PRINCIPAL‟S REPORT Welcome Back to Term 3 Staff and students have returned to Term 3 with a great deal of enthusiasm. All teaching and non teaching staff were involved in the inaugural combined schools of the Dapto Learning Community, Professional Learning Day on Monday. Non teaching staff from the seven public education Dapto schools met at Kanahooka High, while 250 teaching staff from the schools met at Dapto High School. It was a wonderful opportunity to share and learn from each other in an effort to improve the learning experience for all students attending public schools in Dapto. Students returned to school on Tuesday and looked resplendent in their uniforms. They quickly settled into their learning, after being issued with revised timetables for Semester 2. Student attendance will be closely monitored this term and parents are asked to provide letters of explanation quickly, following a legitimate student absence from school. Student attendance is seen as a crucial ingredient for improvement in learning to occur and your assistance is of equal importance. Kanahooka Students Shine “On behalf of the students and teachers that participated in the Dapto District Stage 2 Touch Football Gala Day at Lakelands Oval on Friday 24 June, I would like to thank the following students Jay Fancourt, David Forno, Danny Davis, Michael Coote, Benjamin Smith and Tyron Azzopardi. All these students did an outstanding job of not only refereeing, but also coaching and assisting children that were new to the game. They also developed a very good rapport with the younger students. Their efforts contributed to the success of the Gala Day and there were many positive comments from both parents and teachers.” David Dark Dapto Public School Priority Schools Program Kanahooka High School has been fortunate to qualify for additional staffing and funding over the past seven years from this program and will be seeking continued placement on the program for 2013-2016. Mr Peter K Jones Year 10 Interview Day During the last week of Term 2, 29 of June, the Year 10 students had their mock interview day. We prepared for our interview in our English and Career classes where we put together a resume, cover letter and skills sheet tailored towards a specific job we chose. We all had to dress in formal business wear and turn up 15 minutes before our interview, everyone looked very clean and smart. Employers from a range of different industries around the Illawarra came in to conduct the interviews. We were marked on such things as our experience, our appearance, posture, politeness, eye contact, speech, grammar, communication, self confidence, job knowledge, company knowledge and skills/aptitude. Overall the day was a success and has helped us gain the skills needed to go into an interview confident and come out with the job. YEAR 11 LAPTOP UPGRADES The Digital Education Revolution (DER) Program will be conducting an upgrade on the Lenovo S10e laptops supplied to Year 11 students, for the purposes of completing a number of tasks that include:

• Upgrading hinges for the S10e

• Replacing the hinge caps for the S10e

• Replacing the LCD screen cover for the S10e

• Replace the bottom cover of the S10e to remediate

battery rail faults

The DER Program is working closely with Lenovo and their sub-contractor IMI to complete this upgrade on the school premises during school hours starting in Term 3. Technicians will arrive at school on 2 August 2011.

In addition to the work being conducted by IMI, the TSO will complete the following tasks:

• SOE S3 refresh (inclusive of the BIOS Upgrade)

• Annual stock take of devices and

• Identification and repair of secondary faults (existing or

new)

Students are asked to hand in their laptops to the TSO office before 2 August 2011. As the laptops will be reimaged and all data (homework) will be erased during the format process, it is therefore necessary for students

to backup their data to an external device for future use.

We also recommend you backup all files stored on

MyLocker due to it being deleted during the refresh.

Please label your laptop with student‟s name and roll class.

The technician will undertake the various upgrades and repairs and it is therefore important that students return their laptop prior to 26 July 2011.

The laptops will be returned to students as soon as they are completed and that will include any extra repairs identified during the stock take phase.

WOW – Kanahooka NAIDOC Week 2011 was MASSIVE

The week started with a gathering of over 80 students, community members and elders joining together for our annual „Yarn Time‟. The day was a raging success

with meaningful discussions around Aboriginal identity and a sharing of stories of the past and hopes for the future. Elder, Aunty Di wrote a thankyou card to the school congratulating students and staff on their efforts and expressed her thanks for the day.

Tuesday was the highly successful K-Factor and creation of the Sea of Hands for Reconciliation! After lunch all students and staff took a hand and placed it in the ground at the rear of the school as a sign of solidarity and support for reconciliation and NAIDOC.

On Tuesday night the talented students of Kanahooka High and a couple of students from Dapto High, strutted their stuff on the awesome stage and raised the roof. This may very well be an annual event on the NAIDOC calendar with students from all backgrounds and tastes in music joining together to show the staff and parents who has „The K-Factor‟. Big

congratulations to Cyrus Villanueva for taking out 1st place with his moving rendition of Hello, Tyler Kelly 2nd and Yasmeen Sykes in 3rd place and showing us all true K-Factor.

Our final official event on the NAIDOC calendar was the combined schools Mixed Touch Footy Knockout held here at Kanahooka. 14 teams competed for the coveted prize of

the best Indigenous touch team 2011. It was an amazing effort by all teams with Kanahooka High taking out the shield for 2011.

A big thank you must go out to our major sponsors and supporters of NAIDOC week – The wonderful volunteers of Lions Club Dapto, The Dragons, Careways, NSW Police, our volunteer referees, NSW Sport & Recreation, Coca Cola Amatel, Jamie McGava of Event Draping and Bakers Delight. As ever the staff and students must be congratulated for

their efforts and contribution to making NAIDOC week.

Thank you all ... Jos
