PROPOSED FOR MEMBERSHIP
Well, school’s out and we look forward to a packed pool and a harbor full of sails! This month’s “quick hits”: I hope everyone enjoyed the Opening Day Flag Raising Ceremony and Boat Parade as much as I did. We had a nice turnout and good weather. Also, many thanks to the Past Commodores who were present, along with Reverend Rachel Benefield, who gave an inspired blessing to the boats. We will have a new member orientation on Wednesday, June 16. Although listed as being for “new” members, this orientation will be helpful for anyone who joined the club in the last year or so. We will have an overview of club activities and various committee chairs will be present to answer any questions. Plus, we will be through in time to enjoy the Wednesday night dinner! By now you have probably noticed that the bathroom/shower trailer has been moved underneath the east side of the club. The Board believes that the membership will greatly benefit from the trailer in this location, especially during the summer months. Thanks to our Property &
Maintenance chair, Greg Pietrangelo, for overseeing this move. As for the club’s financial operations, through April our actual operating income ($250,400) exceeded budgeted operating income ($237,287). However, we continue to watch the budget closely, as we know it will get much tighter later in the year. Finally, the Board continues to monitor the oil spill situation, as all of you do. At this time, the Board believes that the boom the Coast Guard has ready to place across the mouth of the harbor is adequate protection for the club. Of course, if circumstances change the Board will be prepared to take any additional measures. See you at the club, Marty Warren, Commodore

Cleaning Silver Special thanks to the Ladies and Staff for keeping all of our GYC trophies in tip top shape. It takes a lot of work to keep the vast number of trophies the GYC has acquired over the years always looking so good.
April Derby Day Luncheon Hats Galore! After a long, seemingly forever winter, Spring burst forth in fashion at the April Derby Hat day Luncheon. Members dressed in brightly col‐ored fashions and wearing their version of Derby Hats made a delightfully cheerful afternoon for all. Peggy Ryland performed magical transformations to hats with simple additions. With the placement of a flower, or two and some netting, plain and unexciting hats be‐
came what would be a fash‐ion statement at Churchill Downs. Some ladies had hats that had been gently stored for many years, as the one worn by Shirley Pate whose hat had seen 50 years and was like it had just been purchased. Wilder Switzer even wore a price saver hat beautifully created from newspaper decorated with fresh flowers from her gar‐den. Peggy even cre‐ated a derby hat from Louise Holcomb’s
GYC visor cap! Hostesses for April were Dean Hunter, Dot Carter, Mary Ann Nicholson, Sue Frentz, Betty Conn Lee and. The festive mood centered around beautifully decorated tables with vases filled with spring flowers. In recognition of the Kentucky Derby, a bottle of Wild Turkey Kentucky Bourbon was given as a special door prize. The new Auxiliary Directories are in and are available in the GYC office. If you have not signed up to be a hostess, please volunteer at the next meeting. There is a budget provided for decorations. Also, hostesses can select the menu for their month’s luncheon. Joyce Smith (228‐222‐3146) or [email protected] makes the reservations for the Wednesday Luncheon on the Monday before so please RSVP so that she can provide an accurate number for the lunch menu. GYA Opening Regatta GYC had a great time at Pontchartrain YC for the GYA Opening Regatta. The front brought on high winds and even bigger waves that led to a half hour postponement
Saturday and a 2 hour delay Sunday. Hugh Hawkins and Taylor Reiss from Florida sailed a stellar weekend in the big breeze winning three of the six races and won the 420 Class! Claire Yoste, John Harrison Doucet, Sam Vasquez, and John Watson Galloway sailed in the Capdevielle Class and finished 6th overall. Dawson & Louis Doucet and Chris Hoppe shined in the Optimist Class.
Tools The season is almost here for us and it is Spring Cleaning for you. So, dig out those old tools, ice chests, dock boxes, ropes, & boat parts and bring them on down or call me up to arrange pick up. Any old wrenches and pipe wrenches will makes things easier on Michael B. and me. Carpet and rigs will also be needed to cover floating docks. And once again, thank you, Gail for your donations. Score / Notice / Message Board Project It is time to develop a cost effective Official Notice / Score Board on the lower deck for regattas and events. I would appreciate any volunteers or ideas, as well as any donations of materials. Call me at 323‐1336. Sam Vasquez, Sailing Director
