We catch the song at the crescendo. Bursting out……..

From close midshot of singer‘s chest and hand the camera pulls back in a wild arc and shows us….

TRISHA, 32, singing with gay abandon….the song is of desire…

DESIRE RULES THE CITY….

With quick but fluid movements the camera runs across the pub…smoke filled…staRk blue lasers…cutting thru smog….vapid and happy faces..impersonal but lustfilled eyes….

Behind the singers…a cutout of Kolkata skyline with sparkling lights dominate the wall…

Smoke rises…..lasers cut the city….

Quick intercut of real city shots in night…..streak of car lights…..

Trish’s eyes….laughter…energy….

SONG SEQUENCE KEEPS JUMPING CUTS TO

1B. EXT. DAY. NORTH CALCUTTA BAZAR

1. Top shot. A small middle class bazaar..people going Kanchanbaboo is only a part of the shot..one amongst many

2. A Vegetable stall….(KB POV)a wicker basket with a few sad looking vegetables inside. Foreground has delicious tomatoes, capsicum etc….a tomato is picked up…felt lovingly….Vendor looks to screen…

Vendor1 : baish taka (check the price)

The hand drops the tomato…basket is lifted and taken away…

3. Another vegetable stall…..(KB POV) a full wicker basket is now snatched by the vendor (female) and turned over…

KB : Hobe na??

We see the fish vendor now..looking at KB…KB has a panful of small fish in hand….another vendor from the side is also interested in the dialogue and keeps an eye as he does business….

VENDOR 5 : ei pashei khal ache..nijei neme kota mach dhore nin na kaku…. apnar mach khaoao hobe…amrao bnachbo…

VENDOR 6 : (as he does his own business, not even looks) heh heh heh heh

CU of Kanchanbaboo…..he blinks…We study his face….

[OPTIONAL startsSLAP!!!! A huge slap descends on the fish vendors face…he cringes…..we see KB raising another huge blow…

He was only thinking…..the cringing face dissolves to that insolent laugh….heh heh heh hehOPTIONAL ends]

KB : (shouts with hopeless rage against his powerlessness) DHYAT !!!!!

Dissolves to black as the laughter of the Fish Vendors rise above the dying strains of Trisha’s song…..

2A. EXT. DAY. CALCUTA ROAD – Outside & Inside Mudi Shop

1. Morning street. North Calcutta Neighbourhood. Busy street. We catch Kanchanbaboo in the crowd walking down with bajar.

2. Kanchanbaboo walking by, from the pavement side……we see the busy road beside him….

3. Kanchanbaboo from the road side, as he walks past a Mudi Shop suddenly we see SRIHARI,47, the local grocer, coming alive

4. From inside Mudi shop….KB walks by….Srihari is alerted…he wriggles to be free and comes out…

5. Road. Srihari on the pavement…shouting…from KB’s back

SRIHARI : aw kanchanbaboo…. masher to kuri tarikh hoye gelo…..takato pathalen na……

KB : (walks away, mutters )hobe…hobe….

We see KB’s face….he blinks to swallow another humiliation…at the background SRIHARI stands watching him…

SRIHARI : jotto sob…

Kachan Baboo takes a turn to his home and stops….his face falls…

KB : Bojho….

2B. EXT. DAY. Outside KB’s House

A few person’s outside Kanchanbaboo’s house…..looking at KB….

The people are around him and Kanchanbaboo is trying to find a way throough them to the door…the going is not easy…

3B. INT. DAY. INSIDE OLD HOUSE. BEDROOM / KITCHEN

KB finishing puja in the bedroom…showing joystics to pictures of various gods and goddesses in the little alcove in the wall….shouts…

KB : koi go .. deri hoye gelo to…..

MALINSA is in kitchen…..she keeps aside a place to sit and eat on the floor and rises with a cup of tea…she enters the bedroom and hands over the cup to KB

1. A white dressed TEABOY moves away from frame. Revealing ADHIKARY, 50 at the corner table.He sees KB go in…consults his watch…shakes his head disgustedly…

2. KB reaches desk….he looks around….the office is quiet…people are very still….he looks at AJOY

3. AJOY looks at KB….from his chair….gestures…KB looks around…beckons him…

4. TEABOY slams down a cup at KB’s table…

TEABOY : (smiles)aytokkhaney alen…koto ki hoyya gyalo…

AJOY : (comes and stands near KB). Ja ja.. toke beshi matha ghamate hobe na…koto ki hoyya gyalo….(TEABOY moves away)…

KB : Ki hoyeche …sobai chupchap dekhci…

KB : (shocked) Anyaaaa…. Bolo ki go??

KB : (gulps).. kare kare dekeche??…

5. At one corner Rabin is holding court.. gesticulating…the others look and nod…

6. AJOY : ekhon Sridharbabu bhetore…..apni adhikarybabu ke ekbar jigesh kore asben..list-e kar kar nam ache…

KB : Ami jabo?...



AJOY : nischoy….. apni ekjon senior clerk…. ekta respect ache to…

7. Adhikary’s Desk….he is shouting…KB standing with an embarrassed look…

ADHIKARY : Jan nijer kaj korun…deri kore esechen abar boro boro kotha…. List??!!!..kisher list?? Osob kichu ami jani na. jan nijer jaigai giye boshun….

KB blinks

8. SRIDHAR enter office hall ……camera follows Sridhar….all eyes are on him as he walks to his desk and sits.,..eyes staring ahead…..Reaction of office….KB keeps staring at SRIDHAR

9. SILENCE……..then SRIDHAR violently breaks down crying……he puts his head on table and cries….Office is stunned……looking at SRIDHAR…..

6. INT. DAY. OFFICE CONFERENCE ROOM

A long table like an interview table at one end…..facing it…. and some distance away from the table is a solitary chair….

On the panel..siting at the middle is SENGUPTA,52, the BOSS. Flanked by ACCOUNTS, HR, LEGAL, GM, BIFR (Board of Financial Reconstruction). A beautiful SECY, 32, is siting at the other wall… giving coy glances to SENGUPTA and nodding… The others are petrified of SENGUPTA, only BIFR, the Bank Guy is bored and eating or sipping coffee with loud sounds.

Bearer RAMNIWAS is serving tea on costly china from a sideboard behind the table…..

As we open the scene….. HR is reading the dossier



HR : Kanchan Majumdar ..chappanno bochor boyesh….dosh bochor dhore senior clerk, tar age kuri bochor clerk cum typist cum assistant….deri kore opise ashe…. 2. KB sitting on chair. Looks at everybody.Tries to smile..they give bored looks

SENGUPTA looks at HR….

SENGUPTA : taratari korun…..(leans back..closes eyes)

HR : Sunun Kanchanbaboo..company thik koreche je apnake VRS deoa hobe……

KB looks…stricken….looks from face to face…

KB : VRS….

KB folds hands with a shock…..he has tears in his eyes…

Ramniwas keeps giving out coffee……they look thru other files…..LEGAL shows something in a file to GM…GM laughs….whispers back to LEGAL…..SENGUPTA leans to hear what they are saying…he smiles and nods…..

ACCOUNTS : (checks KB’s file and looks up) shunun….sat lakh taka bad apni paben tin hajar satso chollis taka…..barite pouche jabe…opise ashar dorkar nei….

KB : tin hajar taka……..!!!! ekebare more jabo….bou meye na khete peye mara jabe sir..

SENGUPTA : (to HR) call the next guy ..(to KB) apnar shomoyer dam nei ta amra jani…kintu amader shomoyer dam ache….company-r ki decision apni sune niyechen..now go back to your seat…..Ramniwas….

KB : doya korun sir….. amra bheshe jabe sir…..meyeta rastai giye dnarabe sir….sorbonash hoye jabe sir….. apander paye porchi sir…

(he rises from seat…..starts coming to the panel)

RAMNIWAS puts the coffee cup down and looks at KB

7. INT. DAY. KB’s OFFICE

1. KB’s chair. Kanchanbaboo comes and sits with a thud. SP to AJOY. His reaction. Kanchanbaboo is trying to think…his mind is blank……(is RAmniwas escorting him?)

2. Some people around SRIDHAR..trying to console..they look at KB. Bearer comes and stands before them..asks one to come

3. TEABOY gives tea to table..looks back at KB4. AJOY comes….

Ajoy : (whispers) VRS diye dile..amar nam ache kina kichu bollo? KB looks at him…blank

5. ADHIKARY looks up……KanchanBaboo is walking towards his desk……KB comes near…ADHIKARY makes a face and raises his hand to protect himself as if Kanchanbaboo is coming to hit him…

8. INT. DAY. RATAN TALUKDAR’s HOUSE

1. A cupful of green chopped parsleys is added to the frying pan…..a strirer stirs that… then adds a few other exotic looking items…..RATAN TALUKDER is trying out a new dish ….reading intently from afat cookbook he looks to the side…

RATAN : brandy-ta egiye de….hnya hnya… oi knacher batite….

Angle opens to show the open kitchen and a flustered KB standing beside and looking around…. RATAN is cooking… a colourful character himself…floral shirts..bermuda….straight briar pipe…. Hat on head……possibly wearing a chefs apron over them now

RATAN : dhyat….vinegar chinish na…. oi sada bowl… arebaba knacher bati….hnya hnya right…..bah….(he pours that in the pan and stirs….then looks into the book)….simmer in low heat for fifteen minutes…jah baba….aro ponero minit….(looks at KB)..eta ki rnadchi bolto….pork tripe….kheyechis??? sourer intestine take porishkar kore tate minced meat diye .. amiki diyechi bolto…..foie de gras….fattened pieces of duck liver … Paris theke ashe…. dam janish??? saala loke main course khai….ami filling hisebe babohar kori……ohh.. heavenly….(suddenly remembers……) Oh…my god….…..(he runs off)

KB stands in the kitchen…staring at the arrangement……RATAN rushes in…….

RATAN : eta dhor…..(passes a bowl……)hold it hold it…..

As KB holds….RATAN measures a few glass tumblers of various liquids and pour those in….he mixes with a glass stirrer…

RATAN : koto taka bolli….ponero hajar….kintu toke shala pnach hajar taka dile tin bochchor ghurte hoy……ponero hajar dile to dos bochor ghurte hobe re…..

KB : (holding the bowl as RATAN takes a small sppon and sips) boro bipode pore gechi bhai..tui chara keu nei jar kache jete pari…

RATAN : (takes the bowland delicately pours) are sheto sobai jane….jekhanei mushkil sekhanei Ratan Talukdar. Want money.. rattan tauldar, face a problem .. rattan taludar, want to fix something .. rattan talukdar… kintu ami to tor moto chunopnutider case kori na ….(suddenly there’s a shout on the TV)….ei ja ja…giye dyakh to koto holo….

KB : (looks around)…ki ki.. ki dekhbo bhai….



RATAN : ARE BABA….. baire TV-te giye dyakh run koto holo…..

2. KB comes out…..adrawing room…..a huge TV… a huge aquarium….he looks around….

RATAN : (O.S) fourth wicket-e koto holo….

KB : (looks intently in the TV)… matro tinte wicket dekhchi…

RATAN appears in the doorway…

RATAN : khela-fela dekhis na naki….. scoreboard dekhabe….tokhon dekehe bol…..ei re….(he vanishes)…

KB : (bends near the TV)….bolche….hna hna.. ei ti….hundred and ten…..

RATAN : (shouts from inside)hundred hoye geche….????

He rushes in….

RATAN : dekhi dekhi…..fantastic….(he peeks in the TV)..wow….(he calls up anumber as he sees)…kya manojbhai.. ho gaya na……bola tha apko fourth wicketme rakh neke liye…..hna hna.. yie team alag hai…..dada hai dada…..are better luck next time….(he switches off).. jah tui to lucky re….eli ar char lakh taka jite gelam….. ne.. hoye gelo tor ponero hajar taka…..tobe ager barer moto jholas na….

KB : TV dekhe taka jite geli?? Eta ki lottery bhai??? Amai sikiye dibi??? Amar boro takar dorkar janish….

RATAN stares at him….

RATAN : tui saala kerani theke geli saara jibon……(he goes in the other way)

KB looks around…..goes near the TV and peeks….as if trying to see how the money can be won….

RATAN comes in….

RATAN : ne….. ager barer moto ghoras na….

KB rises takes the money……looks at the TV one last time….

KB : boro upokar korli bhai…..takar jonno bhabis na….bole jabo…ora thik diye debe…..



RATAN : takata diye ki korbi bolto?? Tor chehara to amar bhalo thekche na….ekta health check up koriye nish…. bujhli…. boyesh hochche to.,..cholestorol..lipid…triglyceride…. (suddenly hisface falls…..he almost screams)foie-de-gras…….(he vanishes inside)

KB looks around the empty room…..sees the TV….sighs…..goes out

3. The TV runs on an empty drawing room……there’s another event of some kind and another general shout….

RATAN comes out of the kiytchen and sits on the sofa……he is happy and dials again…

RATAN : Manojbhai….5th wicket-e ki call cholche…. 30….achcha ekta 45 ki hobe….are this is my lucky day sir….

He looksdown…..there’s a small piece of paper on the sofa where KB was sitting….he bends and picks it up…

Ratan : eta abar ki…….(on phone) kya…1 isto 4….ek minit…..hn..hnnnn….Amar mritur jonno keu dai noy????? Amar mrittur jonno…. (shouts) SORBONASH……??? Kanchan…..

He stands up……the cellphone falls…

Phone : hello…hello….

9. INT. DAY. LIC OFFICE COUNTER

A queue of people….KB at the front

COUNTERGUY : sob thik ache kaku…. jhokkas….ei botam tiplen ar apnar policy gulo update hoye gelo….ekhon lischinte morte parben…..computer ashar age hole tindin opekkha korte hoto …. hehe heh……(looks at him) hotat kore taka pelen koththeke… bonus pelen naki??

10.A. EXT. DAY. KOLKATA STREET

Kanchanbaboo is standing outside on the streets…looks…slowly walks to a PCO..thinks a little then dials a number……INTERCUTS with 10B

(CONTD AFTER 10B)

Hears the phone geeting banged on the otherside…..sighs…licks his lips puts down the phone….



10B. EXT/INT. DAY. MUDI SHOP

Phone rings. SRIHARI takes up….

SRIHARI : kya??? Kyake??? Na na ekhon keu apnar bouke deke feke dite parbe na…… (bangs the phone down)…. Abdar ar ki…..

11.EXT. DAY. KOLKATA STREET

Kanchanbaboo walking down the street. He looks at the Metro station……then turns and looks to a tall building…

Camera looks up and up…..

A POV long shot finds KB going into a building…the POV starts moving towards it…..

12.EXT. DAY. TOP OF A BUILDING

We see the wide vista of Kolkata. KB standing at the edge of a tall tower…back to us…..

Kanchanbaboo…does a pronam. He neatly keeps aside his sandals and his bag….then his wallet. He does another pronam and starts climbing over the wall….

A hand jumps imnto frame and grabs his shoulder…KB is startled….

Frantic, panting and excited voice of Ratan Talukder screams in his ears…

RATAN : (VO) Aiiii… janish na attohotta korle LIC taka dei na???

JUMP CUT TO

13. INT. DAY. RATAN’S HOUSE

Ice crinkles in whisky glass……whisky is poured. The TV is eternally playing….but RATAN is more focused now…at least for sometime

RATAN turns with two strong pegs….goes and gives one to a desolate KB sitting…almost at the same place….

RATAN : kheye ne….matha thanda hobe….budhdhi kaj korbe…



KB : na na ami..ami mod khai na … mane

RATAN : (stares) mod khas na??? No wonder attohotta korte gechili…..(he downs one glass in one gulp…coughs ..then sits nursing the other…) saala…tui to dangerous mal re… ponerohajar niye ekebare kete porchili……toke ami health checkr kotha bolchi ar tui bhabchis kokhon bungi jumping korbi… anyaa…toke taka deoai bhul hochchilo…

KB : bhai…chakrita geche..kothao ekta poisha nei….…mora chara amar ar upai nei …tor takai policyduto renew korlam…morle pore bou meye jodi duto taka pai….……(he looks away..tears streaming down..)…bhaggis bolli LIC attohotta korle taka dei na…ebar emon bhabe morbo jate ora bujhte na pare

RATAN : Saala defeatist…. thokabi to LIC-ke thokiye morbi keno…. sara jindegike thokiye bneche thak….saaala

RATAN rises…..goes to the bar….A call comes on the phone…

RATAN : (glanes at the TV)…thik hai manoj bhai…come easy..go easy….fir do lakh laga lijiye tenth wicket par……hnaa…. 20runs……(he laughs…) ha ha….(he puts the phone down..takes the loss like a man).. jah saaala…

He looks back….KB is wiping his eyes… RATAN shouts….

RATAN : Aiii .(KB startled..looks..) knadchis keno ???. saaala…..Ratan Talukdarer kache esechis mone rakhis….sob baba barbar Ratan Talukdar ekbar………mashe mashe taka chai???..... Runner hobi???

KB : runner???

RATAN : (drinks….gestures) runner janish na….chithi dei…shunish ni..runner choleche tai jhum jhum ghonta bajhche rate / runner choleche khoborer bojha hate / runner gramer runner….shomoy hoyeche notun khobor anar .. runner ..anar…runner…anar…runner….ki re….chithi bili korte parbi na….

KB looks at him….

RATAN : kodin ki re….saramash kaj korbi… …. doshta…ponerotao chithi per day.. tnake gorom poisha niye bari chole jabi…..

KB : kintu saara mashe to onek taka hobe bhai….ekebare tirish chollish hajar…(HB is incredulous..suddenly he stops)……

RATAN : (slightly mad) tirish choloish hajar hole tor baper problem hobe? Tor bape tirish hajar gunte parto anyaa…..morbar shomoy bole gechilo bujhi sat hajar takar beshi kamas na?

KB : na ..mane..eto taka….kajta..kajta legal to???

RATAN : (laughs out loud)..ha ha ha…..matha-kharap……??!!!! Sat hajar takar jaigai tirish hajar taka pabi mashe.. …eki kono legal kaje hoy re????

14.EXT. DAY. CITY STREET

1. Feet. People walking. KB’s feet. Kanchanbaboo iswalking down morosely..thinking…

2. Rumi & Tapan walk by….back to camera….suddenly..Rumi pulls him away…

Rumi : Baba…

They exit frame on right…Camera holds…..Kanchanbaboo enters frame….walks past….too deeply engrossed in his thought

3. Tapan looks to his left…KB walking away …

KB walks by..exists frame..

15.INT. EVENING. KB’s OLD HOUSE. DRAWING ROOM

KB enters drawing room….MALINA is inside..looks anxiously
