Goldman put together a collection of 50 selected blog posts (and 6 poems, and 1 cartoon) showcasing the quality and diversity of science writing on blogs in 2010. Professor Margaret Gatz to be made honorary doctor of medicine at Karolinska Institutet. Karolinska Institutet’s board of research has ap- pointed six new honorary doctors, who will have their doctorates formally conferred at a ceremony in the Stockholm City Hall on 13 May, when they will re- ceive their hat, diploma and ring from the Dean of Re- search as testimony to their status. Every year, Karo- linska Institutet awards honorary doctorates to people who have made vital contributions to the university. Congratulations Dr. Gatz! Dr. Gatz will be joining other notable Americans who are past recipients of the honorary Doctor of Medicine, such as Bill Gates ( pictured above at his Conferment Ceremony) and Michael J. Fox for his contribution to research on Parkinson’s Disease. The Open Laboratory is the yearly anthology of the best science writing on the web. Jason Goldman ( advisor, Frank Manis) served as editor for the 2010 edition, the fifth in the series, and also has an entry included in the anthology as well - a piece that he wrote for Scientific American online last summer. Over 900 blog posts were submitted for consideration - it was Jason’s job to narrow that down to just 50 posts, edit them, ensure that they translated well from internet to dead-tree printing, commission cover art and work with the artist to develop it, get the rights and permis- sion to reproduce the graphics and artwork, work with a colleague to typeset the whole thing and make it pretty, solicit reviews and quotes of "praise" included on the back cover, ultimately turning everything into a book. Karolinska Institutet to Award Honorary Degree

This year's editor Jason G. Goldman put together a collection of 50 selected blog posts (and 6 poems, and 1 cartoon) showcasing the quality and diversity of science writing on blogs in 2010.

Professor Margaret Gatz to be made honorary doctor of medicine at Karolinska Institutet.

Karolinska Institutet’s board of research has ap-pointed six new honorary doctors, who will have their doctorates formally conferred at a ceremony in the Stockholm City Hall on 13 May, when they will re-ceive their hat, diploma and ring from the Dean of Re-search as testimony to their status. Every year, Karo-linska Institutet awards honorary doctorates to people who have made vital contributions to the university.

Dr. Bosco Tjan has been appointed to the Low Vision and Blindness Rehabilitation planning panel of the National Eye Institute. The panel is charged to the develop the Institute’s next strategic plan, titled “Vision Research in 2011: Needs, Gaps, and Opportunities” in the area of low vision and blindness rehabilitation.

Esti Iturralde (advisor Dr Gayla Margolin) has been awarded an 3-year NSRA individual predoctoral fellowship from

NIH. The title is: “Peer Talk Influence on Adolescent Sexual Risk, Dating Aggression and Substance Use.” Ilana Kellerman (advisor Dr. Gayla Margolin) received an NSF Honorable Mention for her proposal titled “Spillover

Between Electornic and Face-to-Face Communication Among Adolescents.”

Dr. Margaret Gatz has received the 2011 Special Award for Outstanding Mentoring from the Mellon Mentoring Award Program. Dean Byrd stated, “This award is not given every year. However, when the panels evaluating nominations note someone particularly deserving, whose mentoring efforts extend across faculty, graduate students and undergraduates, the decision is made to recognize this faculty member. Marija Spanovic (advisor Dr. Norman Miller) has received a year-long College Dissertation Completion Award.

Michele Feng (advisor Dr. Gerald Davison) was selected by the Clinical Science Faculty of the USC Department of Psychology as the recipient of the 2011 Gerald C. Davison Award for Scientific Writing in Clinical Psychology. This award is in recognition of her article, “Age-related Affective Modulation of the Startle Eye-blink Response: Older Adults Startle Most When Viewing Positive Pictures”, in-press.

Dr. Wendy Wood and colleagues from psychology and beyond, were awarded College 2020 funding for “ Adapting to Downturn, Rising with Recovery: Multi-Method Training for Social, Behavioral Scientists”

Dr. Jesse Graham has received funding from the Templeton Foundation for his grant titled, “The varieties of moral strength and weakness: Using value -environment interactions to reduce moral hypocrisy”
