Kalori Term 3 - Week 2 21 July 2021 Respect, Honesty, Responsibility – RHR – That’s Who We Are Meryula St Narromine NSW 2821 P: 02 68894566 F: 02 68894451 E: [email protected] Denise Toohey – Principal Welcome Back Welcome back to Term 3. Unfortunately, we have once again been plunged into COVID restrictions. With regard to the restrictions our school is currently at level two. A table explanation of the restrictions from the Department of Education, based on NSW Health advice, is included in this Kalori. The main points to remember are that parents/carers are not allowed to enter the school site for general access, canteen ordering, assemblies or to pick up/drop off students. There are exceptions for picking up sick students, making payments to the office or meeting with school staff, by agreement. Any adults coming onto the school site to the school office must wear a mask or face covering and must sign in/out using the QR code. Pick Up/ Drop Off School staff are allocated to morning and afternoon gate duties and we ask that you please respect any request not to enter the school grounds. Staff are commencing work early to endeavour to have the gates open by 8.20. The Kiss and Drop Zone has been working very well and we are thankful to the parents who regularly use this service. The canteen gate is open for families who would like to park and walk the children to the gate.

Denise Toohey – Principal Welcome Back Welcome back to Term 3. There are

exceptions for picking up sick students, making payments to the office or meeting with school staff, by agreement.

Excursions At this point in time we are unable to have overnight camps or excursions and all day trips must be within the local government area. To support this restriction the Stage 3 excursion to Canberra has been postponed to Term 4 Week 9 (30 Nov-3 Dec). Challenge Camp is on hold until further notice. To provide an outdoor learning opportunity we have organised a day outing for Stage 3 to Mungery on Thursday (boys) and Friday (girls). We are yet to make a decision on Year 4’s excursion to the Warrumbungles in Week 10 but will communicate information regarding this as soon as we are able. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these changing restrictions. Education Week Education Week 2021 is set for 26-30 July. Again with restrictions in place we are unable to have parents or community members onsite. The students and staff are currently brainstorming how we can share our wonderful learning environment with you remotely. Once we finalise how this will work the information will be shared via our Facebook, website, notes and newsletters. The 2021 Showcase Assembly that features our celebration of success at the Dubbo Eisteddfod will proceed on Tuesday 27 July outside under the Canteen COLA. Children will be seated on the open quad and will definitely need to wear warm clothes on this day. We will endeavour to share the highlights of this with our community. Assemblies NPS will continue to host our general assemblies without singing or dancing in the hall, class items will be recorded outside and viewed by the students as part of the proceedings. Please continue to recognise our award winners as they will be listed in Kalori. Sport At this stage the 2021 Athletics Carnival will proceed with a modified program. Students have completed the field events through their athletics rotations last term and place getters have been identified, with only the track events to be completed. On Wednesday 28 July, parents and carers are welcome to attend our track carnival commencing at 9am and concluding at approximately 12pm at Peyten Park. The public (parents, carers, family members and friends) must remain outside the fenced area while students will remain inside the bike track. There will be no canteen on offer. Parents will not be able to collect children from the oval. It is expected that parents/carers will be respectful of these restrictions as we are extremely fortunate to be able to offer this rare opportunity for families at this point in time. Transition Programs Both our High School Transition and Kindergarten 2022 Transition will continue to operate under the current level two restrictions. For Year 6 the Narromine High School taster lessons are on the following Wednesdays from 1.45-2.45: Week 2 - Agriculture and Maths Week 5 - Cooking and Science Week 8 - Wood and Art NPS 2021 Kindergarten Transition will continue as normal with weekly transition days for individual students. Health and Well-being In line with department recommendations students should not attend school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms will be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test. Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms is strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received. Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test will not be permitted to return to school for a 10-day period. Additionally, they must be symptom-free for at least 3 days prior to returning to school.

Health and Well-being continued Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition. If the student develops new or changed symptoms, they should get tested for COVID-19. COVID-19 testing for students with complex health or disability may be challenging. In these situations, schools will ask the parent or carer to have their child assessed by their medical practitioner. Where a medical practitioner determines that a COVID-19 test is not required, documentation must be provided to the school to confirm that the student does not have symptoms that warrant a COVID-19 test. The certificate must also indicate that the student is able to return to school. Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) It is great to see that so many of our students are taking part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge! K-2 students are required to read 25 PRC books and 5 personal choice books to complete the challenge while the Year 3-6 students are required to read 15 PRC books and 5 personal choice books. There is a great selection of PRC books available in our library as well as our classrooms. Students can access the PRC website by logging into their student portal and log books against their name. Alternatively students can return their PRC Reading Log and the librarians can assist in entering the books for you. Books that are read to the class will be added to each students log as they are finished. - Monique Ferguson School Breakfast 4 Health We are continuing our School Breakfast 4 Health Program in Term 3. One day per week, Foodbank provides all students with a nutritious breakfast. Students are still encouraged to have breakfast at home and partake in a small meal at school, with the main focus being on developing the students’ talking and listening skills. Each week students have been encouraged to talk about a topic with their peers. Each topic provides opportunities to develop a variety of skills. During these conversations, the teachers and support staff actively encourage appropriate skills such as use of eye contact, use of tone when telling an interesting story and inflection when asking a question. The program also offers opportunities for students to develop a rich and broad vocabulary which can support writing and reading development. The topics which the students will be encouraged to talk about during the School Breakfast 4 Health Program are listed. You may like to talk about these topics at home whilst sharing a meal together. Sport Sports rotations are now finished and results from the field events are processed. Students who qualified for Gobondery/NARRAF for these events will be notified in due course. The track events for the Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday 28 July at Peyten Park. With current COVID restrictions in place only students in Year 3-6 and eligible Year 2 students who turn 8 in 2021 will attend. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours on the day. At this stage parents and carers are able to attend however must comply with COVID restrictions. Anyone attending the carnival to spectate must remain outside the fenced area while students will remain inside the bike track. There will be no canteen on offer. Parents/carers will not be able to collect children from the oval. Thank you for your support with these restrictions. Emma Squires - Sport Coordinator
