The Compassionate Friends is a mutual assistance, self-help organization offering friendship, understanding and hope to bereaved families. The primary purpose is to assist them in positive resolution of the grief experienced upon the death of a child and to support their efforts to achieve physical and emotional health. The secondary purpose is to provide information and to educate about bereaved families.

The objective is to help those in their community, including family, friends, employers, and co-workers to be supportive.

The Angel Statue Fund (reported by Arlene Priest)

After more than ten years, we are now on the “home stretch” for the unveiling and dedication of our beautiful Angel Staue in Rose Park!! However, we were not made aware of by the City of Billings Park & Recreation, certain requirements prior to the acutal installation of our “Angel” and therefore it has become necessary to postpone our Dedication Ceremony until some time in June. We are saddend for the delay and so sorry because we know how very much we were all looking forward to having our “Angel” in place by Mother’s Day. We hope to give you a firm date as soon as possible.

We are so very grateful to each and everyone of you who have so generously given memorials in loving memory of your child, grandchild, or sibling to our Angel Fund. And thanks, too, to all of the organizations who have compassionately given funds to assist us financually for this special project! We are thrilled to announce that we have reached our goal! The sanctuary in Rose Park has become such a meaningful and special place to our members that we want to insure that it is well maintained for years to come. In an effort to preserve and financially support any future additions to our beloved sanctuary we will now designate these donations to the “Rose Park Sanctuary Fund.”

Again, we thank you so very much for your continued support.

OUR RELUCTANT JOURNEY !

! When!we!plan!a!tip!we!take!provisions,!a!road!map!and!sometimes!we!ask!and!receive!advice!from!others!who!have!traveled!that!

way.!What!we!wouldn’t!do!is!listen!to!someone!who!had!never!been!on!that!road.!!

! Ours!is!a!reluctant!journey!of!grief.!We!didn’t!know!we!were!going,!have!no!idea!how!to!read!the!road!map,!don’t!know!what!to!

expect,!weren’t!asked!to!go,!and!often!we’d!prefer!to!just!lie!down!in!the!road!and!die,!although!we!don’t!like!to!admit!we!have!

thoughts!like!that.!I!admit!I!do.!

! Although!none!of!us!truly!finished!the!journey!on!this!earth,!I!am!determined!to!ask!for!help!of!those!who!are!perhaps!25!miles!up!

the!road.!“Help!me,!help!me,!back!here…!I!am!only!2!miles!into!this!trip.!Won’t!you!come!back!and!walk!with!me?!Please!come!back!and!

while!we!walk!you!can!tell!me!what!to!expect!up!the!road.”!The!worst!thing!is!when!others!say,!“oh!my,!aren’t!you!finished!with!that!

trip?...!or!are!you!still!crying…!my!goodness,!it’s!been!20!miles!now.!I’m!not!going!to!be!hurt!by!their!ignorance!anymore…!they!simply!

haven’t!traveled!this!way.!

! So!be!brave!my!compassionate!friends…!one!step!at!a!time…!one!day!at!a!time!and!pleasure!will!come!again!on!our!journey,!I!

know!it!will.!Hand!in!hand!we!will!walk!together,!drawing!strength!from!one!another,!but!please!don’t!forget!to!come!back!and!get!me…!

PONDERINGS ALONG THE PATH

Dear Compassionate Friends:

! This month many of our children are starting new chapters in their lives,

by graduating from high school or college, getting married or even becoming

parents themselves. As much as we rejoice in their achievements and their

optimism for the future, we mourn the loss of the old chapter. It’s so hard to

think about them moving on in life and realizing we will no longer be as big a

part in their daily lives. We love the confident, kind, funny adults they have become, but mourn the loss of the

trusting little child we rocked and nurtured and shared every little happy time or disappointment with. It is

especially hard for bereaved families who have suffered the loss of a child through death to “let go” of their

surviving children. We don’t do change very well!

Our children have taught us unconditional love, courage, the strength to stand up for our values and the

faith to keep going during adversity. They have also taught us patience, hope, confidence, the ability to dream

and the unbelievable strength of family. Our children have taught us that life goes on. They have lived

through the tremendous pain of losing a sibling and experienced one of the most painful losses possible, but

still find the courage to hope and love and dream for the future. They are anxious to spread their wings and

experience life. We can only hug them tight, say a prayer and release them to find their way in the world. We

are trusting them to make the right choices through the values we have taught them. We have so many dreams

for them, but realize they have to have their own dreams, and work to make those dreams come true. We hope

that our faith, love and trust in them will carry them through any tough times, and the knowledge that we will

always “be there” for them.

Our church has a wonderful ceremony for graduating seniors in which our ladies’ quilting group hand-

makes a beautiful quilt for each graduate and they are then presented with the quilts and blessed. It is a very

moving ceremony and it moves me to tears every year. The words go something like this: “when you were

born we wrapped you in a blanket and held you close. We now wrap you in this quilt and send all the love and

caring of your family and church family with you out into the world”.

I wish you comfort and healing, and the faith and courage to get through these new chapters in your life.
