The Spring Term is always a busy administrative time within the school, in particular planning for the next academic year. This term has been no exception and in January, Simon Giddings, Ciaran Har-rington and I were involved in the School’s largest ever recruitment round. This year’s appointments for the secondary campus are particularly significant, as they will complement the skills and experience of our current staff in developing the secondary curriculum to full ‘A’ level provision. Advertisements were placed locally in the SCMP and internationally in the Times Educa-tional Supplement (TES); together drawing a very strong field of local, regional, UK and international applications. Following short-listing, interviews took place in both Hong Kong and London. I am delighted to advise you that following the first round we have secured a number of excellent staff who bring to their new roles a combination of experiences from leading local and regional international schools; and those from the UK experience in both the state and independent school sector. All are excellent teachers, and many have extensive senior management experience. In common with our current staff they all have ‘A’Level experience and are excited at the prospect of joining a developing school. Primary Staff for August 2010Primary Staff for August 2010Primary Staff for August 2010Primary Staff for August 2010 We continue our search for the Primary Librarian; I am very grateful to both Emma Santler and Chris Jackson who are currently job-sharing the role. Emma will be leaving us at the end of this term as she is expecting her second child. The Librarian post has been re-advertised lo-cally, in the UK and in Australia. Sadly there has been a very disappointing response. Should we be unable to make a permanent appointment, a temporary appointment will be made. School CampsSchool CampsSchool CampsSchool Camps On the Primary Campus our Key Stage Two campers have all returned safely having thor-oughly enjoyed their experience. Primary 3 stayed at Pak Tam Chung Camp at Sai Kung; their programme included a visit to Sheung Yiu Village and the traditional BBQ. The children had a wonderful first school camp experience and cannot wait for their extended camp in P4. Primary 4 camped at the YWCA Sunset Camp, Lantau Island. This site has been completely rebuilt with superb facilities. The excellent accommodation is supplemented by a range of on-site adventurous activities including a challenging rope course, a climbing wall and orien-teering. Located close to Lower Cheung Sha Beach it provides an excellent location for ex-ploring Lantau Island. Primary 6 piloted a new extended camp format that included sleeping under canvas at Chong Hing Water Sport Centre and staying in dormitories at Pak Tam Chung. This year our campers were fortunate weather wise; their camps coincided with a brief respite from the cold snap. Although a little damp, it was considerably warmer than of late. This was particularly appreci-ated by those who enjoyed water sports as part of their camp programme. Thank you to all our staff and parents who contributed to the success of the camps. The camps are not only great fun, they also provide our children with opportunities to develop their independence and support the school’s academic programme. Plans are well in hand for the Primary 5 Beijing visit, scheduled for 10 – 14 May. The Educational Visits programme continues at the Shau Kei Wan Campus with curriculum focused field trips to Kota Kinabalu for Y7 and Chiang Rai for Y8. Current P6 and secondary parents are currently being consulted on a proposed recreational ski trip to Switzerland to be

The Saturday Soccer is drawing to a close on 20 March. This season has flown by; Saturday Soccer continues to be a very popular activity for students and parents alike. This year marks Saturday Soccer’s fourteenth season, it has come a very long way from its early days in a dusty corner at Sandy Bay. Saturday Soccer was initiated by a group of enthusiastic parents’ intent on providing the opportunity to share sport with their children. This tradition continues to-day. I am very grateful to Adam Osborn, Fiona McGregor and all the parent coaches for an-other very successful season, your contributions to the school community are very much ap-preciated. MusicMusicMusicMusic Once again the Music Department’s annual production proved to be a real treat. This year they performed The Music Man over three evenings. Friday and Saturday rehearsals com-menced in January for the performers and the production team. The past two weeks have been particularly busy doing final fittings for costumes that could easily grace any Broadway show while a group of talented parents wielding saws, power drills and paint brushes pro-duced a stunning set which provided a fitting back drop to our children’s wonderful perform-ances of the spoken word, song and dance routines. Needless to say despite his hectic sched-ule Mr Cox has remained as calm as ever. Congratulations to everyone, the crew, parents and staff for a very polished and professional production. A very special mention for the cast, you were fantastic! Well done and thank you all for a wonderful show! The Music Man follows on the back of two very successful Music Department favourites. In December the second Carols by Candlelight went ahead despite the bitterly cold weather, the gymnasium proved a popular and much warmer venue to the playground. In February the department hosted their traditional Instrumental Recital Evening show-casing individual mu-sicians, duets, ensembles and the School Band. The Instrumental Evening is one of my favour-ite evenings in the school calendar, celebrating our most inexperienced to accomplished musicians. Next term is equally busy for the Music Team as they prepare for the Annual Music Concert to be held on 21 June at the Canadian International School Theatre. Whether or not your child is involved it is a date worth popping in the calendar and I encourage you to attend for a de-lightful evening of music that includes pupils, parents, staff and Kellett Alumni. As reported in the last Dragon, the school is preparing for a visit from an inspection team as a part of our ongoing self evaluation procedures. The Primary campus will have a team of two experienced inspectors in school from Mon-day April 19th to Wednesday April 21st. Both inspectors are registered to carry out OfSTED (Office for Standards in Edu-cation), ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) and Interna-tional School inspections, an important factor for Kellett given the nature of our position globally and as a school. The team will be looking to validate the findings of our own internal evaluation procedures. Gone are the days of an inspection team turning up at a school to make a subjective judgment based on a ‘snapshot’ of what they see over a small period of time. Instead schools regularly evaluate themselves against set criteria for the inspectors to work with. A new framework of criteria was brought into the inspection arena back in Septem-ber 2009. We looked at the document very closely with our visiting School Im-provement Partner during her visit in October and agreed as a school that the new structure was very supportive to what we were doing in terms of self evaluation and improvement. We were already using the SEF (Self Evaluation Form) from the previous inspection framework to make judgments about how well we were doing and what needed to be done next to improve. This had been split into seven dis-tinct sections. The new framework follows a similar agenda but the sections have been modified. Inspectors now look at judgments made on; Outcomes for pupils (how well they are learning) Provision (what they are learning) Leadership (how well we know about the two above) Early Years (the Reception classes)

Simon Gid-Simon Gid-Simon Gid-Simon Gid-Spring brought that amazingly bright, fresh green growth to the trees and shrubs which are such a domi-nant feature of the SKW campus. It also brought a surge in socialising between the Kellett and Elsa stu-dents. At break time and lunch time, students from both schools sit and chat or play football or basketball on the Astroturf. The joint student council is preparing for the launch of their tuck shop and campus wide recy-cling programme and talk is now moving to joint fund raising activities. Six months after moving to the SKW campus the relationship between Kellett and Elsa con-tinues to bloom. Spring also brings a significant amount of planning for the following academic year. The recently appointed six additional secondary teaching staff for the next academic year will add to our current expertise and ex-perience and enable us to continue our growth and ex-pansion towards offering full provision up to Year 13. Y8 have been exploring “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor-Coleridge. Writ-ten in 1798, this narrative poem is an intriguing and thought-provoking text. However, this year we have used 21st Century learning at its most powerful, to explore the poem and offer greater insights. After an initial reading and discussion about parts 1, 2 and 3, the students used Voicethread to explore Death and Night-mare-Life-in-Death, reflecting on their perceptions of the characters described by Col-eridge and illustrated by Gustave Dore. The students then collaborated using the w o r d -process-ing ele-ment of G o o g l e Docs to w r i t e their own verse for Death. This demanded a significant understanding of Coleridge’s style, focusing on the rhyme scheme, rhythm, use of figurative language as well as se-lecting appropriate language, over two hundred years later.

Using Shelfari, a social networking site for readers, students are able to construct their bookshelf to display books they have read; books they are reading and books they are planning to read. They can then review books and find out what the other Year 8 students, the library and I have been reading. In order to develop their independent reading further and to ensure that they are aware

Congratulations to the boys also who brought home a trophy after playing in the HKIS U13’s basketball tournament on Satur-day 6th March. They finished second in their pool which advanced them to the Plate playoffs. They were the eventual winners showing solid defence and some great shooting. The staff from HKIS commented

on the improvement in the boys’ play since the last tournament which is a credit to all the practising they have been doing recently. Congratulations to the U13 FOBISSEA Games squad and their coaches, who returned to Hong Kong after a very successful competition in Ho Chi Min. The team participated in the ‘C’ group U13 Games along with eight other schools from South East Asia. Watch this space for a full report in the next issue of Dragon.

In March several classes were able to attend the Man Literary Festival. P5 heard Morris Gleitzman – a very well respected Australian author of a huge number of books includ-ing Blabbermouth, Toad Rage and Worry Warts. Years 7 and 8 heard Derek Landy, au-thor of the Skulduggery Pleasant series about a skeleton detective and winner of the Red House Children’s Book Award 2008. We also had a visit from storyteller Bob Wilkins to read to several classes in the library. They all very much enjoyed his visit and his charismatic delivery. Many thanks to all those students who entered this year’s Photography Competition,

which was run jointly with the School Council. Over 70 entries were received and the judges will have a hard time deciding which photos will win each year group category. It’s good to see how ICT is impacting upon the wider curriculum and Year 5 have been working hard to create digital media as a result of their study of the poem The Highway-man. As this work is finished it will be published on Youtube. One or two parents have commented on the use of Youtube in the classroom. Youtube is an excellent teaching resource which has made a huge impact upon learning and gives students the opportunity to access information and expertise as well as a channel to publish their work to a global audience. Like the internet in general, there is some content within the site which is inappropriate in schools and we use a variety of tech-niques to avoid stu-dents accessing that content. However, an important aspect of 21st century education is teaching our students how to use a resource like Youtube in a responsible and ethical way. Reflections on our work and ICT in general can be found on our blog at http://kellettschool.blogspot.com – you can also see a sneak preview of some of the Photography Competition entries there. This half term has been very busy for the PE Department. We have started badminton in Games for both Year 7 and 8 going offsite to Quarry Bay Sports Centre. The students have also had the opportunity to learn the basics of squash. They are really enjoying the chance to play these two racquet sports and are starting to understand and demon-strate the techniques and tactics needed in each of them. Racquet sports will continue next term when a tennis unit will be introduced. We have had lots of success in our recent matches and tournaments in basketball, foot-ball and n e t -ball. In n e t -ball the U 1 2 ’s and U 1 3 ’s played in a f r i e n d l y tour-n a m e n t a t W o n g Chuk H a n g w i t h the U12’s winning all their matches beating Shatin College, Island School, South Island School and the French School and the U13’s beating the French School, Chinese Interna-tional School and Diocesan Girls School and losing just one match to West Island School. Girls Football NewsGirls Football NewsGirls Football NewsGirls Football News The girls have enjoyed more training this term and have also had fun playing some friendly matches against Chinese International School who have brought teams on two occasions to play during Wednesday afternoon training. We had 3 teams entered into the HKIS Tai Tam Tigers tournament, which took place on Sunday 14th March. The girls thoroughly enjoyed competing against other clubs and schools. The Primary 3 girls worked really hard, many enjoying participating in their very first tournament. They had some close games in their league matches and went through to the bowl competi-tion, where they lost one game and drew one game, unfortunately not enough to take home any silver wear. Primary 4 girls did e x -tremely well, winning all their league matches and going into the cup competition as strong favourites, unfortunately they couldn’t score in the deciding match in the compe-tition, but should be very proud of their achievements. The Primary 5 girls were playing in the U11 age group, so against some harder and much older competition! They bat-tled well in their pool games’, ending up with two loses and one win. They moved into the bowl competition where they lost to penalties. Thanks to all who came and sup-ported! Primary 4 team enjoying a rest! A love of learning and confidence for life

Student reflections on World Maths Day:Student reflections on World Maths Day:Student reflections on World Maths Day:Student reflections on World Maths Day: On the third of March 2010 it was World Maths Day. We were all ready to face the rest of the world in a single competition that might mark our name in the leader board forever. Tension bubbled up in me as the website scanned the world for another player who, like me, would be filled with nerves. Without warning, the numbers 3, 2, 1 popped up onto the screen and it began! I raced through the question but so did my competitors from Africa and America. I continued to type in numbers like never before. As suddenly as it had begun it ended and I realised I had come first and beaten my record! Robin Van Aeken, Yr 7 PanthersRobin Van Aeken, Yr 7 PanthersRobin Van Aeken, Yr 7 PanthersRobin Van Aeken, Yr 7 Panthers 3, 2, 1, GO! We were off! My energy was suddenly sapped from every point in my body and went to my fingers and brain. Everything around me became invisible as I focused and started typing numbers into my keyboard as quickly as they came into my head. I flew past my opponents who had had at least a twelve point lead. Seeing “first place and high score” next to my name was the only thing that mattered to me. My hands felt like they were on fire and my brain was overloading with the answers of all of the ques-tions that were popping up on the screen. Five seconds left! 4, 3, 2, 1…… The score was being processed and I was sitting on the spot with my fingers quivering from cramp and pressure. The screen changed page and I smiled so wide I could have lit a dark room. Four words were on the screen before me- “First place, High Score.” World Maths Day has been an absolute thrill this year. I have loved competing with loads of people around the world and even some from Hong Kong as well! The only downside to it was that it all flew past as quickly as it started. Even though I didn’t do as well as other people playing, I still enjoyed playing it and it has been a big hit for me in Maths this year. I can’t wait to do it next year!!! I was on the World Maths Day website a lot not for the points, but for the excitement of playing against people around the world. It is wonderful to watch the chil-dren turn up, at what feels like the crack of dawn on a Saturday, with great enthusiasm and energy. There have been over 100 children participating this year from the small P1s to the somewhat larger Year 7 & 8s. All of them supported, of course, by their keen par-ents! What makes it bearable for those parents is the provision of hot coffee and deli-cious croissants. A big thank you goes to Bridget Salmon for organising this, Nicki Taylor for making sure the croissants turn up and for all those parents who help out on a regular basis. All the money raised from this goes to Kellett Cares. Saturday soccer would not happen without the dedication of the coaches. Many Dads and Mums turn up week after week, despite the weather, to ensure the children have a

Une Galette des Rois is a cake made to be eaten on the holiday Epiphanie (January 6) to celebrate the Three Kings in France, Spain and in some ancient French speaking parts of the United-States, like Louisiana: a simple paste known as Frangipane is all that is inside two rounds of puff dough (recipe is on www2.kellettschool.com/French/FrenchHome). On the 3rd of March, 2010 it was World Maths Day! World Maths Day was such a fun ex-perience for me and my friends. I enjoyed competing against all the people online and even better some of my friends in class! I enjoy learning Maths, but World Maths Day was definitely the most fun activity that we have done in Maths. I felt so excited when I started answering the questions and got them correct. I also loved it when we got to play the World Maths Day competition in the auditorium. We had to race against time and other teams to answer as many questions as we could in the time we had. The ten-sion started to build up inside me when there were 10 seconds left and Rebecca, Lauren and I couldn’t figure out the last question. There was now only 1 second left and we gave our final answer in. We got it correct! Our group was so happy; we finally got the answer right! Living in Hong Kong we have the great advantage of being able to witness first hand the CNY celebrations. From big shopping malls to small alleys, CNY decorations are every-where and the city is painted with red and gold. At Kellett, students in various year groups were busy preparing traditional arts and crafts for display to uplift the mood of the school for Chinese New Year. They made lanterns from laisee packets, tissue paper plum blossoms, lions with movable body parts and spring couplets. They also learned

the skills of paper cutting, one of the most ancient and traditional arts and crafts of China. They made the 12 zodiac animals, fishes, auspicious Chinese characters and sym-bols, and many others. Their art works were displayed at the first landing near the Re-ception classes. Here are some of their displays:

Each student has been assigned a Medieval monarch and given the responsibility of planning and delivering a half hour lesson to their class. All students have produced/are producing excellent Power Point presentations and worksheets for their students and there have been some fun quizzes and even

film clips too. A love of learning and confidence for life
