FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA
An 11-Year Old Saint for Purity Maria Goretti lived in Italy about 100 years ago, along with her parents and 6 siblings. They were devout Catholics who made their living by hard work in the fields. But when Maria’s father became ill and could no longer do much work, the Gorettis had to take into their house a stranger named Giovanni and his son Allesandro, to help with the field work. Maria’s mother, Assunta, taught her daughter the importance of prayer, of trusting in God and avoiding sin; and Maria listened well to her mother. When Maria was 9, her father died and her mother had to go to work in the fields in his place. So young Maria often had to stay at home to do the housework and to take care of the smaller children.
One day Maria was at home taking care of her baby sister when suddenly Alessandro came in from the fields. He was then 19 years old and he had developed a bad habit of looking at magazines which portrayed women as objects. That day he demanded that Maria give in to his sexual desires or he would kill her. She refused, telling him it would be a terrible sin. In his rage, Allesandro stabbed her 14 times with a knife. Maria was taken to a hospital where she spent the last 20 hours of her life in terrible pain. Yet as she was dying she did not express any anger toward Allesandro. When a priest came to give her Holy Communion for the last time, she told him, “For the love of Jesus, I forgive Alessandro and I want him to be in heaven with me.” She died on July 6th, which we now celebrate as her feastday. But that is not the end of the story: Alessandro was sentenced for his crime to 30 years in prison. For the first 6 years he was angry and unrepentant, he even constantly blamed Maria Goretti for his troubles. But one night he had the most amazing dream. He saw Maria happily picking
flowers. She handed him 14 lillies, one for each time he had stabbed her. Then she said, “Alessandro, as I have promised, your soul shall someday reach me in heaven.” Alessandro had a complete conversion. He asked to make his confession to a priest and he became a model prisoner. After 27 years in prison, he was released, and soon afterwards he went to the house of Maria’s mother to ask forgiveness. We might expect that when Allesandro came to her door that day, Mrs. Goretti cursed him and slammed the door in his face. But that is not at all what happened. Instead, when Allesandro asked for her forgiveness, Asunta Goretti gently replied, “Maria forgave you, Christ forgave you, why should I not also forgive you? . . . Your evil days are past, and to me, you are a long-suffering son.” The next day, Christmas Day, she took Alessandro by the hand to Holy Mass and together they received Holy Communion! 40 years later, both of them, along with over 250,000 other people, gathered for the declaration that Maria Goretti is now a Saint in heaven, a saint for purity. In these days when so many people are tempted to disobey God’s commandments regarding marriage and human dignity, may St. Maria Goretti continue to inspire us to courageously resist sin and to be faithful to Jesus!

en Dios y motivarlos para vivirla en lo personal, familiar y en la comunidad. Experimentaran y conoceran mas a fondo el amor que les tiene Dios Padre, Dios hijo y nuestra Santisima Madre. Un Santo de 11 Años Para la Pureza.
María Goretti vivió en Italia hace unos 100 años, junto con sus padres y 6 hermanos. Eran católicos devotos que se ganaban la vida trabajando duro en los campos. Pero cuando el padre de María se enfermó y ya no podía hacer mucho trabajo, los Goretti tuvieron que llevar a su casa a un extraño llamado Giovanni y su hijo Allesandro, para ayudar en el trabajo de campo. La madre de María, Assunta, le enseñó a su hija la importancia de la oración, de confiar en Dios y evitar el pecado; y María escuchó bien a su madre. Cuando María tenía 9 años, su padre murió y su madre tuvo que ir a trabajar a los campos en su lugar. Entonces, la joven María a menudo tenía que quedarse en casa para hacer las tareas domésticas y cuidar a los niños más pequeños.
Un día, María estaba en casa cuidando a su hermanita cuando, de repente, Allesandro llegó del campo. Tenía entonces 19 años y había desarrollado el mal hábito de mirar las revistas que mostraban a las mujeres como objetos. Ese día exigió que María cediera a sus deseos sexuales o él la mataría. Ella se negó, diciéndole que sería un pecado terrible. En su furia, Allesandro la apuñaló 14 veces con un cuchillo. María fue llevada a un hospital donde pasó las últimas 20 horas de su vida con un dolor terrible. Sin embargo, mientras se estaba muriendo no expresó ninguna ira hacia Allesandro. Cuando un sacerdote vino a dar su Santa Comunión por última vez, ella le dijo: "Por el amor de Jesús, perdono a Alessandro y quiero que esté en el cielo conmigo". Ella murió el 6 de julio, que ahora celebramos como su fiesta.
Pero ese no es el final de la historia: Alessandro fue condenado por su delito a 30 años de prisión. Durante los primeros 6 años estuvo enojado e impenitente, incluso culpó constantemente a Maria Goretti por sus problemas. Pero una noche tuvo el sueño más increíble. Vio a María felizmente recogiendo flores. Ella le entregó 14 lirios, uno por cada vez que la había apuñalado. Entonces ella dijo: "Allesandro, como lo he prometido, tu alma algún día me alcanzará en el cielo".
Allesandro tuvo una conversión completa. Pidió hacer su confesión a un sacerdote y se convirtió en un prisionero modelo. Después de 27 años en prisión, fue liberado, y poco después fue a la casa de la madre de María para pedir perdón. Podríamos esperar que cuando Allesandro llegara a su puerta ese día, la Sra. Goretti lo maldijera y le cerrara la puerta en la cara. Pero eso no es en absoluto lo que sucedió. En cambio, cuando Allesandro le pidió perdón, Assunta Goretti respondió con suavidad: “María te perdonó, Cristo te perdonó, ¿por qué no debería yo también perdonarte?. . . Ya
pasaron tus días malos, y para mí, eres un hijo sufridor.” Al día siguiente, el día de Navidad, llevó a Allesandro de la mano a la Santa Misa y ¡juntos recibieron la Sagrada Comunión! 40 años después, ambos, junto con más de 250,000 personas, se reunieron para la declaración de que María Goretti ahora es una Santa en el cielo, una santa para la pureza. ¡En estos días, cuando tantas personas se ven tentadas a desobedecer los mandamientos de Dios con respecto al matrimonio y la dignidad humana, que Santa María Goretti continúe inspirándonos a resistir valientemente el pecado y ser fieles a Jesús!

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and
free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this
through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
