ROMLEY is supposed to have derived its name from. the Saxon word Bromleag, in Latin Bromlega, signifying
.. a field, or heath, where Broom grows; sufficient quantity. of the plant still existed a few years ago on the waste
places near the town to corroborate this etymology.
Bromley is a municipal and market town and parish situated ten milesfrom London (S.E.) and fourteen from Sevenoaks, on the main ~oad toHastings, and is in the hundred of Bromley and Beckenham, lathe ofSutton-at-hone, rural deanery and diocese of Rochester. The parish isbounded by Beckenham, West Wickham, Hayes, Keston, Farnbo~Dugh,Orpington, Ohislehurst, Lee, Eltham, and Lewisham, and contains 4,706acres of land.

BHOMLEY DIRECTOltY. 65
Bromley is a very healthy place, and to this fa~t, and the beauty ofthe scenery by which it is surrounded, is largely due its popularity as a.place of residence. Dr. Codd, the l\'IedicalOfficerof Health, states in hisreport for 1907,that the death rate for that year was only 9'41 per 1,000,against a death rate of 15'0 for England and Wales, and 12'4 for the outerring of London. The water is supplied entirely by the Kent Districtof the Metropolitan Water Board, whose supplies are drawn from deepwells sunk in the chalk. It is remarkably free from organie impurities, andis quoted as a standard for purity in the metropolitan areas, but is rather., hard" in consequence of tIle carbonate of lime held in solution. The·centre of the town (The "Bell" Hotel) is situate 200ft. above the levelof the sea.

interesting trace of a Roman Settlement was discovered at "Beechfield,"the residence of the late Mr. J. W. !lotto A workman employed in themaking of some alterations of the grounds, turned up, from the depth ofabout fourteen or sixteen inches below the surface, a sepulchral vase ofcoarse red ware, ornamented with oblique longitudinal lines. By the sideof the vase was about a shovelful of bones, and fragments of tile. Thevase itself was completely filled with a quantity of bones, partly incin-erated, some of which Mr. Ilott pronounced to be human. Further searchrevealed two vessels in an upright position, and fragments of about six oreight others, among which was a fragment of fine red Samian ware, decorated with two parallel bands. Among them was one vessel ofRoman Salop ian ware, with narrow neck and handle, and one of bluish-black Upchurch ware. There were also some rusty iron nails. Someparticulars of this discovery were published in the Bromley Record ofJune, 1864. There can be no doubt that these relics mark the site of aRomano-British burial ground. It is an especially interesting fact as aproof that this particular spot was inhabited by the Romans. A fewfragments of Norman pottery were found among the old foundations whenthe new chancel was added to the Parish Church.
The Manor.
The oldest historical records, in which Bromley is mentioned, relateto the Manor. Hasted, in his History of Kent, says :_" Ethelbert, Kingof Kent, gave to Bishop Eardulph and the Church of Rochester, land inBromley containing six sulings. King Edgar, in the ninth year of hisreign, anno 967, granted to St. Andrew, and the Church of Rochester, certain land at the place commonly known by the name .LEt Bromleage, containing ten hides, called by the Kentish Men sulings, with all libertiesand emoluments whatsoever, excepting the repelling invasions, and therepairing of bridges and fortifications, which privileges were granted onaccount of the great price which Bishop Alfstan had paid for this land, being no less than eighty mares of purest gold, six pounds of fine silver, and thirty mares of gold besides to the King's praefect.
"King Ethelred, son of Edgar, on some dispute with the Bishop ofRochester, laid waste the lands belonging to his See, and in 987 gave tohis minister, Aethelsine (by whose advice he had taken several estatesfrom it) ten plow lands at Bromley. But afterwards he, with muchcontrition, in 998, in the presence of the convent of .Rochester, and his

principal nobility, declared what he had done was by the advice of thisAethelsine; and then restored to the Church six plow lands here, togetherwith the privilege of the woods in the Weald. &c.
U After the Conquest, Odo, the great Bishop of Baieux, tho King'llhalf-brother, seized on the possessions of the Church of Rochester, atBromley, among many other estates belonging to it, but Archbishop Lan-franc did not suffer him to keep them long; for he recovered them, in thesolemn assembly of the whole country, held on this occasion, by the King'scommand, at Pinenden Heath, in 1076, and afterwards restored them toBishop Gundulph, and the Church of St. Andrew, which donation wasconfirmed by Archbishop Anselm and several of his successors. In thereign of King Edward the Confessor, Bromley continued to be estimatedat six sulings. Whether the whole of them came into the hands of theBishop of Baieux I do not find; but it is certain only three of themreturned after the above adjudication to the Church of Rochester.Accordingly this estate is thus entered, under the general title of theBishop of Rochester's lands in the sur,ey of Domesday, taken in the year1080.
"In Bromlei hundred the same Bishop (of Rochester) holdsBromlei. It was taxed at six sulings in the time of KingEdward the Confessor, and now at three. The arable land is13 carucates. "In demesne there are now two carucates, and30 villeins, with 26 borderers, having II carucates. There isone mill of four shillings, and two acres of meadow. Woodfor the pannage of 100 hogs. In the time of King Edwardthe Confessor, and afterwards, it was worth 12 pounds and 10shillings, now 18 pounds, and yet it yields 21 pounds all buttwo shillings."
The Manor app.ears to have remained in the possession of the Bishopsof Rochester up till the time of the great rebellion, when the parliamentp'\ssed an ordinance, October 9th, 1646, for the abolition of Archbishopsand Bishops and for vesting their lands in possession of trustees, to bedisposed of according to the appointment of both houses; and another(November 16th) for the sl1.1eof them, to satisfy the debts due from theState upon the public faith. In consequence of which the Manor ofBromley, with its appurtenances, as part possessions of the bishopric ofRochester, was sold in 1648, to Augustine Skinner, for £5,665 lIs. lid.,in which situation it remained till the restoration of Charles'II., in 1660,
