History of EOS

EOS는 1993년에 설립된 대한민국에서 가장 긴 역사를 자랑하는 ESL (English as Second Language)

전문 교육기관의하나 입니다. 오늘날까지 만여명의 학생이 Main Campus를 거쳐 갔으며 현재 EOS 출신

학생들은 UC Buckley, UCLA, Indiana University, University of Texas, Cornell University, Havard

University, Yale University, UIUC, North Western 등 세계적인 명문 대학을 재학 또는 졸업 하여 세계로

진출해 있습니다. 2000년도 부터 타 영어 전문 교육기관들과의 차별성을 위하여 미국에 10개의 자매 결연

학교를 시작으로 지속적으로 자매결연 학교들을 늘려 왔으며, 그들과의 프로그램 교환, Summer School

For over 20 years, EOS Wingsly has been extremely successful in providing our students with a solid educational foundation. Whenever we try to explain how we accomplish this, invariably the words “The EOS Way” are used. The logical question that follows is: “What is the EOS Way?” It is not easy to explain EOS Wingsly and the EOS way unless you have actually experienced it. It is a combination of so many factors, some that are tangible and some that are not. It is a feeling, an approach, an attitude, a philosophy, a mind-set, and an atmosphere. There is a uniqueness and a quaintness that sets EOS apart from other ESL institution. That uniqueness is expressed in the values we hold.

We intentionally develop the joy of learning to provide the basis of lifelong learning. We nurture honor and character in our students to develop excellence in the whole person. We practice discipline to reinforce a sense of responsibility in each student. Because we value the individuality of each student, teachers are empowered to be flexible to adapt teaching methods to their individual needs. We approach each situation with compassion for others. …We mind our manners.How do we implement the EOS Way practically?

EOS teachers are trusted to TEACH using their own creativity and techniques to get the curriculum objectives across to their students. They are indeed a dedicated and talented group of educators. They are certainly an important part of the “EOS Way.” Another factor in the “EOS Way” is structure. Structure is not a bad word to us. It has been proven that our orderly classroom procedures create a learningenvironment that works and nurtures our students. There are rules and expectations that are in place that put our children on the right path to learning. Structure and consistency contribute to a safe, nurturing environment. Another factor in the “EOS Way” is that we use textbooks from U.S publishers. Over the years, we found out that Korean publisher did not meet our goals, so we chose the best of several from U.S. This has produced a curriculum that is strong and vital. Each book is chosen for a reason and teachers are expected to teach what is in that book. The “EOS Way” produces students who have mastered the English skills that are important and necessary for their English level and their future. Our curriculum is challenging, however, it meets the needs of our students and we refuse to “water it down.” We have students who understand that they must “reach” a bit to succeed and who know that they have to earn their grades. We also have students who are mannerly, kind, and respectful. They respect their teachers and know they have the support of everyone on campus. Our students know that they have what it takes to succeed and that they can “fly.” We also encourage our teachers to learn and grow their professional skills; I always say to teachers, “We need to grow a little new wood each day.” We encourage our teachers and build them up. We endeavor to facilitate that growth by providing workshops, bringing in speakers, and making our teachers aware of research in education and philosophies which in turn generate thought, discussions, and new teaching ideas. The administration recognizes the difficulty of the teachers’ jobs and supports them in any way possible. Rest assured that the “EOS Way” will not go by the wayside. It is who we are. Maybeit is difficult to explain, but it is there in each and every student who goes through our grades, and it is in the heart of every teacher. Our students will continue to be given roots to grow and wings to fly!

지난 20여년 동안 EOS의 교육 이념를 학생들에게 성공적으로 전해왔습니다.

어떻게 어린이들에게 최상의 교육을 제공했는지에 물으면 항상 저는 그것은

“EOS way” 때문이라 설명 드립니다. 그럼 다들 “EOS way”가 어떤 것이라고

물어보시겠죠? 하지만 EOS를 경험하지 못했다면 단순히 말로 설명하여 100프로

이해하기는 쉽지 않을 것이라고 생각합니다. EOS가 지켜나가는 교육적 철학,

사고방식, 접근법, 및 환경 등의 여러 요소들이 결합되어 다른 곳보다 더 특별하고

앞서나가는 곳으로 자리 잡아져 있기 때문이죠.

EOS에는 기본적인 Lifelong Learning (평생교육법)을 즐겁게 배울 수 있도록

프로그램이 조성되어 있습니다. 저희는 각자의 장점과 개성을 키워 우수한 어린이가

될 수 있도록 성장시킵니다. 또한 책임의 의미와 실천에 대해 학생들에게 인지시키고

교육시킵니다. 어떻게 실질적으로 EOS 교육 방식 및 이념을 시행 시킬 수 있는지는

선생님들 그리고 EOS 체계방식의 2가지 요소에 따라 결정됩니다. EOS 선생님들은

각자의 창의적인 방식으로 EOS 커리큘럼을 중심으로 수업을 하고있습니다.

EOS 선생님들은 교육에 대해 열성적이며 가르치는 것에 재능이 뛰어난 선생님들로

구성되어 있습니다. 그러므로 모든 EOS 선생님들은 EOS가 계속하여 교육 이념을

실천할 수 있도록 해주는 중요한 일원입니다.

EOS만의 교육에서 큰 부분을 차지하는 것은 Structure(체계방식)입니다. EOS의

체계적인 수업 과정은 학생들이 학습하기에 최적의 환경으로 이루어진 것이 지난

과거 학생들을 통해 증명어 있습니다. 학생들이 지키고 따라야 하는 규칙 및 요구

사항들은 올바른 학습의 길을 걸을 수 있도록 지도 해줍니다. 또 다른 중요 요소 중

하나는 EOS에서 사용하는 미국 서적 교과서들입니다. 수 년간 한국 서적 교과서들은

EOS 교육 목표와 맞지 않다는 것을 발견해 직접 미국에서 최상의 책을 선발하여

사용하고 있습니다. 각각의 선발된 교과서들은 특정한 이유로 선정되었으며 선생님

들은 이것을 통해 학생들을 가르칠 수 있도록 숙달되어 있습니다. 이를 통해 좀 더

체계적이고 의미 있는 커리큘럼을 계획할 수 있었습니다. EOS의 체계방식은 어린이

들에게 필요하고 중요한 영어를 완전히 익힐 수 있도록 큰 역할이 됩니다. EOS 커리

큘럼은 도전적이지만 학생들이 필요한 것을 충족해 줍니다. EOS 학생들은 꿈을 이루

고 학점에 대한 올바른 의식을 지니고 있습니다. 또한 EOS 학생들은 예절이 바르며

배려심과 존경심이 강합니다. 모든 선생님들을 공경하며 서로서로 도우며 함께 생활

해야 되는 것에 많이 익숙해있습니다. 그러므로 EOS학생들은 성공하기 위해서 어떤

것들이 필요로 하며 이를 이루기 위해 어떠한 계획을 세워야 하는 지에 대해 다른

학생들보다 앞서 있습니다.

EOS는 선생님들의 전문 능력을 향상 시킬수 있게 지원합니다. 저는 항상 선생님들

에게 “We need to grow a little new wood each day” (우리는 매일 작은 새로운

숲을 더욱 길러야 합니다) 라고 말합니다. 또한 EOS는 선생님에게 용기를 주고 그들

의 실력을 단력시킵니다. EOS는 워크샵, 모의수업, 새로운 수업 아이디어 교류 등을

제공하여 선생님들이 더욱 성장 할 수 있게 노력합니다. 행정부 또한 선생님들이

어려워 하거나 도움이 필요한 부분들을 체크하여 성공적으로 해낼수 있도록 적극적

으로 도와줍니다. “EOS way”는 절대 사라지지 않습니다. 그것은 EOS 그 자체 이기

때문이지요. 말로 다 설명 드리기는 어렵지만, EOS의 모든 학생들 그리고 선생님들

EOS Facilities

EOS 건물은 각각 포인트마다 다양한 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 2000년도 당시 건물 디자인을 하면서 외국의 타 명문 학교들 처럼 아이들을

위한 디자인과 Symbol들로 구성했습니다. 200년 이상을 목표로 디자인 된 EOS의 건물에는 Main entrance부터 다릅니다. 6개의 기둥이

상징인 EOS건물의 정면은 지구가 품고 있는 Five oceans and Six continents(오대양 육대주)를 상징하고 있습니다. 6개의 기둥이 바로

여섯 개의 대륙 입니다. 그리고 그 기둥 사이 사이의 5개의 공간이 6개의 대륙을 품고 있는 5개의 바다를 상징합니다. 그 사이 계단으로

EOS를 들어옴으로써 아이들은 세계를 통해 EOS를 들어오는것 입니다. 건물에도 하나하나의 정신이 있고 그 속에서 EOS의 어학생들이

오늘도 안전하고 행복한 생활을 합니다.

EOS building delineates various significances. When it was established in 2000, we designed it to have similar

atmosphere like other foreign prestigious schools for our children. Our EOS building is uniquely structured and

built. Even our front entrance is exclusive. The facade of building symbolizes five oceans and six continents

on Earth. More specifically, five oceans are represented by the space in-between pillars and six continents are

represented by six pillars. Thus, when children walk into EOS through stairs, it has means of children enters EOS

through the world. EOS building possesses spirits and our children grow within that spirits.

The word ‘Wingsly’ signifies a bird’s wing and ‘Lyceum’ is the name of academy in Athens thatis established by Aristotle. ‘Wingsly’ is another name for EOS. The goal of Winglsy is to lead your children to higher places through our program.

Wingsly School is using the most effective teaching method that is designed by linguists who have researched bilingual people and ESL (English as a Second Language) speakers to see how they learned.

Teachers’ Qualification (선생님 구성)

모든 선생님들은 북미 명문대학 출신들로서 EOS의 엄격한 선정 기준을

통해서 선택 되었습니다. (1차 서류 전형 체크 후 두 번의 인터뷰와 마지막

으로 자격 요건 심사를 거쳐서 선정됩니다.) 선생님들의 주요 전공은

Children Education, Children Behavior Psychology, English 이며,

대부분의 선생님들이 이미 북미 현지에서 학교 선생님으로 활동을 하시고

정식 teaching license를 보유 하시고 있습니다.

EOS에 근무하는 모든 Homeroom 선생님들은 북미 출신의 영어가

mother language (모국어)인 외국인 입니다. 모든 선생님 전원

합법적으로 교육청에 정식 등록된 정규 교사들 입니다. 선생님들은

크게 한국어가 가능하신 재미교포 선생님들과 어린이들에게 이국적

인 환경을 안겨줄 외국인 선생님들로 구성되어 있습니다. EOS는 정기

Textbook 중심인 Main Course와 다르게, 특정한 topic을 통한 자유로운 토론, cultural background study(문화학습), field trip

observation등 다양한 종류의 program을 하게 됩니다. AP 프로그램을 통하여 어린이들은 평소에 자주 사용 할 수 없는 표현들을

학습하고 연습할 수 있으며, 특히 딱딱한 영어가 아닌 spoken language(구어)를 습득할 수 있습니다.

AP Program (주 1회, 주2회 중 선택 가능)

Prep Program – Tutoring (맞춤형 프로그램)

Prep Program 의 1:1 또는 2:1로 진행되며 학생이 필요로 하는 English Skill (영어 능력) 또는 Subject(과목)으로 수업이

구성됩니다. 개별적으로 Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening의 balance가 무너져서 영역별 도움이 필요할 때, 또는

집중적으로 빠른 시간에 영어 능력을 올릴 때, 그리고 유학중이거나 외국인 학교에서 과목별로 수업이 필요할 때에 주로 사용됩니다.

100% 수강 해당 학생만을 위해서 전문가들과 담당 선생님들을 통해 Curriculum이 구성 되며, 집중적인 관리를 받을 수 있습니다.

따라서 AP Course를 통하여 자연스럽게 말하기 수행평가, 서술형논술평가 대비가 되며 표현 영어가 강화된 중, 고등학교의 서술 논술형

내신도 대비가 됩니다.

표현 영어는 오늘날 가장 중요한 평가 요소입니다. AP Program은 Reading, Listening에서 학습한 배경지식을 중심으로 Speaking,

Writing 능력을 배양하여 표현 영어의 절대 강자를 목표로 합니다.

Prep Course는 미국 보딩 스쿨의 수업방식으로 개인차 교육을 할 수 있는 EOS 학생 개개인만을 위한 특별한 프로그램입니다.

EOS는 Learning Castle Program으로 학생들이 집에서 온라인을 통하여 자가학습을 진행하고 있습니다. 프로그램에 선정된 도서들은 level별로 이루어져 있으며 다양한 장르를 가지고 있습니다.

담임 선생님이 점수와Book Report (독서록) 체크를 통하여 feedback을 주며, 지속적인 tracking으로 학생들의 강점과 약점을 찾아 발전, 보완 해 줍니다.

Main Course (주 3회)

현재 미국에서 사립학교들과 ESL 학생들에게 사용되는 교재들을 사용합니다. 단계별로 Beginner(기초)부터 Grade 12 (미국 고3)까지 활용되는 교과들 입니다.

수업 또한 실제 미국 클래스처럼 다양한 activity를 하게 됩니다. 그룹 프로젝트, 관찰 &체험 학습, 프리젠테이션, 등.

학년별, 단계별로text book에 맞추어져주3회 단어시험이 이루어 집니다. 수업시간에배울 지문의 어휘를 미리 학습함으로써 수업의 이해도가 향상되며, 지속적인 훈련을 통한 어휘력 향상은 추후에 Strong Writer가 될 수 있는 발판이 됩니다.

Practical Life Exercises (PLE)

매 분기마다 학생들은 일정기간 동안 학습한 내용을 확인하기 위해서 EOS에서 curriculum 별로 제작한 시험을 치르게됩니다. Test 이후에는 manager와 상담을 통하여 다음 분기의 공부 방향을 재정비하고 학생들에게 새로운 goal를 심어줍니다.

시험 후 Progress Report (평가표)가 배부됩니다. 지난 분기동안 학생들이 어떻게 공부하여 왔는지 확인할 수 있으시며, 단어시험들의 평균점수, 담당 선생님들의 comment또한 기록됩니다.

선진국들에서 중요시 되는 학습법인 PLE (실생활 안에서의 연습)를 통하여 학생들이 언제 어디서나 상황에 따라 영어를 구사할 수 있습니다. 이를 통하여학생들은 더 즐겁고 친근하게 영어를 학습하고 사용할 수 있으며,Song, Cooking, Role Playing중심으로 프로그램이 짜여져 있습니다.

Monthly Schedule & Homework (월간 계획표 및 숙제)

매월 마지막 주에 다음 달 학습계획에 대한 안내문이 배부되며 교재 및 진도와 기타 안내 사항이 포함되어 있습니다. 학생들은 당일 수업에 관련된 교재를 준비하도록 합니다. 또한 Monthly Schedule와 함께 한달 간의 숙제가 부여되므로 예습 및 복습이 이루어지도록 합니다.

Motivation Programs (동기 부여 프로그램)

학생들의 영어에 대한 학습동기 유발을 위한 다양한 동기 부여 프록그램이진행되는데 VOCA King Festival, PLE Program ( Cooking, Project 수업), Best Speaker, Best Essay, Top of the level, Day Camp, 다양한 Cultural Event 등이 있습니다.

TEST - 학생 평가를 위한 다양한 테스트가 있는데 다음과 같습니다.

Placement test - Class 배치를 위한 테스트로 처음 입학 시와 Advanced level로 올라가는 경우 등에 실시합니다. Achievement test - 학습 성취도 평가로 분기별로 테스트가 4가지 영역 별로 이루어지며 Progress Report가 배부됩니다. Diagnostic test ( 진단 테스트 ) - 학생의 부족한 부분이나 역량을 테스트하기 위하여 실시합니다. Daily Vocabulary Test - 일정기간동안 매일(주 3회) 어휘력 테스트가 시행되는데 이는 그날 배울 내용을 미리 예습 하는 것 으로 당일 수업을 충실히 그리고 자신감 있게 하는 데 많은 도움이 됩니다.

Temporary School Closure (임시 휴교)

Snow day (눈이 많이 오는 날), 이상기후 등의 이유로 인하여 학생의 안전에 위험이 따른다고 판단 될 때에는 불가피하게 수업을 못할 수도 있습니다. 이 때에는 EOS에서 부모님께 연락을 취하게 되며, 부모님께서도 EOS로 연락하여 확인하시면 안내 받으실 수 있습니다.

EOS Golden Club (EOS 골든클럽)

EOS학생들 중에서 모범이 되는 학생으로 선정되면 영예의 EOS Golden Club에 등재 됩니다. 자신감과 올바른 경쟁심을 이끌어 주는 목적으로 시행되며, 분기별로 선정됩니다. 클럽에 등재되기 위해서는 매월 Good Student List에 오르는 (Good Student Award)등의 엄격한 조건을 갖추어야 합니다.

class homeroom teacher이 정기적으로 부모님께 전화를 드려서 학생들의 EOS생활과 성적 등에 대하여 상담을 하게 되며 부모님께서는 평상시 궁금했던 사항을 이야기하시면 도움이 될 것입니다.

Parents Individual PTA (부모님 개별 상담)

전반기와 하반기에 각각 한 번씩 부모님과 개별 상담이 실시되며 이 때에는 학생들의 성취도나 생활에 대해서 보다 자세한 상담을 하실 수 있습니다.

EOS는 설립이래 국내외에 있는 저명한 학교들과 Cultural exchange,Program exchange등 다양한 교류를 위해 자매결연을 추진하여 왔습니다. 1995년 ECLC와의 자매 결연을 시작으로 지난 20여년간 12개의 International School과 캐나다,미국 현지 학교들과 정식 자매결연을 맺였습니다. 특히 Browne Academy는 EOS Wingsly School 어린이들이 Summer School Program에도 직접 참여 하는 등 가장 활발한 교류를 이루고 있습니다.

Sister School들과의 교류를 통하여서, 학생들은 한국에 국한된 사회 생활이 아닌, 더 나아가 국제적인 경험을 가질 수 있습니다. 프로그램 또한, 한 시대에 국한 된 프로그램이 아닌, 북미 교육의 흐름의 변화에 따른 프로그램의 변화와 발전 또한 더욱 유동적이며 적극적으로 반영이 가능합니다.

EOS의 여름방학 해외 연수 프로그램은, 자매결연 학교의 Summer School Program에 직접 참여하는 방법을 택하고 있습니다.북미의 Summer School Program은 학생들이 공부 중심 보다는 다양한 Activity와 Discussion 로 구성되어 있으며, Class size는 주로 12~15명이고 EOS 학생들은 1~2명이 반마다 참여 하게 됩니다. (비율 12:1 ~ 15:2)

EOS의 여름방학 해외 연수의 특징 중 하나는 동부의 역사사 체험과 명문 대학교들의 방문입니다. 대부분의 연수가 동부의 명문 Private School에서 이루어 지기 때문에 주말을 이용하여 역사적인 명소들과 긴 역사를 자랑하는 명문 대학교 캠퍼스 들을 직접 두눈으로 보고느끼게 됩니다.

EOS의 해외 연수 프로그램은 학생들의 영어 향상 목표 뿐 아니라, Peer들 끼리의 문화적 교류, 다양한 문화가 섞여있는 미국의 역사와 문화 탐방, 그리고 세계적으로 인정 받는 미국 교육의 장에서의 경험을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

It consists of a variety of Activity and Discussion rather than studying in Summer School Program. Class size is usually 12-15 students and 1~2 EOS children get to participate this program. (Ratio of 12:1 ~ 15:2)

The one of the merits for EOS summer study abroad program is to visit the historic and prestigious University. Students get to tour around the famous historic sites and other prestigious private schools during the weekend because the program mainly takes place in Eastern areas of the North America.

The goal of EOS abroad programis to improve student’s English. Also, we aim to provide an opportunity to students where they can experience the cultural exchanges, a mixture of various cultures of American history and culture, and education.

ECLC was the first sister schoolin 1995 and we have been settingup a sisterhood relationship withother 12 schools in Korea and North America during past 20 years to execute cultural exchange and exchange student program. In particular, EOS interacts most regularly with Browne Academy including direct involvement in the Summer School Program.

EOS program applies the North America education system to make it more appealing and dynamic to children. Moreover, through interaction with the Sister Schools, children can experience and explore new cultures and life-styles.

One of EOS strengths is the study abroad preparation program for any childrenfrom kindergarten up to Grade 12. The program is available for each course
