    Te 1920s was a unique decade. World War I had

    just ended and the young soldiers were coming hometo a country that had changeddrastically since their departure much like they themselveschanged. Many of these youngmen felt lost, hopeless andwanted a change of scenery.Hence the appers, mobsters,music, drinking, partying anddoing what you want attitudethat characterized this era. Tis

    new attitude and lifestyle creptits way into the literature of thisera as Gertrude Stein called it,the authors of this time are a lostgeneration. Trough this unit, my hopeis that students will not onlypractice their skills as strategicreaders but that they will alsoexpand their understandingand knowledge of the 1920s.Te characteristics of the LostGeneration and the 1920s overall have resonatedthroughout the years with every coming generation.Trough this unit, students will examine howthese characteristics or themes have permeatedinto their own generation and our current society.Understanding what happened in the 1920s will help

    students conceptualize their understanding of their

    own world. As a culmination to the unitstudents will create a project thatdemonstrates their understandingof the 20s and the lost generationby comparing or contrasting thecharacteristics and themes of the20s to modern life. I think thatby giving students the optionfor the format of this projectwill promote deeper thinking

    and more creativity.Tey areexpressing their opinion in thisproject and they only knowthe best way to present thatinformation.

    I believe this unit will keep mystudents interest piqued. I, myselfhave always been fascinatedwith the 1920s because of theuniqueness of the time period. Iknow that not all people share myopinion so I think it will help my

    students to think about and compare it to their ownlives. Also, understanding the importance, signicanceand impact of history is key to understanding ourpresent and our future what better way to do thatthen through some classic literature, some poetry, amovie and a creative nal project?
