Attribute: The conflicts make it realistic and historical because Nellie Mae has to choose to either stay with the Ordnung or go with the new church. And some Amish men want to use tractors instead of their horses.

Attribute 1: The conflicts make it realistic and historical because Nellie Mae has to choose to either stay with the Ordnung or go with the new church. And some Amish men want to use tractors instead of their horses.

“Several men were talking about tractors, and others were raising their voices in favor of electricity, and cars, too. ‘we don’t just want’em, we need’em.!’ one man huffed.” (33)

While some bishops did permit families to install a phone for the purpose of medical emergencies, Nellie could not imagine Uncle Bishop allowing one. No, he and preachers Lapp and Manny embraced the Old Order as much as any minister she knew.(99)

“He let go of her hand and leaned forward, the reins draped over the lap robe. ‘Nellie, it all boils down to this: My father would disown me if I left the church for this newfangled whatever it is. I’d have no way of making a living… for us. I’d lose everything. The land, my immediate family. Daed’s respect.’…” (330)

“The hay wagon jolted forward, and he remembered precisely where he’d stood in the tobacco-drying barn when the astonishing news reached his ears.(239)

“A hush spread over the barn as he went around, pointing to each man to inquire of his decision. After the first man, the bishop literally began taking role, asking for a ‘yea’ or ‘nay’ on up holding the Ordnung.”(316)
