HALLIWELL.

HAJ^LIWELL is a populous Township in the parish of Deane, adjoining Little Bolton, containing an area of 2320 acres, the rateable value of which was in March, 1866, .£23,243, in March, 1868, ,£24,907, and in March of the present year, 1870, £29,942. The pop­ ulation of the township in 1861 was 5,953, and has increased very rapidly since that date. There are large cotton mills and the extensive bleach works of Messrs. R. Ains­ worth, Son & Co. here. The church of St.

Peter, a handsome stone building in the early English style of architecture, with tower containing an excellent peal of eight bells, was erected in 1844 by subscription, but chiefly at the expense of John Horrocks Ainsworth, Esq. The interior is handsomely fitted up, embellished with 3 painted windows, and fur­ nished with a fine organ. The living is of the annual value of .£170, in the gift of four trustees ; the Rev. T. A. Lindon, M.A., is the present vicar. Mr. Ainsworth also, at his

own expense, erected another church in the village, called St. Paul. The living of the annual value £180, is held by the Rev. Arthur Packer, B.A. St. Luke's Church (now in course of erection), is in the Gothic style of architecture, the walls are of rubble stone with brick dressings, and is estimated to cost from X4000 to £5000, the site was given by John Musgrave, Esq. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. There are National Schools; also a

HORWICH.HORWICH is a township, and populous

village in Deane parish, 5 miles west-north­ west from Bolton, 5 miles north-east from Chorley and 15 north-west from Manchester. It is situate on the high road from Bolton to Chorley, and about one mile from the Horwich junction station on the Lancashire and York­ shire line of Railway. A branch lino from the junction to Horwich was opened for the conveyance of goods about the middle of September, 1869, and for passenger traffic on February 14, 1870. It is in the southern division of the county, Salford hundred, Bol­ ton union, county court district, Manchester archdeaconry and diocese. The church of the Holy Trinity is a stone edifice in the Gothic style of architecture, erected in 1831, at a cost of £6,000, raised partly by a parlia­ mentary grant, and partly by subscription. The first stone was laid on the 21st of May 1831, by the late Joseph Ridgway, Esq., of Ridgmont. It has nave, two aisles, a lofty tower containing six bells, and a very hand­ some window of stained glass, and a hand­ some monument, by Westmacott, to the memory of the late Joseph Ridgway, Esq.,

who by his will left the following annual donations to the church, viz., to the organist, £40; the bellows blower, .£10 ; the choir, £30 ; the ringers, £24 ; the clerk, £16 ; the verger, £12, for winding the clock and ring­ ing the curfew bell, £10 ; and the further sums of £100 to the minister, and £800 for a new house, which has recently been erected at a cost of £1,200, the remainder being raised by subscription, £100 to the poor, and £50 to the school at the east end of the church. The living is of the annual value of £334, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Deane, and held by the Rev. Henry Septimus Pigot, M.A., of Brasenose College, Oxford. Lee Chapel, belonging to the Inde­ pendents, is a handsome stone building, erected about 1855 : there is another chapel for Independents in the township, also one for Wesleyans, and one for the Pr.'.mitive Methodists. The National school is a large plain stone building, erected in 1832. There are bleaching, dyeing, cotton spinning, fire brick, tile, and terra cotta works, a peat char­ coal works, and colleries in the township. The Liverpool waterworks are sitnate at the

west end of the township. The Eev. Henry Wright, of Mottram Hall, Cheshire, and the Stoner family, are the principal landowners. The rateable value of the township in March, 1866, was £12,087 ; March, 1888, £12,314; and in the same month of the present year, 1870, .£12,729. The acreage is 3,280 ; the population in 1861 was 8,471.
