CHOSON BEREISHIS

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Rabbi Yisroel Strauss will be our Choson Bereishis of Simchas Torah 5779. We wish Rabbi and Mrs. Strauss and their entire family heartiest Mazel Tov.

THREE WEEKS

The Kehilla, and Klal Yisroel, once again unfortunately experienced the days of 17 Tamuz through 9 Av (Nidche) as the Bein HaMetzorim, as opposed to the Moadim Tovim which we await.

The somber mood of the Three Weeks was perceptible in the davening, through the melodies of Birkas Yerusholayim, the ends of Brochos, HaShem Elokei Yisroel, Shomer Yisroel, Keil Erech Apayim and, on Shabbosos, in Lecho Dodi. Likewise, Rav Mantel devoted the daily Divrei Halocho following Shacharis to timely laws.

On Monday, July 16 / 4 Av, Rav Mantel spoke on Inyanei Tisha B’Av. The Rav focused on one idea behind .מועד s being called a’תשעה באב

The following evening, Tuesday July 17 / 5 Av, the Kehilla showed this year’s installment of the Yizkereim video series. The videos, which present both documentary information and interviews with Holocaust survivors, seek to present a Torah-true perspective of the Churban HoAcharon, a part of the tragic Golus experience which must never be forgotten.

TISHA B’AV

Tisha B’Av was observed in somber fashion, in Moller Hall. Chazon Lasdun davened Maariv and Mr. Michael Gutmann led the Tzibbur in the reading of Megillas Eicho on Leil Tisha B’Av. Rav Mantel recited the special Kinno composed by Rav Schwab. Written at Rav Breuer’s request, this Kinno commemorates the Kedoshim of the Churban HoAcharon, the Holocaust, and has not only become a part of our Kehilla’s Tisha B’Av service, but that of many other communities as well.

Chazon Ezra Hes led the davening of Tisha B’Av morning, and Chazon Lasdun joined him in the saying of Kinnos. In the afternoon, our Kehilla hosted the local presentation of the annual Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation video. Our thanks go to Rabbi and Mrs. Raphael and Julia Weis for organizing this most appropriate event in our Kehilla, as well as to Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman and Mr. and Mrs. Yosef and Sari Levi for arranging the showing of the CCHF’s children’s video presentation, earlier in the afternoon.

CHODESH ELUL

For Kehillla members, and all who daven in our Beis HaKnesses, the approach of the Yomim Noroim has been felt in increasingly perceptible ways, beginning from Shabbos Nachamu, with the insertion of the appropriate melodies at the end of the Friday night Kaddish, and the entire concluding Shabbos Musof Kaddish. Lefonnov Naavod was added as well on Friday nights during Elul. Likewise, for the morning Divrei Halocho, Rav Mantel has continued learning the Orchos Chaim from where he had left off last year. The Rav

will IYH deliver his annual Yomim Noroim lecture to the Sisterhood on Wednesday evening, August 29/ 18 Elul. Thanks go to Mr. Ben Ettlinger, Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman, Mr. Jacob Lowenthal, Mr. Gavriel Strauss and Rabbi Yisroel Strauss who provide the Kehilla with a twice-daily “wake up call”, by their Shofar blowing.

DAF YOMI SIYUM MESECHES ZEVACHIM

The Kehilla’s Daf Yomi Chaburos celebrated their having completed Meseches Zevochim with a siyum which took place on Sunday morning, Rosh Chodesh Elul, August 12th. Rabbi Dr. Johny Hellmann was mesayeim. Rabbi Elchonon Stern addressed those present, and made note of the loss of Rabbi Yoseph Lasdun ז''ל, a long-time and integral member of the Chabura, a Talmid Chochom who was always willing and able to say the daf.

“COOL THE SHUL” CAMPAIGN

Although our goal has not yet been reached, the response to the Kehilla’s Cool the Shul Campaign has been gratifying, as members and friends—both near and far—contributed generously. The old compressors on the roof were removed with a crane and the new units were lifted up onto the roof and installed.

Due to the lack of functioning air-conditioning, most Tefillos—both Shabbosos and weekdays—this summer were held in Moller Hall. If all goes according to plan, we look very forward to returning to our Beis Knesses in time for the Yomim Noroim.

RABBI KASRIEL KAUFMAN ז''ל

It was with feelings of great sadness and loss that the Kehilla and Yeshiva received the news of the petiro of Rabbi Kasriel B. Kaufman ז''ל, beloved and long-time Rebbi, teacher, and Assistant Principal of Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch.

Scarcely a Talmid or Talmida who went through our Yeshiva in a span of some sixty-three years, was not affected by Rabbi Kaufman, through his various roles of rebbi, teacher and assistant principal (as well as his tenure in Camp Ahavah) and, above all, someone to whom one could go with any problem, and be guaranteed a sympathetic, wise, and listening ear.

Rabbi Kaufman had the zechus to work closely with our previous Rabbonim—Rav Breuer, Rav Schwab and Rav Gelley—and was also a very close Talmid of the great Roshei Yeshiva Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky and Rav Gedalya Schorr. His quiet acts of Chessed and tremendous care helped and in some cases literally saved Talmidim.

SENIOR SOCIAL CLUB

Those arriving for the Senior Social Clubs’ supper and slides on Sunday evening, August 19th, found the rear half of Moller Hall beautifully set up in a summery palette of lavender tablecloths and pastels. Since the topic of the evening was Chazonus, it was not at all inappropriate that the front of Moller Hall was serving in its summer daily role as our Mokom Tefilla. In fact, hose who arrived early could daven Mincha-Maariv on site.

Some fifty people enjoyed the fresh rye bread cold-cut sandwiches, coleslaw, and macaroni salad, as well as fresh cut fruit and cookies, all the while listening to a fascinating lecture by veteran Chazonus expert Mr. Charles Bernhaut. A technical glitch required Mr. Bernhaut to change his lecture topic from the life and works of Reb Yossele Rosenblatt to a general review of Chazonus. We were privy to the beautiful sound of various Chazonim through the ages, via the available recording.

Everyone left satiated and enchanted. As usual Mrs. Molly Resnick did a great job of producing a very enjoyable and harmonious evening.

NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER

It has been a very busy summer at Moriah Senior Center. Along with our regular exercise classes such as Pilates, fit ‘n fun and yoga, the Center offered two evidence-based fitness programs – programs that are clinically proven to have a positive impact on health. Walk with Ease was our summer walking program and Tai Chi for Arthritis brought several new members into our ranks.

Our annual Patriot’s Party was held in the end of June in deference to the three weeks. Patriotic spirit abounded as attendees arrived decked out in their red, white and blue finery. Live music by Cantor Eric S. Freeman had many commenting on how much they loved hearing such an extensive selection of “oldies”. Everyone in attendance received a timely bottle of sunscreen and patriotic themed candy.

Dr. Paul Breuer, everyone’s favorite eye doctor, held a three-part Senior Eye Health seminar in July. Topics included: “Your Eyes and the Miracle of Vision”, “The Most Common Eye Diseases” and “Save Your Precious Eyes – Sight-Preventive Eye Care”.

Color coach Betsy Karp presented a seminar illustrating how color can shift your energy, your mood and lift your spirit within seconds. In this workshop attendees learned the properties of colors and how they relate to your emotions. Everyone walked away with a new understanding on how to incorporate color into their everyday lives.

Tucked inconspicuously along the outskirts of Van Cortlandt Park sits the Arthur Ross Citywide Nursery, an organic farm that is a model of sustainability. Not generally open to the public, the nursery supplies New York City parks with much of their living landscaping needs. The Director himself, Richard Cabo, gave Moriah seniors an exclusive tour and regaled them with fascinating feats of plant propagation and horticultural heroism. Citywide was also the home of the iconic “9/11 Survivor Tree”, as it was meticulously nursed back to health. The nursery now features three full-size clones, which were grown from six inch cuttings taken from the survivor tree prior to its return to Ground Zero and installation at the 9/11 Memorial. The seniors even came away with a suggested reading list – Jane Goodall’s Seeds of Hope, which examines the critical role that trees and plants play in our world and features Citywide in its pages as well.

Moriah’s 7th Annual Health Fair took place in July and featured several important diagnostics including glaucoma, depression and blood pressure screenings, as well as some lovely free gifts from thirteen different vendors.

Virtual tour guide Martin Schneit returned to the Center for another walk down memory lane. In his multimedia presentation, Marty highlighted New York during World War II to rave reviews. Everyone left on an emotional high, filled with nostalgia.

Enthusiastic praise followed our summertime Paint Party. Fine artist Nechama (Cohnen) Markowitz and Ahuva (Cohnen) Berkowitz, both alumnae of our Yeshiva, from Paint with Nechama, walked the seniors through step by step instructions for the creation of a complete painting of a cherry blossom tree. So much laughter and fun filled the hall as the seniors were amazed by their own talent. Everyone agreed that Moriah must hold another paint party in the future!
