Joshua came 2nd in the Australian Bouldering Nationals and 7th in the lead climbing competition in Villawood. At the same competition, Joshua was given a wild card entry into the Australian team. This was an opportunity for him to demonstrate his talent and to compete against the best on a world scale. Joshua’s aim is to be in the world top 30 in the Italian championships.
Mentor Project.
Meet our Scenic World Blue Mountains mentors for 2019. They are hanging out with some of our students over the next few months. Such a lovely group of people. We are very fortunate that the school has an ongoing partnership with Scenic World. Scenic World is a significant employer of our students. Many of our former students have become involved in the tourism industry or have combined university studies with employment while at Scenic World.

Winter Magic Creativity
Winter Magic returned with all the colour and vibrancy of the past. No parade, but the audience was definitely entertained by a fabulous line up of musicians, artists and street performers. Many of our school students and teachers performed! The jazz and concert band opened the festival and warmed the audience on a stunning but cold morning , the talented Akira and Matthias played at the Avalon , and Breathing Underwater w/Aurora Li, enchanted the
audience with their unique sound and ability.
Akira from the band ‘Fast and Bulbous’, The band features both Matthias and Akira, a jazz guitar duo.
Breathing Underwater, performed
at the Aunty Jack’s
The school was successful in gaining a Winter Magic Arts Grant to create an art piece for the festival. Working with Linda Seiffert, Year 10 Art students have created a piece called "After Dark". This can be seen in

Katoomba High School students have volunteered to help out at the Katoomba Public School athletics carnival. The students were all former students of KPS. The primary schools’ teachers and students were delighted to see them again and to catch up. Many
thanks to Gabe, Kieran, Annable from year 10 and Indigo, Ariel, Ella and Bonnie from year 8 who were fine representatives of our school.
Regional Shakespeare Carnival Winners Katoomba High School Drama and Dance students competed at the Regional Shakespeare Carnival at Jamison High School. The competition is run by the highly regarded Sport for Jove Theatre Company and has students all across the state creating performances from and inspired by Shakespeare’s plays.
Year 10 Drama students had the Judges rolling with laughter with their performance “The Pitch” which followed a “Film Pitch” that mashed together Romeo and Juliet with Macbeth. Our students were praised for their timing, originality and ensemble performance.
Not to be outdone our Year 9 Dance students performed and are now warming up to compete at State level for their Dance performance inspired by Romeo and Juliet.
Katoomba High School also won in the category of Smart Film. Year 10 Drama students Molly Normand and Miriam Nelson’s parody of the ABC series “You Can’t Ask That”

Country Mountains Bike Championship
Congratulations to Aaron, Indigo and Jason for their success in the 2019 JetBlack NSW All Schools XC MTB Championship at Yellomundee on June 16th. KHS was represented by 13 students in the 4-hour team event riding a 4.5km dirt singletrack loop competing against 18 schools across the state. It was a wet start but that didn't deter them from riding hard lap after lap.

KHS 100th Centenary
Don’t forget to save the date for the KHS 100th Celebration. The Open Day is Saturday 10th August 10am-2pm.
Futsal Championships It was 4am when the alarm went off and it was -5 degrees when we arrived at Orange to play in the Country Regional Futsal Championships. Two KHS teams entered and supported each other throughout the day. Our 16's boys team played very well, but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. They were placed in the toughest group though, with three teams from their group eventually making it to the semi-finals. Our 16's girls had a fantastic day, winning their first two group games and drawing their third to top the group. This put them into the semi-finals where they played a strong Cowra High team. In a tight contest, our girls scraped over the line 2-1. It was at this point that they ran out of energy and narrowly lost the final. Still, making it past the semi-final was the girls objective as it now means they qualify for the State Championships on 1st August at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium. As a wise person once said, "How good is futsal?"
Sharp Short Theatre “Happiness is a price tag away” wins awards
Year 11 Drama students have performed and won a major award at the Sharp Short Theatre competition at Parramatta Riverside theatre. The performance is titled “Happiness is a price tag away”.
Sharp Short Theatre is a Theatre competition that recognises and celebrates young playwrights and performers. Students can write, direct and perform their own works on a professional stage and receive feedback from industry professionals. Katoomba High School performed alongside Hunter School of Performing Arts, Oxley College, Sydney Talent School and the list goes on.
The performance written by Year 11 Drama student Ezri Hebden-Sharp follows a consumer driven society whose people are manipulated to buy products that we do not need. The unique work is told through the vehicle of musical theatre and lyrics and live music developed and composed by the students.
The toe tapping songs mixed with dance sequences and fabulous characters led to the performance winning the Mentors choice award and the students performed at the Final of the Sharp Short Theatre competition.
The award recognised the unique storytelling, style of Theatre chosen and ensemble performance of the students and received the loudest applause in the Theatre. Congratulations to incredibly talented Year 11 Drama class.

Food art Year 11 Food Technology had the opportunity to practice their food styling and food photography skills. TAS are pretty proud of their efforts.
Year 11 English Excursion This term in Year 11 English Studies we have been studying a unit on “Travel’ and the class had an assignment to organise an
excursion by ourselves. We decided to go to Manly Beach. After a long train trip, and only one class member getting the wrong train, we finally arrived at Circular Quay which led us to the ferry that continued our trip taking us to our main destination, Manly Beach. When we arrived we headed for the Manly Art Gallery and Museum, where we learnt about local artists and the culture of the beach. Once the tour concluded we headed in the direction of food, where we all split up to choose our lunches. After getting swarmed with seagulls we went and got some ice cream which we ate by the sea. Once we had finished we headed back for the ferry, where we had a blast posing as Jack and Rose from the movie Titanic, which lead us to the train trip home. We had a great time.
