BACKGROund Kellett school was founded in 1976 when a group of parents came together with a shared vision to shape their children’s education and future potential. this shared vision was to invest time, energy, finances and talent to empower students to achieve their personal best, educationally and personally. What started as a small school with just two classes, has now evolved to an international school with wide curriculum breadth and high academic standards spanning across both preparatory and senior level schooling. Kellett school today enjoys a reputation as one of the leading British international schools in Asia.

the legacy left by Kellett’s founding members continues to benefit the whole Kellett Community. engendering a love of learning and confidence for life is central to evolving possibilities for all Kellett students.

Kellett school launched its first Annual Fund in 2012. the positive impact of the enhancements facilitated by the community’s support of all three campaigns to date, has enabled the broadening of the educational experiences Kellett school can offer to students. enhancements proposed for this year closely align with the school’s curriculum development plan, amplifying the foundations of learning for all students.

Kellett school invites its community to support this year’s Annual Fund, to continue to enhance the educational experiences and to support our students in their journey to achieving personal excellence, building transferrable skills and developing a global outlook.

A gift to the Annual Fund is an investment in over 1200 students. no gift is too small. every gift is important and every gift makes a difference.

AnnuAl Fund AspiRAtiOnsKellett school hopes donations made to the Annual Fund will see a return on investment as follows:

An elevated educational experience that results in greater engagement in learning, increased knowledge and the insight to build upon, improve and apply that knowledge appropriately

the advancement of personal and cultural values to promote confident, well rounded students who relish the responsibility of being life-long contributors to society

the development of Kellett school’s local and international reputation as a feeder school to highly regarded schools and universities worldwide

the fostering of a culture of philanthropy within Kellett school to benefit current and future students and the whole Kellett Community

Priority1:Student LeaderShip Motivating students to look ahead to the future, to take initiative to change the status quo, to set a good example for others, to build team work and trust, and to encourage others to succeed, will help Kellett students to have the confidence to step forward and become the best leaders they can be.

Kellett School Learning Service in the Community ProgrammeKellett school would like to establish a sustainable community learning service programme for Kellett students. the programme aims to engage students with the wider Hong Kong community, to raise awareness of local issues and to develop the culture of ‘service’ within the school community, allowing students to learn about themselves and develop highly transferable skills whilst helping others. A learning service Coordinator would be appointed, who would implement and communicate a three year plan with clear milestones, with a view that by the end of this academic year, some students will have already experienced learning service opportunities. the initiative will initially focus on involving senior school students, with a view to extending to the preparatory students once the programme is established. this initiative matches very closely with Kellett school’s mission to develop students’ confidence for life. this is a project that was in the school’s future plans. Bringing it in as an Annual Fund priority would significantly accelerate this project and in turn accelerate the rate at which our students see the benefits of such an advancement.

Visit by Ben Walden - Contender Charliethis initiative involves inviting uK-based Ben Walden, director at Contender Charlie, to Kellett to work with our 6th Form in developing their leadership skills and to explore the human condition through creativity. Contender Charlie uses shakespearean plays and other mythological stories to explore emotional and creative development, helping students become more effective in understanding their own emotions, motivations and values, as well as to improve their literacy skills. themes of the sessions include the development of emotional intelligence and responsible and contributive citizenship.

AnnuAl Fund pRiORities 2015-16

the Annual Fund aims to address enhancements for the whole school with a balance of gain for preparatory school students in both pok Fu lam and Kowloon Bay and senior school students. the priorities have been identified to align with the school development plan and are prioritised to complement the current school curriculum.

Guest Speaker Programmethe popular Guest speaker programme facilitates students to hear directly from individuals who have achieved success in their chosen fields. the immediacy of the speaker encourages students to probe the motivation for the guest’s ambition, dedication and success. the inspiration drawn from the speakers impacts each individual student differently. in the past we have been honoured to welcome prestigious speakers such as world famous explorers sir Ranulph Fiennes and sir Chris Bonnington, astrophysicist, engineer and doctor – dr Kevin Fong, local politician paul Zimmerman and former scotland international rugby player dan parks, to name just a few. each of these individuals inspire students in different ways and remind them that all dreams are achievable if you work hard enough to make them happen.

Priority 2:

academic enhancement Enhancements of the regular school curriculum encourage students to experience education in a wider context and cultivate a student’s interest to understand the greater possibilities that school learning underpins.

Kellett Christmas Lecturesdrawing inspiration from the annual Royal institution Christmas lectures, the science department would like to start a new tradition at Kellett: annual science-themed “Kellett Christmas lectures”. Kellett’s science teachers would bring the subject of science to life running their own demonstrative talks and by inviting a science guest speaker who would inspire students, parents and teachers alike at a festive extravaganza for the whole Kellett Community.

Development of Computer Sciencethis initiative involves engaging a uK specialist consultant to review Kellett’s iCt Curriculum and to advise on developing an enhanced Computer science Curriculum in preparatory years and Key stage 3. the revised curriculum will comprise of Coding, iCt and social Media awareness and personal e-safety. the consultant will work in conjunction with Mr dawes and curriculum leaders to be able to thoroughly review our current provision. the necessary training for teaching staff will be delivered in situ. this is a project that was in the school’s future plans. Bringing it in as an Annual Fund priority would significantly accelerate this project and in turn accelerate the rate at which our students see the benefits of such an advancement.

Books Go Walkaboutit is hoped that this project would be launched in March 2016 during Book Week, giving our preparatory students the opportunity to engage with authors and illustrators from across the world either through direct presence in school or through skype conversations. the bespoke programme delivered by Books Go Walkabout would run over two terms and include an introduction to books ahead of the event, a comprehensive study guide for all authors’ books and access to the comprehensive Books Go Walkabout online resources, which would be available to teachers and parents alike. After author contact, students will continue the programme by writing reviews, with the opportunity to have their work published on the Books Go Walkabout website! A large work of art would also be produced by students in line with their projects. the programme would be cross-curricular, aiming to develop a love of reading,

The priorities for the 2015-16 Annual Fund will be funded in the following order:

enhance writing skills and to engage imagination and creativity.

Priority 3: LeaderS in Learning Participation in staff development programmes enriches an individual’s growth, helps develop the school’s intellectual repository and supports the delivery of the most up-to-date pedagogy for the benefit of all Kellett students.

Maths Consultant - Andrew JeffreyAndrew Jeffrey is an expert in making Mathematics accessible to children, running Magic Message, a company specialising in Mathematics training and support for teachers. Andrew would work with our preparatory teachers to help them expand their knowledge in order to plan and deliver the new, more challenging Mathematics curriculum. the focus would be on developing the critical thinking skills of high-attainers whilst using primary methods to deliver level 6 content. Andrew would run staff meetings, model lessons and work directly with all preparatory teachers. this is a project that was in the school’s future plans. Bringing it in as an Annual

Fund priority would significantly accelerate this project and in turn accelerate the rate at which our students see the benefits of such an advancement.

Priority 4: SportS Sporting challenges have always played a key role in Kellett aiming to promote sportsmanship, develop motor skills and nurture the principles of practice, persistence and patience.

Sports Guest Speakerthe sports department would like to invite a top class sporting athlete or coach to inspire students to achieve success and develop perseverance, in sports as well as academically and personally. the speaker would allow students to learn about the resilience needed to overcome obstacles, hearing directly from an individual who has been through a journey to achieve outstanding sporting success.

Priority 5:

muSic & the artS

The opportunity for students to engage in music & the arts, through

band, chorus, dance, drama, performance, art, design and the writing of original literary pieces, provides a means of expression, creativity and opportunity, in addition to the documented beneficial links to the sciences, maths and the natural world.

Musician in Residence - Jumbie Jamsthe preparatory Music department would like to invite a Musician in Residence to introduce a steel pan project using Jumbie Jams; classroom-friendly beginner’s steel drums. Kimberly M. Roberts, a Musician in Residence with extensive experience and a passion for teaching, would run workshops teaching students to play the Jumbie Jams whilst incorporating an understanding of the historical, social and geographical origins of Calypso and steel pan music. the project would involve purchasing a set of Jumbie Jams, allowing the instruments to leave a lasting legacy to be rolled out into the on-going Music curriculum. the instruments would also provide students with opportunities to perform as a class or larger ensembles.

What is an Annual Fund? An Annual Fund is a Parent Advocate led, yearly fundraising effort where donations are requested from within the school community and where proceeds are used to enhance educational experiences through identified priorities relevant to the school at that given time. Priorities are generally not capital expenditure and every effort is made to ensure that funds are spent or allocated in the 6-10 months following the campaign to benefit current students.

Why does Kellett invite donations on top of school fees?Kellett School is a not-for-profit organisation. Additional income sources such as donations from the Parents’ Committee, The Annual Fund and Friends of Kellett School, allow Kellett School to offer special enhancements to the students’ educational experience without affecting school fees.

Who is being asked to give? All Kellett parents, staff, school board members and past donors.

Is it compulsory that I donate? No. While our main goal is 100% participation by the Kellett Community, the school wishes to stress that donations are voluntary and each family’s decision is duly respected. Donations should be freely given with no expectations of personal gain other than due thanks and recognition.

Why is participation so important?Participation is a testament to what Kellett is doing and a statement to foundations, corporations and prospective students that Kellett comprises a community actively involved in the advancement of its mission – to engender ‘a love of learning and confidence for life’ in each of its students.

Is there a minimum amount I must give if I wish to participate? No. You choose what you feel is appropriate for your family to give. While the school would like to match funds raised in previous years, the ultimate goal is 100% participation by the Kellett

Community and every contribution is important and appreciated.

Will my gift make a difference?Absolutely! Every gift has an impact making a positive difference to Kellett School’s students, families, teachers and community. Your gift will also help the school build a culture of philanthropy for the benefit of present and future generations.

Who will know the value of what I have donated?

Donor donation values will be recognised in the annual ‘Thank You’ Report of Giving in value range brackets.

Donors $0-$2,499Supporters $2,500-$9,999Patrons $10,000-$24,999Benefactors $25,000-$49,999Principal’s Circle $50,000-$99,999Chairman’s Circle $100,000-$249,9991976 Society $250,000+

Donors have the option not to have their donation value categorised in the Report of Giving or not to have their name included at all in the Report of Giving.

Why were donation value bands introduced?Donation Bands were introduced at the request of parents who were seeking guidance regarding gifting levels. It is important to note that having a donation listed in these bands is entirely voluntary and that donors may still have their name listed without indication of a band, or may remain completely anonymous, should they so wish.

How will the community be informed of Fund totals?Updates to the whole community will be posted on the weekly eBulletin, the termly Kellett Dragon magazine, Kellett’s Facebook page and on the Annual Fund projector at Kowloon Bay. These updates will include participation percentages, the total value of the fund and all priorities funded. The Annual Fund campaign will run until 4 December 2015 after which the total sum raised will be published. ‘Thank You’, the

annual magazine to recognise Kellett community generosity will be published at the end of the Academic year and will report on funds received as well as funds spent or allocated.

Can I direct my donation to a certain priority or just to the part of the school my child attends? The Annual Fund aims to address enhancements for the whole school with a balance of gain for Prep and Senior students in both Pok Fu Lam and Kowloon Bay schools. The priorities have been identified to correlate with the school development plan, in the order that is considered best to match current school curriculum requirements. The school asks that you permit senior management to allocate the funds received responsibly, in the order identified.

Should you wish to financially support an area where you believe students would benefit from enhancements not listed in the Annual Fund Priorities, please contact the Principal, Ms Ann Mc Donald for discussion.

Do other schools in Hong Kong raise money in this way?Yes, similar not-for-profit schools in Hong Kong (CIS, HKIS, CDNIS, KGV, Hong Lok Yuen) and elsewhere have identified the need to supplement operating budgets to enhance student programmes. Annual Funds are recognised as the corner stone of fund-raising for many academic institutions and have a proven record of positive impact. The Kellett School Annual Fund is distinctly Kellett, sensitive in its approach and community inclusive.

What is a Parent Advocate? The Annual Fund Parent Advocate is a volunteer who is available to discuss the Annual Fund and answer any queries from a parent-to-parent perspective. An advocate will contact each family by email.
