The Karen Refugee Committee,
KAREN REFUGEE COMMITTEE
NEWSLETTER

MONTHLY REPORT
May, 2012
Newsletter and Activity report May-2012
The slogan "We Want To Go Home" has become the motivation behind the desire of the
refugees who are living in exile especially for the Karen refugees who have been living, for the last 40 years in seven refugee camps in Thailand. The dream of returning to our homeland has been the desire of the Karen refugees in Thailand.
We can say that, within this year 2012, there have been a sense of better chance for the returning of refugees. The present government, led by Thein Sein tries to create peace by entering into cease fire talks with different ethnic armed groups and the move slowly generates hope in the mind of the peace loving people. There have been constant war and conflict between ethnic groups and military government since Burma got her independence in 1948. But after the post-2010 election, in order to create lasting peace, the new government' policy of peace and development have been accepted by million of people in Burma, especially thousands of Karen refugees living in Thailand.
The immediate cause of refugee existence is due to the struggle for Karen self-autonomous state which resulted into atrocities committed by the Burmese military government such as killing, raping, destroying of villages and foods which displaced thousands of Karen in Karen state and ten of thousands become refugee in Thailand. Many Karen villagers, lost their families and land due to government policy of oppression and suppression. The possibility of easing the long old decade of war between Karens and military government is only through cease fire and entering into political dialogue. If the peace process initiated Aung Min under Thein Sein' administration were successful, it would be a great welcome by the refugees who want to return to their homeland. The second peace talk between Karen National Union and Thein Sein's government concluded recently, and there have a been a beam of hope between the two parties, but long lasting development is necessary and only building mature trust and sincerity will continue to foster in the peace process. As the saying goes, "Rome can not be built in a day" so also the restoration of democracy and development in Burma will need space and time. The international communities are hoping that, to create peace in the country, democratic government is to restore, human rights abuses should be ceased, with that, they have been trying by means of pressure and support. For the refugees, returning to our homeland has been our desire. But our sincere desire and request to the concerned international organizations and communities is that, we want to go back with peace, dignity, security and guaranteed life for our future under the international law.
Your comment is welcome!
