Eta State Convention Highlights for Kappa By Jeannette Carofano

Peggy Jackson led the Ceremony of Remembrance, solemnly recognizing Eta State deceased members. Included were Kappa’s dear sisters Ruth Hester and Mary Hazel Hatchette. Peggy also presided over a workshop on membership issues, titled “To Grow or not to Grow?”

Gloria Jones, Cindy Lockerman and Martha Tillman presented our Beginning Teachers Support Project “Thinking on your Feet” to a packed room with much acclaim.

Kappa received awards for our Newsletter, Website and Distinctive Chapter Achievements. Well done, Kappa!

Congratulations to Melinda Willison, Kappa’s Rising Star. Only 12 members throughout the state received this honor for their dedication to DKG and their promising leadership.

Tisa Clark, Debbie Dryden and Jeannette Carofano also proudly represented Kappa at the convention.

Mark your calendar today for 2017 Eta State Conference, …an event you don’t want to miss!

See you April 28-30, 2017 in Wilmington, NC!

Little Tidbits and General Announcements

Keep those Boxtops & Labels Coming This March through June Kappa contributed over 17.6 pounds of pop-tops. That’s at least four nights’ stays at Ronald McDonald House for families of hospitalized children. Ask your family and friends to help with this cause by saving their pop-tops, too, from canned drinks, soups, and other products. Let’s arrive with a load on October 18th! Thank you, Clara Hedberg, for regularly delivering our donations!

Educational Foundation Preparing for Second Round of Grants

The Foundation will again be offering grants in two categories: ♦ Professional/Personal Growth Grants ♦ Learning/Literacy Grants Proposals are to be submitted via email to the Grants Review Committee Chair and must be received no later than September 30, 2016. Announcement of grant recipients will made by November 20, 2016.

Proposal Forms and the email address for submitting proposals will be posted on the Foundation website in July. The URL is http://www.ncdkgef.org/.

“The Foundation is excited to partner with Foundation members and Eta State chapters to make possible educational projects that demonstrate creativity and collaboration with teachers, schools, community agencies meeting educational needs,” said Grants

Review Committee Chair Maxine McCall.

Cornetet Individual Professional Development Grants Available

DKG members needing funds for individual professional development are encouraged to apply for a Cornetet Grant through DKG Educational Foundation. Of the 45 applications reviewed in May, only 13 were DKG members. Applicants are encouraged to read instructions carefully. Nearly half the applications were disqualified due to incomplete or missing information. This is a wonderful opportunity for members to gain professional develop- ment in areas of their choosing. NC has been fortunate in the past to have a number of grants awarded to Eta State members. Now it is your turn! The grant application can be found at http://www.dkgef.org/awards.html.

TrainingTeachersinWar-TornandImpoverishedRegions

ByMelindaWillison

There are a vast number of needs throughout the world. As educators, we can narrow our focus on to determine the impact we can have on the educational needs. One organization, Operation Orphan offers such opportunities. I was first connected to the founder of this Britain-based organization through a mutual friend who served with her first hand. After spending a couple of years tracking the work of the organization and the outcomes, I am excited to seek an opportunity to serve with them as well. One of the ways they involve supporters of their mission is through Global Expeditions. Four are currently on calendar for the upcoming school year. One of which, I am submitting my own application for the possibility of serving in April 2017 and would like to invite you to pursue it as well.

In Sierra Leone, Africa, the team selected will spend their time training teachers at a local school established by Operation Orphan to train the teachers in strategies that will improve student learning. It will also include spending time with the children outside of the school setting as well. It is in a rural area and will be a rigorous itinerary, but well worth the sacrifices.
