  • Year 7 Visual Arts Year 7 have been working on tribal masks this term. They have researched different cultures which use masks either in rituals or as part of their celebrations. Our students designed a mask which was then decorated and made from clay, which was then fired in a kiln and painted.

Year 7 Language This term 7N have been looking at the different ways special occasions are celebrated in Spain

and South American countries. Some of our students were fascinated by the "Day of the Dead" which is celebrated on 1-2 November in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Another student looked at Easter in

Spain and the "Cascarones" which are hollow egg shells filled with confetti and highly decorated. These are then smashed on peoples heads, spreading the confetti all over them. This is said to bring good luck for the rest of the year. Wedding customs were also a popular celebration. Students made objects to show the rest of the class how these customs differ from our own.

First Aid Kanahooka High is running a First Aid course for interested students later this term. The cost is $70. Students are required to complete a workbook at home and then follow up with a one day course on Monday 16 December. Please see Ms Phelan for details.

Year 9 Photography On 12 November, both Year 9 Photography classes

showcased their work in the school library. A body of work from an excursion taken earlier is on exhibition.

Students have worked hard over the last few weeks in the darkroom to complete their master pieces. Students experimented with solarisation, negative printing, B&W developing as well as hand colouring. The exhibition can be viewed until 22 November.

  • DisabilityMini‐OlympicsLast Thursday 20 students from Kanahooka High volunteered at the Disability Mini-Olympics at Beaton Park. They did a wonderful job assisting people with a disability to compete in events and have a great day. Feedback from one of the organisers was glowing

for Kanahooka High students. "I just wanted to say thank you to both you and all your students that volunteered at yesterday’s Mini Olympics! I really appreciate the effort you went through to get such a large group of students to attend. They were all a credit to you and to your school. Their maturity, enthusiasm and caring natures shone throughout the day, and I really hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did." Rebecca Whitford, Student Placement Co-ordinator, NSW, ProjectAble All students had a great day. The experience helped some students confirm their interest in a career in Disability work. Getting involved in extra-curricular activities is a great way to sort through your career ideas. A huge thank you to Briannan Belt, Alicia Charles, Sarenna Forno, Jake Gates, Emma Harriman, Kaitlyn Kelly, Haddasah Kerr, James Kirkland, Rianna Le,

Nadija Magri-Barden, Tennaya Maxton, Ashley Parkinson, Elizabeth Rodger, Yemaya Roughley-Hutchison, Ashley Salisbury, Jaidyn Siddle, Logan Stoker, Kristie Tancevski and Jessica Worthington. Well done to these students!

EngineeringCareersDayHayden Loveday, Noah Zederic, James Kearton, Brandon Bardsley and Tyler Kelly recently enjoyed an Engineering Careers Day. They experienced hands-on activities, demonstrations, careers expo and employer talks. The day was interesting and inspiring. The most important message from employers and young engineers was to get involved! Doing extra-curricular actives at school or outside of school is the key to success in later life. They stressed the importance of hobbies, volunteering, school projects, part-time work and team sports in developing skills for success, both at school and in the workplace. See Ms Phelan for ideas of what extra things you could do to help your career.

Ms Phelan - Careers Adviser and VET/TVET Co-ordinator IN2UNIExperienceDayOn Tuesday 5 November a group of Year 9 and 10 students attended an IN2UNI Experience Day at Wollongong University. We commenced with orientation followed by recess and were then divided into our chosen faculties. Victoria, Maya and I went with our guide to the Law Faculty. We first listened to a guest speaker about gaining entrance into Law and then it was on to the fun part! We attempted to become jurors on a case called “Red Riding Hood vs. The Big Bad Wolf”. The Wolf won the case unanimously after convincing us that Red Riding Hood had slandered his “bad” reputation by posting an inappropriate picture of him on Facebook! Our guide was most impressed by our school blazers! Thank you to Mrs Nyman for accompanying us. We all had a great day! Tarryn Billington 9K
