JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS | FRIDAY 5 APRIL 2019
NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS
From the Deputy Head Master - Summer HillIn my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I amgoing there to prepare a place for you. John 14:2
Vale Kenneth King Him To - 7.vii.MCMXCII - 19.iii.MMXIX
Dearest Heavenly Father,
We give you thanks for Kenneth’s life and pray for the To family whose sense of loss is so keen after his funeralthis week. We can’t understand why some things happen and pray that, as they are weighed down with grief, that they are upheld in Your love. Give them a sense of assurance of your constant care and courage for the daysand weeks ahead.
Amen
Last Friday evening we held the inaugural Summer Sport Presentation Evening for our 1st and 2nd Grade teamsin Basketball, Cricket, Tennis, Volleyball and Water Polo. It was a night to recognise excellence, enjoy the specialcamaraderie that is hard to replicate outside a team environment, for one last time for the players, supportersand coaches, and a celebration of the pure pleasure of playing sport. It was an opportunity for the players toexpress their thanks to their coaches, and a time to reflect on the lessons that may be learned on the field, thecourt or in the pool, even in the face of tribulation.
One of the characteristics of Trinity Grammar School is the commitment of our Year 12 young men to the

demands of playing at the 1st and 2nd Grade level, a tradition we value highly. To the Year 12s who committedto the additional training and provided such valuable leadership, the School both recognises and values yourcontribution. To the Captains; Alec Mackenzie (12WJ), Kenneth Chu (12Mu), James McCabe (11St), NicholasTsiakos (12We) and Oscar Jones (12La), well done on your leadership and example.
At Trinity, we also believe that, if you are good enough, you are old enough, and I am always slightly amazedthat we have young athletes who can compete at the 1st Grade level while still in Middle School, and this yearthere was a significant representation. Bailey Chambers (9Ta), James Moore (8Ta), Max Nguyen (9Yo), DylanGuler (9WJ) and Lucas Young (8We) all represented the School in 1st Grade. Lucas was also selected to representthe Combined Associated Schools Open Water Polo Team, an outstanding achievement.
In addition to Lucas, Tyrese Proctor (10Fo), Sebastian Buchanan (11Sc), Luca Dimeglio (11La), Ritvik Dinesh(12Ke), James McCabe (11St), Tristan Glanznig (11Ta) and Kai Young (11We) represented the CombinedAssociated Schools representative teams. James was selected for the New South Wales All Schools’ Tennis Teamand Tristan and Kai were both named in Australian Water Polo Squads in the week leading up to PresentationNight.
We entered ten teams in the 1st and 2nd Grade CAS Competitions and we had four teams win Premierships. The1st and 2nd VI Volleyball continued their extraordinary dominance in both Summer and Winter competition, andthe 2nd XI Cricket and 2nd VII Water Polo both went back to back to make it consecutive Premierships.
The School expressed its thanks to the Director of Sport and Co-curricular, the Sportsmaster, the Directors andCoaches in the Head Master’s Bulletin and on the Quad in the week following the end of the season, but it bearsrepeating that this group of coaches and mentors go above and beyond in their commitment to the boys of theSchool. The care, mentoring and the high standards they demand reflect their love of the game and theirprofessionalism. In my opinion, the young athletes of Trinity Grammar School will be better men as a result oftheir coaching.

From the Master of the Junior SchoolIn him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordancewith the riches of God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7
Dear Parents and Friends of the Junior School,
I thank all parents for your support and enthusiastic partnership with us across a busy term, which has includedmany events on school days, school nights and weekends. This week has seen parent attendance at a number ofevents: Years 4 and 6 participated in Amazing Me; K-2 drew a crowd for their colourful Easter Hat Parade;parents gave feedback and asked questions at this term’s Cuppa’n’chat; and we have had parent helpers inKindergarten and Year 1 Reading Groups.

It is terrific to see our students engaging across the year groups in our Buddies activities. Our Year 6 boysspend time in the Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms each fortnight getting to know the younger boys.Buddies activities encourage social and personal development. Year 6 has the opportunity to exercise leadershipand care, and the younger boys love the attention and modelling that the older boys provide.
The School recommends that parents are vigilant and exercise caution in regards to student social media use.The use of social media by children and young people is a particular area where students can make errors andparents are often unaware of how to supervise and educate their children in this regard. Whilst many youngerstudents are yet to use social media, parents of boys who use connected devices (even for brief periods of time)should not assume that their son is too young to be active on social media. Under-age participation on socialmedia sites is increasingly an area where students are making mistakes. The boundaries between private andpublic domains on social media sites are often blurred in the minds of younger users. Many fail to realise theirimages or words are being launched into the public domain where they sacrifice control. Sites which often have avery personal feel about them may be accessed by anyone. Images or text sent to someone else’s device in amoment of rash excitement can be forwarded to many others and remain accessible forever. This is one reasonthat most social media sites (for example, Facebook and Instagram) are restricted to users aged 13 and above.Young children do not necessarily have the judgment required to make sensible decisions in these environmentsand can be exposed to ideas and images that they are not mature enough to comprehend or filter appropriately. If a child lies about his or her age or parents ignore age guidelines in permitting their children access, they arepotentially opening themselves up to communications or advertisements of an adult nature. As these sites areseldom moderated or reviewed by adults, children can be tempted into inappropriate behaviours they wouldnever contemplate in the real world, such as bullying, verbal abuse, or sharing of inappropriate images. They alsorisk inadvertently allowing others access to their personal details. Even adults can be unaware of how personalinformation is harvested and used! We continually urge parents to heed media age guidelines as the boundariesyou put in place for your children can promote your own child’s safety and the safety of the other children intheir network. Mr Karagiannis had some great cyber-safety tips for parents in last week’s newsletter which areincluded again this week. Parents will also find the e-safety Commisioner’s website (follow this link) a great place

We wish them a safe and enjoyable trip. In their absence, Year 5 will step us as leaders in theSchool.

ACADEMIC
Outdoor Artmaking in Year 2In Visual Arts, Year 2 has been exploring ways that emotions can be expressed using lines, and have looked atartists who use bold linework, including Willem de Kooning and the Abstract Expressionists. We had a lot of funrecently, practising continuous-line portraits and gestural mark making on a giant roll of paper outside in thecourtyard! We used black ink with brushes and sticks, and this week we’ll be adding colour with food dyes. I can’twait to display the results.

Library News | Junior SchoolLibrary Champions
All students in Year 6 at the Junior School undertake a leadership position, in order to serve the schoolcommunity and develop their leadership skills. We are fortunate to have a group of these Year 6 students whohave chosen the leadership role of Library Champions.
Marcello Condoluci, Lucas Dockrill, Ewan Fouracre, Hannan Manche, Charlie Nice and Ben Warrilow will beassisting us in the Library for the remainder of the year, with both practical matters such as shelving, tidying andmoving the furniture around each week, but also more importantly by providing their opinions and expertise, andguiding the books and services the Library offers.
The group are called ‘Library Champions' as it is their role to champion the Library to other students, staff andindeed parents! These boys have already shown their champion abilities by assisting younger boys at lunchtimes and making suggestions for resources to improve the overall Library experience. They have also created a‘recommended by Library Champions’ book display, which will feature regularly changing titles with LibraryChampion ratings and suggested reading age.
We look forward to the things we will achieve over the year with the help of our Library Champions and willprovide a more in depth look at who they are and what they do in our Library Champion spotlights in the Term 2newsletters.

Cybersafety @ HomeAs we conclude Internet Safety Week in the Junior School, the never ending task of growing our boys to becomedigitally fluent global citizens continues. Throughout the year, boys will be involved in further cybersafetyeducation incorporated into classroom activities, our robust lifeskills programme and eSmart week. Trinity isproud to be an eSmart school, an initiative of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, that uses a cultural changeapproach to improve cyber safety and reduce cyber bullying.
The internet has become an integral part of life and education. It’s a powerful resource, enabling people of allages to learn and communicate in new ways. For all of its benefits, there is no denying that the internetpresents a number of risks to children and challenges for parents. The School has identified four key steps forparents to adopt cyber safe practices at home:
1. Educate – an essential part of keeping children safe is to make them aware of risks and discuss ways toavoid potential problems. Please see the links below for internet safety resources.
2. Empower – encourage and support your son so that he can become a confident internet user. Childrenneed to know that they are able to make the right choices and that they can talk to parents aboutanything that makes them feel uncomfortable online.
3. Make computers safe – one of the most practical ways of keeping children safe online is to adoptinternet content filters that other security software to home computers.
4. Supervise – boys may behave differently online so it’s important to be involved. Placing computers infamily areas can help make supervision easier for parents.

All ISPs in Australia are required to provide an Internet Content filter approved by the ACMA. Filter offerings varybetween providers and no filtering solution is foolproof.
