The greatest bat diversity around the world appears to be found in the tropical rain forest of SE Asia. In Thailand, at least 138 species, in 11 families and 45 genera of bats have been recorded. This number of bat species represents the most diverse group of Thai mammalian fauna. However, the current number of species seems to be underestimated and more new species are waiting to be discovered. Moreover, taxonomic problems of many groups of bats impact the reliability of species identification, monitoring and also the evaluation of biodiversity within the country. While knowledge about bat diversity in Thailand is uncertain, bat roosting and foraging habitats have been severely disturbed by human activities. Therefore, this checklist of bats of Thailand has been developed based upon several data sources, including literature, recent discoveries of new species and also unpublished data from recent field surveys. Some new species, new records and taxa elevated to species rank, are added to the list. Some species lacking supporting evidence and those proven to be synonyms or subspecies, are omitted. The current checklist of Thai bats, with the most up-to-date information on their distribution and taxonomic remarks, will be useful for the general management of biodiversity and for future research in the country. 1/ . . . 90110Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum, Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai, Songkhla, Thailand 90110, * E-mail: [email protected]

A CHECKLIST OF BATS(MAMMALIA: CHIROPTERA) IN THAILAND

    ABSTRACT

There are currently more than 1300 species of bats known to science. The greatest bat diversity

around the world appears to be found in the tropical rain forest of SE Asia. In Thailand, at least

138 species, in 11 families and 45 genera of bats have been recorded. This number of bat species

represents the most diverse group of Thai mammalian fauna. However, the current number of

species seems to be underestimated and more new species are waiting to be discovered. Moreover,

taxonomic problems of many groups of bats impact the reliability of species identification,

monitoring and also the evaluation of biodiversity within the country. While knowledge about bat

diversity in Thailand is uncertain, bat roosting and foraging habitats have been severely disturbed

by human activities. Therefore, this checklist of bats of Thailand has been developed based upon

several data sources, including literature, recent discoveries of new species and also unpublished

data from recent field surveys. Some new species, new records and taxa elevated to species rank,

are added to the list. Some species lacking supporting evidence and those proven to be synonyms

or subspecies, are omitted. The current checklist of Thai bats, with the most up-to-date

information on their distribution and taxonomic remarks, will be useful for the general

management of biodiversity and for future research in the country.
