It is my pleasure and privilege to invite you to participate in the 20th IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics to be held from June 23-27, 2013 in Seoul, Korea.

The World Congress of IAGG has been held every four years in different countries all over the world. As one of the most highly acclaimed meetings in the field of ageing, the IAGG2013 congress is expected to gather a large number of participants from more than 90 countries.

At the 20th Seoul World Congress, under the theme of “Digital Ageing: New Horizon for Health Care and Active Ageing”, a wide range of scientific programs are being organized balancing four major fields of gerontology and geriatrics: Biology, Clinical Medicine, Social/Behavioral Sciences, Research/Policy/Practice. The organizing com-mittee will make interesting and worthwhile programs focused on the latest develop-ments and trends, as well as the future outlook of ageing society.

I truly believe that the IAGG2013 congress will be highly rewarding international fes-tivals for everyone and will bring enhancement of the academic level and industrial development, which will contribute to improve the quality of life in ageing society. The quality of human life in the 21st century society is much influenced by knowledge-based information and information-delivering communica-tion technology. Such enhancement in information and communication technology improves the quality of life for the elderly by providing convenience every day, but at the same time, insufficient knowledge of the very same technology needs to be ad-dressed. BUSSE AWARD CEREMONY AND AWARDEES’ LECTURES This award is supported from an endowment made by Gerontology International in honor of Ewald W. Busse, M.D., past presi-

dent of the IAGG (former IAG: International Association of Gerontology) and founding director of the Duke Aging Center. This endowment is administered by the Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. In recognition of significant contributions to ageing research one award will recognize a scientist from the social/behavioral sciences; the other, a scientist from the biomedical sciences.

IPSEN AWARD CEREMONY AND AWARDEES’ LECTURESIPSEN, a French scientific foundation has developed mainly three types of activities: international meetings tracking progress in biomedical research, publications (proceedings, newsletter and brochures), prizes awarded in recognition of outstanding works in various domains. One of them is the Longevity Prize, awarded annually to biologists, geneticists, gerontologists, psychologists, demographers, statisticians, etc. Recipients are selected by an international jury chaired by George Martin and currently composed of Judith Campisi, James Carey, Eileen Crimmins, Caleb Finch, Bernard Forette, Bernard Jeune, Jean-Pierre Michel, Jean-Marie Robine, Jacques Treton, and Bruno Vellas. ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON THE POPULATION AGEING AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

SPONSORED BY THE KOREAN GOVERNMENTThe impacts of the population ageing are depicted negatively in general, particularly with regard to the economic aspect and thus becoming an issue that people are afraid of and wish to avoid. The negative impacts may be based on some unreasonable, uncertain or unscientific assumptions about human capacities and social systems of future society. Will the population ageing retard economic growth and impose a heavy burden on future generations? What other perceived negative impacts might there be? This roundtable discussion will invite some prominent scholars and policy-makers who have different points of view on the impacts of the population ageing , and provide an opportunity to analyze more closely, and debate on, their positive and negative impacts.

Under the main theme of the congress, “Digital Ageing: A New Horizon for Health Care and Active Ageing” the IAGG2013 program planning committee will organize various scientific programs balancing a number of topics related on ageing. We invite proposals for submitted symposia. The submitted symposia will be a cornerstone of the scientific program and will have a high profile at the congress.

4. It is assumed that the first author will be the presenter.

5. By submitting a proposal at the IAGG 2013 Congress website, authors are assumed to give consent and authorize

the organizers to publish abstracts and papers, and to include them in any congress publications.

6. All communication with the congress secretariat will be done exclusively by the main organizer ([email protected]).

7. All speakers are required to register and pay the registration fee before the end of February 2013 in order to confirm their presentations. Failure to do this could result in losing the presentation slot.

Submission GuidelinesThe submission of an abstract implies your consent to have it published in the Abstract Book and that the author will participate in the 20th IAGG world congress. All presenting authors of accepted abstracts are expected to attend the congress and register no later than February 28, 2013.

1. Abstracts should be submitted by online. (www.iagg2013.org)

2. Abstracts should be submitted in English.

3. The maximum number of words is 250.

4. Authors may further edit and modify submitted abstracts until the submission deadline. It is the responsibility of the authors to ensure that their text does not contain typos or grammatical errors.

If the presenting author of an accepted abstract does not register by February 28, 2013, the abstract will be automatically withdrawn from the final program. Call for Nomination - Busse Awards

To promote international research in gerontology, two Busse Research Awards will be given at the 20th IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Seoul, Ko-rea, June 23-27, 2013. Two gerontologists (junior or mid-career) will be selected. One award will recognize a scientist from the social/behavioral sciences; the other from the biomedical sciences. Awards are US$6,000 each, with up to US$3,000 travel/liv-ing expenses. Awardees must present a lecture based on their research at the confer-ence. Deadline for receipt of applications: October 1, 2012.

The IAGG2013 Seoul Congress does not provide any transportation from the air-port to the congress venue and hotels. All participants must make their own transportation arrangements. The City Airport Terminal adjacent to the Coex complex operates the non-stop limou-sine bus between Coex and Incheon Int’l Airport / Gimpo Airport, check-in ser-vices for Airlines and departure immigra-tion service as well.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Korean Peninsula extends about 1,000 km from the Asian continent into the Pacific Ocean with more than 3,000 islands dotting the coastline. Mountains cover almost 70 percent of the land mass, making the country one of the most mountainous regions in the world and offering abundant forest resources. Administratively, Korea consists of nine provinces with 77 small cities and 88 counties.

WEATHERThe climate of Korea is characterized by four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. The congress period June average temperature is 21 degrees Celsius (71 Fahrenheit).

ELECTRICITYThe standard electricity supply is 220 volts AC/60 cycles. Most hotels may provide outlet converters for 110 and 220 volts. Partici-pants are advised to check with the hotel beforehand.

TIME ZONEKorea is 9 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +9) and does not have daylight savings time.

CURRENCY AND FOREIGN EXCHANGEThe unit of Korean currency is the Won(￦). Coin denominations are ￦10, ￦50, ￦100 and ￦500. Banknotes are ￦1,000, ￦5,000, ￦10,000 and ￦50,000. Foreign banknotes and traveler’s check can be exchanged at foreign exchange banks and other authorized moneychangers.

TIP & TAX Service charges are included in your bill for rooms, meals, and other services at hotels and upscale restaurants. Koreans occasion-ally do tip when they are especially pleased with the service they receive. Foreign tourists can receive nearly 10 % VAT refunds for purchases at Duty Free shops. Goods must be taken out of Korea within three months of purchase to be eligible for a tax refund. Visitors can receive a refund on a receipt for a minimum purchase of KRW 50,000 (around USD 43). To receive this refund, present receipts with the purchased goods at the customs clearance desk at Incheon International Airport when departing.
