West Essex Bowmen Junior Charity shoot 21st June

“On Saturday the 21st of June Mayflower Archers went to West Essex for a charity shoot that will help a 4-year-old walk named Freddy who will get his operation in August 2014. At the competition, nobody spent any money to support this as bakers, Barclays etc, sponsored it.

It was also Alex Body’s Birthday on the day that the competition was held. It was a wonderful day with the weather on our side.”

Kieran Greaves

Unfortunately, I don’t have any results. Roger

Important Reminder

Always check the newsletter for important closing dates. While we can’t publish closing dates for every tournament, we do try to advise readers of some important submission dates for Archery GB events.

If you’re not sure of anything, ask a member of the junior team. If they don’t know, they will find out or advise where to look. Mayflower Archers junior team do our best to assist all our members.

Remember also, the onus is on archers to determine any submission or closing date so the other place to look is the Archery GB website or contact the AGB junior Chairman.

Essex County Junior Target Championships 7th June

“On Saturday 7th June there was a competition held at Noak Hill archers. It was a 12 dozen round and very tiring! The weather was cloudy at first then heavy showers. It was good fun shooting in the rain! Then the rain stopped and we had glorious sunshine. There were lots of good archers from different clubs so we needed to try really hard.

Finally, everybody got good scores and some of the team won Rose awards. And possibly a new county record was set :)

Whilst we were there it was Hannah's 16th birthday and so we all sang happy birthday and embarrassed her :) We had birthday cake and it was really nice.

Morris our team mascot came along too! Emily Owens baked her famous brownies and, as always, they were very yummy!

Well done to everyone at Mayflower and I wish you luck for any competitions that may be coming up.”

By Emily Short Bristol 2 recurve Hannah Godden 2nd Alex Body 3rd Kieran Greaves 5th Bristol 3 recurve Emily Owens 2nd Compound Emily Mallion 2nd and Gold Rose claim Bristol 4 recurve Grace Butterfield 2nd Compound Sean Hale 2nd Bristol 5 Compound Emily Short 1st, County record, Six Gold end and Gold Rose claims.

On top of all that Mayflower recurve team were 3rd with again, Grace, Alex and Kieran

Then the compound team were 2nd with Emily Mallion, Emily Short and Sean Hale.

Brilliant day out for Mayflower juniors!

UK Masters, Lilleshall 7/8th June

Sophie Brown and James Howell are now both seniors and their scores, submitted as juniors, qualify them for the ‘UK Masters’. Just in case you were interested, I thought I’d demonstrate what Mayflower juniors can do once they’ve ‘grown up’. Remember, they follow in the steps of Mike Judd and Phil Glover to name but two more recent former Mayflower juniors.

Sophie qualified 9th in the ranking rounds to beat 24th placed Kim Swetman 148 to 127 in the 1/16th head to head eliminations, then beat Linda Townsend 145 to 140 in the 1/8th eliminations to meet Danielle Brown in the ¼ finals. Danni as you may remember, was the Paralympic Gold medallist in 2012. Unfortunately for Sophie, Danni won 143 to 137 to end Sophie’s brilliant run, but she finished 7th overall.

James qualified 8th, got a bye in the 1/32 eliminations to win 146 to 140 over Chris Horan in the 1/16th elimi-nation rounds then win again after a close battle with Alistair Whittingham 146 to 141 only for an equipment failure put him out of the ¼ finals against Jake Burn to finish 8th overall.

No matter whether they won or not, they were both competing against the best in the country and did themselves justice at a very competitive tournament.

FITA Field Archery experience

FITA Field is a different type of archery, shot mainly through natural woodland where every target is a different distance and at a different face size.

Coming up in October are the Essex County FITA Field Championships and by request, I’ve been asked if I would take a group to Panther Bowhunters in advance of the County Champs for you to try it out and get some sight marks.

The dates I have in mind are 23rd August and 20th September. If you are really lucky, I’ll do both.

If you are interested please let me know and I’ll arrange a visit. I’ll give the rules and format in advance and you will have a guide with you. Just let me know soon if you want to try Field Archery and which date.

If you find you like FITA Field, you can enter the tournament on 5th October.

National County Team Championships, Lilleshall 28/29th June

As it says, a national competition for county teams. Each county enters a team of 3 archers in each disci-pline, male, female, compound, recurve and longbow. Saturday is a 720 ranking round followed by team head to head rounds then a team FITA round on Sunday. Points are gained for each position and awards are won on points not accumulated. I.e. pointless wins; less points the higher the position.

Why do I think you are interested? Well six Mayflower members were selected to represent the Essex and Suffolk teams and four were former Mayflower juniors.

Essex & Suffolk teams Lady compound, Daisy Clark, Helen Harris & Sophie Brown Ranked 2nd (2 points), 4th in head to head matches (4 points) and 1st (1 point) in the FITA. Total 7 points, 2nd overall losing to Surrey with 6 points.

Gent compound, Phil Glover James Howell & James Sinclair Ranked 3rd, (3), 1st in head to head matches (1) and 1st (1) in the FITA. Total 5 points, 1st overall beating Hampshire with 7 points.

Lady recurve, (no Mayflower members). Ranked 2nd (2), 2nd in head to head matches (2) and were 2nd in the FITA (2). Total 6 points 2nd overall losing to Warwickshire with 3 points.

Gent recurve, Tim Davies, Ian Harris, Mike Judd Ranked 6th (6), 1st in head to head matches (1) and 1st in the FITA (1). Total 8 points, 1st overall beating Gloucestershire with 10 points.

Gents Longbow, (No Mayflower members) 5th, 5th and 5th. Total 15, 5th overall.

Ladies Longbow, no team selected from Essex & Suffolk.

All in all, a good day out for Essex & Suffolk clubs and a nice one for Mayflower.

Archery GB Progress Awards

Now under new Management

Kerry Owens has agreed organise this national award scheme for Mayflower Archers.

The scheme is for younger archer to develop their skills and can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores attained.

Scores can be attained in or outdoors and vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot.

All you need do is to make a note of your 3 dozen scores and submit them to claim the appropriate award. At any round you shoot save your first 3 dozen score, or you may shoot a score at a club meeting (save them on a score sheet) then send then to Kerry at [email protected] or see her at club.

Sounds easy doesn’t it? Then get collecting and sending to claim your award.

Wisely or unwisely, I’ve included the county top ten juniors list. If you don’t like it, take it up with the county records officer. For a start, I know Luke Wiseman shoots compound, but I only list the details that County publish.

GNAS ‘Summer Metrics’ postal tournament

This replaces the ’July Nationals’ and uses a Short Metric round, that you can shoot during July and August in the comfort of your own club.

Normal tournament rules apply, six dozen arrows, 3 at each distance on an 80 cm face using 10 zone scoring, six arrows for sighters etc. Distances given below.

Blank score sheets will be available for you so just shoot the round and give your scores to Lesley or Roger.

Just complete a separate score sheet for each time you shoot the round. Shoot the round any and as may times as you wish during July and August. , but only your best score will be submitted.

With any luck, results should be in mid November News update.

Full details of the round numbers will be on the club notice board and copy will be available on request.

Good shooting, but enjoy it.

“Our weekends away at GB Academy Camp.

It’s been almost a year now since the Academy started, I trained for 18 months to try for a place on the GB academy and had decided just to move on because they kept on delaying who had got on! Then as soon as I had decided this, the call came to offer me a place!

I accepted after all there were only 20 places on the Southern academy being offered! With an open mind, I started in September 2013, and what an amazing experience we have had, learning so much, so much more than just shooting!

This is no holiday camp! Every month we travel to Hartspury College in Gloucestershire, we have special per-mission to leave school early on the Friday, as we have to be on camp by 5 pm. sometimes it takes 4 hours to even get there!

Our Fridays start with dinner in the student restaurant – the campus is huge! It’s good to catch up with our Academy friends as we come from all over the south, we have already received our schedule for the week-end from our head coach too.

We are now outside shooting, having been in the gym for the last 7 months so after dinner we set up our outdoor area, then around 7 pm till 9 pm we have class room works, talks on relaxation, focusing, dope test-ing, strength and conditioning, nutrition, to name a few

Then at 9 pm our mini bus takes us back to the Ibis hotel where we stay whilst in Gloucestershire. Our rooms are allocated, we usually share, but we are not allowed out of our rooms! and its light out by 10!

SATURDAY starts with a departure time of 7.30 am from the hotel and then back to the college for break-fast! Our day starts at 8.30 with warm ups and setting up of our bows.

From 9 am we start! Last month we had 720 rounds, head to heads, team rounds, speed shooting and of course coaching all the way through, apart from our lunch break we are shooting till 7.30 pm

We then pack up for the evening before heading back to the class room for more class work, last month it was preparation for competitions.

Depart at 9 pm back to hotel and lights out by 10 pm

SUNDAY out again by 7.30, breakfast then at 8.45 we start out strength and conditioning in the gym with Rob our trainer, half are in here and the other half of the group are on the field shooting. We then swap around at 10 am and continue shooting right through till our parents arrive to collect us at 4 pm

I usually get into the car for the journey home and fall asleep arriving back home by 9-9.30 pm.

Ready for Monday back to school, and another week begins! We have training schedules to follow between camps, which included shooting 1000 arrows a week, gym work and drills, every Monday we have to fill in any competition reports forms and our training logs and send them into our coaches.

This is why on most Mondays I miss the club night, as I’m catching up my logs and planning my week ahead, I still have homework and revision to fit in, having just sat GCSE’s early.

We have some really big competitions coming up, our academies cup is held in Lilleshall soon where we shoot against the midlands academy and the northern academy, we still have to go out to big long competitions and shoot for qualification scores!

As I say it is an amazing (but very tiring) journey we are on and one day I may make it to a shoot for my country, but for now I’m just enjoying the experience.”

Alex Body That’s brilliant Alex. And thank you to all who were able to write a few words to make the newsletter more interesting. If I can’t be at a tournament, I do enjoy reading (and writing) about how you all enjoyed the experience. Keep up the good work.

Gift Ideas!

Mayflower Archers offer a Gift voucher scheme to cover the cost of a Beginner's course at £45.

Should any of your friends or family member fancy trying archery, this could be an ideal Christmas or birthday pre-sent for the budding Archer!

Vouchers are available from David Scorah at club, contact him at [email protected] or telephone him on 07860 155652

Mayflower Archers are running this scheme to help with all beginners, young, old, and existing members to help with there development in archery.

The FITA Beginner’s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their pro-gress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins.

The awards are based on three (3) attainments.

Performance: Shooting a limited distance with the emphasis on making the target rather than high scores. Skill: Body position, position on line, releasing

Knowledge & Know How’s: Range safety, basic bow set up

The awards are split into two categories:

1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled be-ginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer’s eligibility).

2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. Pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards).

The FITA Beginner’s Award Scheme is designed to reward the beginner at the various stages of their development, from shooting at very short distances 6- 10 metres, which is dependent on age, to the shortest indoor distance 18 metres and even further to near 30 metres. The size of the target faces will also vary, for feather awards 80 cm spot face or 40 cm face counting hits only, for arrow awards 80 cm full face using conventional FITA scoring.

Anyone wishing to participate in this programme please contact David Scorah at [email protected] Or telephone him on 01268 735678.

FITA Beginner’s Awards.

Feather & Arrow

Mayflower Distance Awards

These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses using 5 zone scoring and you need to do this 3 times for each distance.

The awards are: White—20 yards; Black—30 yards; Blue—40 yards; Red—50 yards; Gold—60 yards; Green—80 yards.

There is no fee, no judge or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, note your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from Lesley Howell.

Easy isn’t it?
