Dear Parents and Caregivers,Welcome back to Term 2. Term 2 is always a busy term particularly concerning our Year 11, 12 and 13 students. Students begin to collect NCEA credits and start to understand how important it is to try their best on all assessments. We are developing an assessment calendar for senior students. The assessment calendar will identify when NCEA assessments are to be handed in, enabling our students to plan and organise an appropriate study timetable.

Just as a reminder we have Parent Teacher Interviews on Wednesday 10th July from 2.30pm until 7.00pm. This will give you an

opportunity to meet with your child’s subject teachers and discuss any issues your child may have. A full school report will be available on Friday 5th July (before Parent Teacher Interviews). During Term 3 we will have Academic Coaching Interviews. Further details on how to make bookings for both events will be published in our monthly newsletter.

Term 2 is a 10 week Term. The end of Term 2 is Friday 12th July 2013. Queen’s Birthday is on Monday 3rd June and is a public holiday therefore Dargaville High School is closed for instruction on this day.

A new era for ANZ

Life’s little secrets

Former branch managers of National Bank, Graham Jones, left, and ANZ, Rex Nathan, joined the current manager, Kelly Bryers, in opening the newly refurbished ANZ branch in Victoria Street, Dargaville. The event marked the joining of the ANZ and National bank teams after the rebranding was announced last year. “Graham and Rex are such an integral part of history of these two banks in Dargaville, so it’s wonderful they could be here as the two teams become one,” says Kelly.

Graham started at the National Bank in 1952, becoming manager in 1986 and retiring in 1993. Rex was with ANZ for 46 years, half of which he spent as branch manager. The new branch will have 13 staff including agricultural, commercial, business banking and home loan specialists.

Love and cupcakes are two of life’s necessities for the Dargaville Sewing Centre’s embroidery club. For their mother’s day themed session, they made aprons which said, “All you need is love (and cupcakes),” and Dargaville baker, Yasmin Bainbridge, supplied the group with the latter for morning tea. Owner, Marion McEwing, says it was a fun and successful day and has been running the club for around five years. She says it’s gone from strength to strength with women travelling from as far as Kerikeri to attend. Around eight sewers meet each month to learn new tricks on their Janome machines.

World championship dancer from Dargaville

‘New slate’ at Tinopai School by Sheri O’Neill

by Rose Rees-Owen

Highland dancer, Sarah de Bruin, executes a pas de basque at the InternationalChampionships in Australia, last year

Fifteen-year-old, Sarah de Bruin, is competing in the Highland Dancing World Championships in Cowal, Scotland.

“Winning would be amazing but my goal is to go through as many rounds as possible and get a placing,” says Sarah.

Competing against the world’s best dancers on August 26 will be a mental as well as a physical challenge says Sarah, but she is excited to be part of it.

“Dancing alongside defending champion Ellis Hayes from Scotland will be an amazing experience in itself.”

She qualified by coming third at the North Island championships and second at a competition in Australia as well as making the premier grade which Sarah likens to being a black belt in martial arts.

She has been dancing since she was four years old and one of her first memories was going to the Waipu Highland Games and being mesmerised by the kilts, the kicks and the leaps.

“No one could drag me away — all I wanted to do was watch the dancers all day.”

She comes from a line of highland dancers with her grandmother, Lesley Chitty (nee Fleming), winning her first New Zealand championship when she

was 12 and her mother, Kathryn, also danced until she was 13.

“When my grandmother put the music on when I was little, I knew what to do. I wanted to dance to it.”

The physical strain highland dancing takes on the body means most dancers retire at around 20 years old but after Sarah has competed as much as she can, she wants to be a dance teacher as well as a judge.

She says one of the perks is travelling and meeting new people and she often goes to Australia, has been to Canada and now Scotland which isn’t cheap.

Sarah baby sits to support her dancing but local businesses are also helping. Dargaville Ford helped her fundraise at the field days and Dargaville BNZ will also begin raising money to help Sarah get to the Cowal Highland Gathering.

She leaves New Zealand August 9 and will compete in other competitions as well as sightseeing before the big day.

“I couldn’t have done this without the support of my family and my dance teacher, Mark Forshaw, who’s been with me from day one.” ■

Tinopai School’s new principal, Sonya Kaihe, says she’s adapting well to her new roll size and change of scenery.

“Fifteen wonderful pupils and a view to die for!” she says.

Prior to her appointment, Ms Kaihe was associate principal at Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae in Mangere, which is total Maori immersion from Years One to Eight and bilingual through to Year 13. However, she is not entirely a stranger to the seaside village, which she has visited for more than 20 years through family connections with Tinopai friends.

Board of Trustees chair, Graham Withers, says the board had a very specific set of criteria for the principal position and had made their selection very carefully. “It was really important we got the right person,” he says. “We

wanted a principal who could not only provide strong management but also inspire the future direction of the school.” He says although the roll has fallen in recent years the school is still very well supported by the community, with many local people volunteering their time with waiata, reading, sport, crafts and outings.

Ms Kaihe says she has really hit the ground running, starting in the first week of the new term and hosting the Educational Review team in week two, but sees the visit as well-timed. “At the end of the day it’s an advantage to start a new position with a new slate, and whatever the ERO team brings will benefit the school.”

West coast thrillsSummertime stateside by Sheri O’Neill by Rose Rees-Owen

The west coast trail ride has become a well established and popular motocross track with the entry fee going to Te Kopuru Primary School.

Since 2006, funds raised have gone towards anything from school trips to playground equipment to laptops and principal, Lee Anderson, says it provides the extra learning experiences that aren’t budgeted for.

The 40k track crosses private farmland with expert loops as offshoots and the sand based soil makes it suitable in all weather conditions.

Around 250 trail bike riders blasted the tracks last year and Lee adds it’s great bonding time for parents and their children.

“It’s good to see Dad stay with his little ones as they challenge themselves on the tracks.”

She says most of the organising committee members are parents of former students and have chosen to stay on because they can see the benefits.

“It’s great to have the support of the community, and Dargaville Honda has been our sponsor since day one,” says Lee.

Kathy Peake is about to spend her seventh winter having summer in Pennsylvania.

Kathy is a ‘regular’ at Camp Summit, where each summer around 360 young people aged 7 to 18 with ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, Tourettes and other disabilities experience a range of outdoor pursuits and indoor activities. Kathy says the camp is structured to teach anger management and other coping strategies, providing “lots of poker chips to get them through their next year.”

Kathy, nee Vuletich, was brought up on the family farm at Turiwiri. Mother of four and now ‘Granny’ to 12, she was part way through a delayed OE seven years ago when she came across an advertisement to work at the camp. “I wasn’t finished with travelling, and it really appealed.” She had previously discovered an affinity with special needs while teaching a young gymnast who became increasingly disabled with a brain tumour, later training as a special needs teacher aide and working in the area of brain injury rehabilitation.

“Because of my farming background, I was hired as a Nature Specialist. Which is funny,

because Pennsylvania has bears, raccoons and snakes, which I knew nothing about! But this year I’m managing the ‘Specialists’ — mainly students, ostensibly at camp to teach their specialities, but really all looking for a summer romance — quite a challenge!”

Kathy hopes on her return to set up ‘time-out’ camp experiences in Kaipara for children whose siblings are challenged with illness or disability. “It’s an amazing place to bring kids who need that space. We’ve got sand dunes, surfing, lakes, horse riding, and bush camps — everything, really.”

The track opens at 9am at Red Hill Camp on May 19 with the last ride at 2.30pm. Entry fee for adults is $35 and under 16 year olds ride for $15 with refreshments available all day.

Riders from across the district can expect amazing off-road action

A new playground in Dargaville will soon be open with Selwyn Park becoming a hub for youngsters.

Kaipara farming trainees have had their successes recognised at the 2013 regional AgriAwards held recently in Whangarei.

All go at Selwyn Park

The playground, funded by the Kaipara District Council, is next to the skatepark currently under construction and near the Kauri Coast Community Swimming Pool.

Community spaces manager, Thomas Patterson, says the playground was endorsed by the Dargaville Sports Infrastructure Plan prepared by Sport Northland which recommends that Selwyn Park become a central space for youth activity.

It replaces an old playground which was deemed unsafe and beyond economic repair by an audit completed by Commercial Play Ltd last autumn.

The new playground complete with swings, slides, seesaws and jungle gym, has cost around $40,000 to build.

“The operational and capital expenditure budgets were approved through the Annual Plan and Long Term Plan process to carry out these requirements,” says Mr Patterson.

He adds the park’s great location and linkages with existing facilities make it an ideal playground to renew.

Community Engagement Manager, Barbara Ware, says the exact opening date is weather dependant as they complete the finishing touches of installing the cushion fall safety surfacing.

Carl Nelder from Mangawhai, Levi Neho, Brooke Stanaway and Tyrell Jenyns from Ruawai, Joshua Windelbourne from Te Kopuru, and Joel Topia and Tara-Jayne Nichols from Waihue made up seven of the eight Northland completers of Foundation Apprenticeships in Dairy Farming through the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation.

All AgITO trainees complete their qualifications while working full-time in the industry, many travelling long distances for classes. “The Kaipara dairying apprentices were a fabulous group this year,” says AgITO’s Sarah Searle. “The two year modern apprenticeship, the equivalent to a trade certificate, requires a lot of commitment but the payoff is major — these completers are mostly still under 21 years of age but many will now walk right into management level dairying positions.” She says she is frustrated sometimes by the lack of mainstream recognition of the validity of a farming career. “These young people are huge success stories.”

Forget me not by Rose Rees-Owen

Since Margaret Russell from Dargaville was diagnosed with Alzheimers two years ago, she and her husband, Albert, along with eight patients and their carers have benefited from the services provided by the Alzheimers Society Northland

Every Wednesday a van with the ‘Forget Me Not’ logo comes from Whangarei and collects Alzheimers patients and takes them to the Senior Citizen Hall in Awakino Road.

“This gives carers a well earned break as well as patients a change from their normal day,” says Albert.

Care assistants and volunteers provide activities which range from bowls to light exercises, to arts and crafts and music and singing.

The group often go on trips and last summer they went to Te Kopuru

and Ruawai to eat ice creams. They also toured beaches and enjoyed a fishing trip.

The service began in 2001 and the society’s manager, Kevin Salmon says the support he receives from volunteers and the community in general is a credit to those in the area.

A carer support group also meets on every third Wednesday of the month at the Community Services building, Dargaville hospital between 10am and Noon.

Fill the piggy banks for the fire brigade

Chalking it up for bards and balladeers

by Rose Rees-Owen

Branch manager, Chad Lowen, with two of last year’s dressed pigs.

BNZ Dargaville is hosting the annual ‘dress the piggy competition’ with all profits going to the local Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Branch manager, Chad Lowen, has begun selling piggy banks to businesses and organisations for $10 which they will dress up in the theme of their establishments.

He says BNZ sold around 100 pigs last year which meant $1000 went straight to who they were fundraising for, Project Promise, based in Whangarei.

He adds that this year he believes support will increase as fundraising stays in Dargaville instead of being Northland wide.

“We hear the sirens all the time and thought it would be a great cause to

support as they give so much of their time and effort to us.”

Businesses have until June 14 to fundraise as much as possible then the pigs are returned to the BNZ and public voting for ‘best dressed piggy’ begins.

Votes will cost $1 and the business with the best dressed pig as well as the pig that raised the most cash will win a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine.

The prize giving is set to be held at the Dargaville Fire Brigade on July 12 and accompanied by a trivia night along with raffles and s pot prizes.

Field days visit pays offLocal farmer Yvonne Scott won big after entering a Field Days prize draw with PGG Wrightson and Cydectin. Picked as one of ten winners across the country this month, Yvonne and her family took home a swag of top-flight DeWalt power tools courtesy of Zoetics, the people who bring Cydectin to Kiwi farmers. Zoetics key account manager Philip Hobbs was snapped handing over the prize at Dargaville’s PGG Wrightson rural store.

Margaret Bell: looking for male vocalists

Dargaville singers, instrumentalists, poets, and storytellers are being invited to perform in a regular monthly ‘blackboard concert‘.

Starting from June 6, the Dargaville Arts Association will be holding the acoustic gathering on the first Thursday evening of every month.

Association member, Allan Mortensen, says performers and audience alike are welcome. “The idea is to ‘have a go’ in a friendly, informal atmosphere or just sit back and listen and enjoy. “

He says the performers set the programme for a blackboard concert by chalking up their names at the beginning of the evening. “When your name comes up, you’re on.”

For any men out there not quite ready to perform solo but keen to sing, fellow member Margaret Bell is setting up an

all-male singing group as part of the same venture.

“Dargaville needs more blokes singing,” she says. “We will be learning and singing a range of genres — everything from rock to opera — and all voices are welcome.”

The initial venue for the gatherings is the Lifestyler premises at River Rd, Dargaville, with a pianist available, if required, for those who bring their music. Chalk-up time is 7pm for a 7.30pm start, with the evening finishing around 10pm. Entry is $2, and tea and coffee will be available for koha.

For more information phone Margaret 09 439 4403 or Allan 021 439 697.

Coping with allergies

Tradies tee off in friendly match

For Allergy Awareness Week which began on Monday, mother, Kazia Guy, from Te Kopuru is painting one finger nail to demonstrate that at least one in ten babies in New Zealand develop an allergy.

Two of her three children have severe allergies with her four year old son, Deandre, reacting to 38 allergens.

“The main ones are egg, dairy, corn, horse, cat, dog, penicillin and dust mite,” says Kazia.

While feeding the calves on their dairy farm, he had a particularly bad reaction.

“I noticed he was rubbing his eye then his entire left side of his face was swollen and lumpy with hives. He was unrecognisable.”

Kazia rushed him to hospital and describes the time as the scariest of her life.

“Everyone’s so calm around you while you’re thinking your baby’s going to die

— it feels like you’re in a bad dream.”Life got much easier for Kazia and her husband

Thomas once she took Deandre to specialist, Vincent Crump, in Auckland; a trip funded by the community.

She has since bought antimicrobial carpet and has worked out what he can and can’t eat.

Although she came to terms with Deandre’s allergies she wasn’t expecting her nine month old daughter, Bridget, to go into anaphylactic shock while feeding her apple and berry baby food.

“She went downhill quickly but came right just as fast. The specialist says we may not be so lucky next time.”

Giving her children a normal life is important and she has been working with Te Kopuru Primary School to ensure they get the correct training in order for Deandre to attend.

“Being an allergy mum is hard but there are lots of things you can do to make everyday life easier.”

The experience has made her want to be an allergy nurse and she encourages people to donate to Allergy New Zealand which provides information and support as well as researching causes, treatments and potentially cures.

Easy Clean | Durable | Looks Greatfor all new and old cow sheds

Rust Never SleepsRust Never SleepsAs the rain comes down it’s a great time to

take a look at all those maintenance tasks around the farm — not only for those who have new sharemilkers incoming, but also to repair the damage of a long hot summer and to ensure that insidious rust doesn’t eat into machinery during the ‘big wet’.

Your allies at this time of year are Western Blast and Paint, a team of professionals who really know surfacing, restoration and painting.

A big part of their service this time of year involves resurfacing dairy sheds, which have suffered chemical damage from milk and molasses spills, as well as the other tolls taken by livestock!

As well as resurfacing dairy sheds to prevent injury and aid in cleaning, Western Blast and Paint can treat all of your agricultural metal — machines, infrastructure and more — to a weatherproof, rust-free new coating before the winter. Revitalise, restore and protect your farm with a little help from the pros — call Western Blast and Paint today for a competitive quote.

Gypsy week is on its way, and across the Kaipara dairy herds are drying off for the winter season and calving.

Team Tregidga break for a strategy meeting during the recent Carters golf tournament — a fun invitational event for local tradespeople. There was a whole lot of friendly rivalry on the course as top tradies emulated the stars of the PGA tour, trading in hammers and nails for 9-irons and putters. Carters are keen supporters of local tradespeople both on and off the fairways, and this day of R and R was one way in which the building supply company could spend some quality time with the people who use their services most. At the end of the day local builder Les Sweeney’s team came out on top, but everyone was a winner with good weather and good times all round.

Water, water everywhereAll Kaipara water restrictions have now been lifted.

Kaipara District Council’s Water Services manager, Chandra Dissanayake, says recent rain has lifted the level of the Waiatua Dam and returned the Kaihu River to pre-drought flow, allowing council to remove the remaining water use restrictions for Dargaville and Baylys Beach. “Council thanks all water users for their conservation efforts and patience during the dry months.”

A great breakfast dealA full breakfast buffet featuring fruit, cereal, bacon and eggs, sausages, hash browns and mushrooms and even more trimmings, all for $15, is being held to boost funds to fight cancer.

It’s part of the Pink Ribbon cancer appeal fund, and is being held at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall, on Sunday May 26.

“The doors open at 8.45 am and we will start

serving at nine-o’clock,” said Wendy Sheppard, of CaterKing, a local business sponsoring the event, along with some enthusiastic supporters.

“We are following up the first breakfast we held

last year, and we still have tickets available. In fact, there will be an ‘early bird’ prize on the day, with people getting their tickets by May 18, going into the draw.”

This year the funds raised from the Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign around the country will go towards funding community outreach programmes to help heighten community awareness of breast cancer and provide support to improve the quality of life of people affected in New Zealand.

“We have a number of people in the area here who have experienced the trials associated with cancer, so a few of us got together and decided this is how we could help,” Wendy added.

The all-new Dargaville WOF Centre is situated just behind the BNZ bank, in the building once used by fellow auto professionals Dargaville Auto Electrical. Chief warrant inspector Brent, admin manager Alyshia and their team are up and running right now, looking after the safety of Kaipara cars two at a time to keep up with popular demand! Brent says that while the new WOF centre is all about automotive safety and security, they are not a repair or rebuild garage. Instead they focus on light repairs such as oil filters, windscreen wipers and headlamp bulbs; the little things to help folks achieve a warrantable standard.

Without the focus on major repairs, it’s their aim to be fair and honest about what the customer’s car needs in order to run safely for another six months on the Kaipara’s demanding roads.

It’s the season for farm maintenance, as dairy herds dry off and the welcome addition of some late autumn rain brings pastures back from brown to green. That means it’s time to put all the horsepower of the Kaipara’s working tractors to good use, with a range of machinery spanning the technological range from the simple to the ingenious.

Modern tractors are a far cry from their ancestors, with computerised hydraulics, advanced common rail diesel motors and the ability to fit all kinds of tools to power through agricultural chores. For pasture management, this means both the extremely heavy and simple (such as big, tough paddock rollers) and the complex (pneumatic seed drills, used to undersow maize fields and turn them back into pasture). Expect to see disc harrows and tines breaking up the soil, too, and nutrients being applied with new slurry tanker technology, affording farmers the ability to inject nutrients right down to the roots of pasture.

Options aren’t limited to the back of the tractor, either. At the front, you’ll find all the tools for winter feeding out — bale gripping ‘soft hands’ to recover feed which has been put aside for the cold weather, and even mechanised

feed-out buckets such as the 1.8 metre Propark units available through Kaipara Agri Centre. Of course when it comes to scooping and shifting silage, spikes and buckets mounted to a sturdy set of hydraulic arms make short work of the job.

Even the perennial task of fencing is made easier with tractor-driven technology — no doubt all of us have heard the hills echoing to the repeated whack of a fencing post-driver at work, removing a whole lot of arduous graft with the mallet and spade.

Tools like these have made the modern tractor a ‘swiss army knife’ among vehicles, and one which no 21st century farm can do without. That’s why, with winter on the way it’s timely to remember to service your tractor’s hydraulics and keep them pumping for the colder months, when all that extra machinery comes into play. ■

Adding practicality to tractor power by Andy Bryenton

Brent and Alyshia from the new Dargaville WOF Centre

Dargaville welcomes a new addition this week, making life a little easier for motorists.

Time to show winter mud who’s boss.Gear up with tyres for all makes and models with us!

The presentation and flair of their road cars has grown from strength to strength as well, adroitly steering clear of quickly dated fads — note the continued popularity of Kia’s Soul, and the futuristic lines of their recent Provo concept car.

That’s why the 2013 Cerato is unashamedly completely different from the car it replaces. Drivers of the previous generation Cerato were wooed by its excellent value for money, its safety credentials and its suite of handy gadgets. Fans of this latest iteration will likely be impressed simply by how it

looks — at least for starters.Long, low, and sleek, the 2013 Cerato

stands only chest high next to a ‘larger gentleman’ like myself. But questions about a low ceiling and legroom issues were banished when I took a seat — and that’s not only because the Cerato boasts the kind of memory-equipped adjustable driving furniture which is usually firmly in German territory. With the sunroof cover back the cabin feels just right, with numerous technological conveniences discreetly yet sensibly placed. Carbon fiber trim highlights a tidy dash area,

and best of all this sub-40-thousand-dollar car comes with ventilated seats for those hot northern summers.

The interior may be classically muted (black leather, a splash of carbon, garnished with chrome), but the exterior is bold, especially when parked next to the earlier Cerato. With a fastback shape, slippery creases and a low, rakish glass profile, this is no ‘family hatch’ in design. Note the trademark Kia grille, and those gloriously late-50s inspired rear light clusters, like a Harley Earl meets Syd Mead sketch. I’d prefer the headlamp cluster and the bigger, brasher wheels from the Optima, but the finished product is very sorted indeed. Heads turned as I test drove this one!

Under the hood a 2 litre direct injection engine quietly turns on the horsepower, giving the Cerato a respectable but not spine-cracking belt of pick-up, an experience sharpened by the highly recommended use of the steering system’s ‘sport’ mode. I drove

to the test in a Peugeot 306 hot hatch, one of the most balanced little cars of the 1990s, and in sport mode the Cerato felt similarly light on its feet. In ‘comfort’ mode the Cerato is smooth and well mannered for those who value a soothing ride.

So, this new Kia ticks the boxes for style (sharp, and definitely not vanilla), fuel economy (7.1L per 100k), and hassle-free cruising through town and country. But the best part about this car is the attention to small details. Chilled glove box. Those ventilated seats. And — best of all — ½ a terabyte of music storage built into the stereo, accessible via bluetooth. One can’t help but think that if Apple had designed a car to match their range of chic, ergonomic and eminently must-have gadgets (see the Cerato in white and muse on this) — this is what they would have come up with.

Oh, and remember — last time there was a coupe version, too. Looking forward to what Kia do with that! ■

Matariki at the museum

Visitors to Mangawhai may very well remember Celena’s Gifts — the gift shop with the eclectic range and quirky collection tucked in next to the Q Cafe in the seaside town’s Village centre. Well, the shop has moved, the range is bigger and the views are better from the top of the hill in Kaiwaka — and proprietress Celena is also giving her new home town a helping hand, saving the local information centre from outright closure.

“The people of Kaiwaka have been so nice and so welcoming,” says Celena. “We’ve been open a week, and they’ve been just fantastic. We are the gateway town to Northland and to the Kauri Coast here, so it was a given that we had to have an information centre here, to help tourists discover all there is to see and do in the Kaipara.”

With the district council’s offices moving to Mangawhai, Celena has incorporated vital tourist information

into a corner of her new, bigger store, and as a lifelong resident of the region she’s just the right person to help advise travellers about where to stay, what to see and where to go.

As well as information, travellers who stop by at Celena’s Gifts can expect to find a wealth of wonderful things to take home with them. The new store has afforded space for a bigger selection of artwork, treasures, souvenirs and more. There’s sure to be something to catch the eye for everyone, and, along with the new information centre it’s a win-win situation for the ‘little village of lights’.

Townsfolk have welcomed Celena’s Gifts warmly, and are full of praise for the entrepreneurial owner’s decision to keep the information centre local. There are sure to be many flow-on benefits for the rest of the Kaipara, too, as people stopping in to browse and enjoy this new store learn about the must-see sights of the Kauri Coast and beyond.

In the past it has been a season to celebrate and to prepare the ground for

the coming year’s planting. Offerings of the produce of the land were made and it was a time to instruct young people in the lore of the land and the forest. In addition, certain birds and fish were especially easy to harvest.

Today it has become a celebration of skills, achievements, history and knowledge, and The Kauri Museum has asked primary schools from the old Otamatea area — encompassing Tokatoka to Mangawhai, for a display from each school that will reflect the Matariki theme.

Displays can include traditional or modern material, including many mediums such as collage, flax weaving, poetry, and stories of other forms

These will all make up a museum exhibition over the Matariki period.

Free weaving Workshops will be also be held, with local weavers, Martha Hetaraka, and Sandy Thompson on June 10, 12, 14, 17,19 and 21 from 10am to 12 noon.

These will be open to beginners or more advanced weavers. To register, phone The Kauri Museum 09 431 7417.

The Maori New Year, Matariki, runs this year from June 10 for a month, marking the rise of the star constellation of Pleiades or the Seven Sisters.

Kaiwaka’s latest taste sensation offers up world flavours to tempt the discerning palate, alongside classic dishes which have made Indian cuisine a favourite here in New Zealand.

The newly opened Spice Lounge lives up to its name with a menu bursting with authentic flavour, and the best news is that they are situated right on state highway one — the perfect stop-off point for travellers seeking a hot, healthy lunch or dinner.

Restaurant owner Satinder Singh and his team of highly trained chefs have been steadily building a following since they opened their Kaiwaka establishment this April, but now they’re ready to introduce a new strand to their menu — lunches, as both takeaway or dine in options.

Their menu caters not just to those who enjoy their meals hot and spicy — you’ll find global flavours such as sticky ribs and succulent porterhouse steak right there next to exotic Indian dishes such as the world famous Chicken Tikka, spicy Tandoori and a Spice Lounge exclusive; Murg Kali Mirch, a delectable concoction of chicken pieces with freshly ground peppercorns

and spices served in a rich, creamy sauce.

Satinder says that his customers love being able to choose from a wide range of dishes, and especially enjoy being able to select the level of hot and spicy flavour they prefer. For those who really like to feel the burn it’s also good to know that the Spice Lounge is fully licensed — you can quench your thirst and complement your meal with crisp, cold Kingfisher beer or a selection of house wines.

With a cozy atmosphere and commanding views from Kaiwaka’s hilltop, the Spice Lounge is sure to become a firm favourite with locals and travellers alike. Book in for a meal, or stop by for lunch when you’re passing through the Kaipara’s ‘village of lights’ and treat your senses to a taste of exotic artistry.

Satinder and his team welcome you to Kaiwaka’s newest eatery — serving up authentic Indian flavours

Letters to the Editor

Serious questions surround legal actionDear EditorIn the May 7th edition of the Kaipara

Lifestyler you ran a story by Sheri O’Neill called Bill Paves Way for Legal Action.

At the end of the editorial there was a small piece about the response of the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association Chairman, Bruce Rogan.

They believed the bill was ‘rushed’ ‘ad-hoc’ and incomplete.

I’ll apologise now for being so ignorant but Mr Rogan, where was the MRRA while all of this was happening?

It states in the piece that all of this started in 2006. How is it going to improve things by adding more cost to the ratepayers of the Kaipara by taking legal action against those that are trying to rectify the situation.

It seems to me that you the MRRA

have closed the gate after the horse has bolted and you are now refusing to open the gate when somebody is trying to put the Bl***y thing back.

Why can’t the commissioners be given a chance to find a solution or is it that you have inside information on the independent report yet to be released by the Auditor General?

Are you sure that it is not you and yours, the MRRA, that’s not going off half-cocked, rushing and incomplete?

I really hope that in fighting this action that you have initiated, the council’s lawyers will also apply to the court for costs payable by MRRA.

Wayne RyderDargaville

Commissioners’ appointment step in right directionDear SirThe letter ‘Looking Forward’ signed by

Rod and Maureen Sudlow, has moved me to reply.

There has been much comment on this issue over the last few months and many will no doubt believe enough has been said and that matters should be left to run their course. However, many people living in the Mangawhai area believe that the true cause of this debacle has not been addressed.

The appointment of the Commissioners to run the Kaipara District Council is a step in the right direction. The previous council were clearly incapable. However, even with the commissioners at the helm a fundamental causation of the present mess has not been addressed. That is the illegal striking of rates to fund the

waste water scheme, and the illegal expansion of the scheme (without proper consultation) has not yet been given an adequate examination or gone through due process of law. No culpability has been established. Surely office holders who are elected to carry out the function of council on behalf of the public are accountable in law for their actions?

It is simply not good enough for the people to be expected to pick up the tab. Those citizens of Mangawhai who are on rates strike and many who are sympathetic to the argument say we will not pay on a matter of principle. This is why the question is now before the courts.

Patrick MillerMangawhai
