Jose
Martinez made it a school project. The quality of the video’s were great! Both overall winners were from CWDHS. Next year, we need to talk with the other high schools to see if we can get the video in the curriculum.
VI. Do we open up 2017/2018 to everyone in the County? Between the ages of …? VII. The south end is not represented, because those kids go to Bishop MacDonnell and
other High School’s in Guelph. VIII. Do we include elementary schools? Maybe have the elementary schools vote on
videos from their area? Maybe a poster contest? Numbers maybe too high to have kids watch at an assembly…it may just work for online voting at the high school level. Pick the top 5 and then send it down to the elementary schools
IX. Grade 8’s were part of Gabby’s Youth Group – they were interested in creating a video.
X. Very important to engage the elementary and middle schools within Wellington County.
Intentional Self Harm PAG
I. Suicide Awareness Month – September 21 – Melville United Church – 7:00 to 9:00 – Help, Hope and Cope -‐ Stephen Lewis key note address and panel discussion. We want representation on the panel from all walks of life; Education, Faith, Enforcement, Parent, Journey, etc.
II. For Safe Communities Day the ISH PAG will have a toolbox, a “Coping Kit”, including emojii magnet, painted rock, etc.
Program Coordinator
I. As mentioned earlier, doing a quick follow up from Safe Kids Week. Will be having a meeting with Brooke from Wellington County Libraries to debrief.
II. Beginning to coordinate Safe Communities Day with the participants. Letters to the schools will go out the first week of September when teachers are back at school
III. At the Wellington County Council meeting next week, Gregg Davidson, Stephen Dewar, Heather Lawson and Warden, Dennis Lever will be awarding the winners their certificate of accomplishment.
IV. Also working on Safe Communities Wellington County Re-‐Designation – The Priority Setting Exercise will take place on Thursday, November 23 at the Wellington County Museum & Archives

VI. Christine will be on vacation from July 1 to July 15.
5. Community Groups –
I. Wellington North (Bob McArthur) • Wrapping up youth dances for the season; will resume in the Fall. – it is a safe,
secure environment for youth to engage with one another – June 22 is the homecoming dance.
• Held a car seat clinic that was fairly well attended. • Will be running a CPR Refresher Course in the Fall • Still having difficulties with maintaining volunteers. Fortunately we have a core
group. • Wellington North Safe Communities is requesting a donation of $500.00 to purchase
an AED for the Mount Forest Legion – The Safe Communities Wellington County Executive questioned whether the purchase of an AED fell into our priority areas?
• Do we want to grant money that does not fit the priorities? What is our mandate? • Our vision is to make Wellington County the Safest place to live, work in play. AED’s
will keep our community safe. • If we go on that premise, is there anything that would not be included? • Snow Angel’s was given money…Not exactly falling into the priorities, but we still
granted the money. • Bigger Picture – We want to prevent an injury ( fall), so, in the end, Snow Angel’s
does meet the criteria. • Bob mentioned at the beginning, Safe Communities and COPs groups could request
funding regardless; has it changed? • Question to Bob regarding the validity of Intentional Self Harm as priority area the
AED is under? Potentially finding someone who has tried to take their life, the AED could revive them.
• Mary Lloyd made a Motion to postpone decision until September 20, 2017 meeting.
6. Adjournment The group was adjourned at 11:30 AM. The Next Leadership Table meeting is scheduled for September 20, 2017 at 8 a.m. (Priority Advisory Groups) and 9:30 a.m. (Leadership Table) at the Wellington County Museum & Archives.
