Chapter FUN? Is your chapter having FUN? We recently got a chance to ride along with Chapter J on a ride to a mystery location for a great picnic. They have a grill that can be pulled behind a bike. Ron & Jan Smith had more stuff in the trunk of their side car than I thought would fit in a side car. It was a great ride led by Asst. Chapter Directors Bill & Deb Warblow. We ended up at a roadside picnic shelter. Waiting for us was Chapter Directors Jeff & Terri Curtis with the pull behind grill trailer with the charcoal ready light and ready to cook some great burgers. We were probably there for at least 3 hours and had a great time with friends. If your chapter isn’t having that kind of FUN please consider being that person who comes up with an idea like this and get something going at your chapter? It only takes one person with one idea to get things started and that one person could be YOU!

See you at the RALLY!

Season of summer,

GWRRA Rider Education has created a new range for the Advanced Rider Course, including shortening it from ten exercises down to seven. The reason why this was done is so that the focus on our learning would be on the top three concerns of cornering, swerving, and stopping. This allows for a smaller range of only 100 ft x 200 ft with 40 ft at each end for run off. The Trike Rider Course will be looked at later this year.

At the Rider Education forum during Wing Ding, emphasis was placed on the retired master program and the honorary master program. A retired master wishes to retire at their highest level, and submits N.33A. Thus, they will not go up or down again in the future and will hold that level permanently. This is for those of us who will never be able to update our levels due to such reasons as permanent health conditions.

The honorary master program is for those who still want to continue in the levels program even though they can’t currently meet all of the level requirements. Someone who has had surgery and may take over a year to recover enough to drive a motorcycle may fit this category. The N.33 must be completed with the assistance of us as District Educators because this agreement states that you will do other things as a substitute for the activity you cannot complete. This can be as simple as agreeing to help at the Rider Ed tables at the rally and wingless weekend, working at a Motorist Awareness event, and assisting with special Rider Education projects. This must be updated every three years.

We were also informed that the allowance for back to back range only rider courses ends on 12-31-21. After that you must go back to taking a classroom and range every other time.

The High Side seminar is no longer a separate seminar under Rider Education but has been combined with Riding in Mountains, Hills, and Curves.

A Rider Course Instruction Training will be taking place in Huntsville, Alabama, in mid-October. Please be aware that there are Send Your Instructor to Camp Funds available to assist with traveling and training expenses such as hotel rooms and mileage. We will be placing a jar for this fund at the Rider Education table at the Michigan Rally in the hopes that those of you who have expressed an interest will see that Michigan is more than willing to assist you in this endeavor!

NEWS FROM THE NORTH

Greetings Friends, It’s been several months since we’ve contributed to the District Newsletter. We’re not going to apologize because it’s not from a lack of interest, but simply a lack of time. It’s a two-edged sword when you are both Chapter Directors and Assistant District Directors. You want to do a good job at both and that demands a lot of time and travel. As you well know our North Section is very large and our chapters are spread out quite far; all the way to Sault Ste Marie, Canada throughout the Upper Peninsula and across the northern edge of State Rt. 10 from Bay City to Ludington. Distance was only matched by the number of shutdowns during the pandemic. Covid-19 put quite a damper on Gatherings, Anniversary Parties and travel into Canada; much to our chagrin. Now that the pandemic restrictions are loosening, we find that another riding month for Michigan has come and gone, and summer is quickly sliding by. However, we won't let it slip away without having a boat-load of fun during the month of August. This month holds some extraordinary opportunities for good riding and many other events to keep us busier than usual. Members will be riding to some of our safari locations as well as doing our Rally rides. That’s not to say that our North Section riders have not been riding and collaborating throughout the pan-demic. We were proud leaders at the re-opening Gathering for Chapter Q in the Soo on June 8th. It was our pleasure to swear in Director Mike Raths and his team of Frank King, JoAnn Landini, Sandy Lahti, and Travis Kravis. Kudos to them; because, they never gave up on getting their chapter functional after waiting almost two years to bring it into reality. We’re also proud of Mike and Carol Rainey for being awarded the Merit Award for Outstanding Directors during Wing Ding. It was our pleasure to nominate them and several others around the Section for their Senior status awards. Those are awarded to Directors, Treasurers and Ride Coor-dinators who have served gallantly for two years or more. In other Chapter news, Chapter K2 has been riding to dinner at various locations on the first Thursday of the month and using that as their Gathering. Chapters Z and Q are hosting each other back and forth on dinner rides. Of course, Mike has been busy selling over 2,000 tickets on his own; what an accomplishment! Chapter Y had to move their Gathering Day to Monday instead of Tuesday due to the limited availability of their Gath-ering site, Fred’s in Roscommon. They are still meeting weekly for lunch or dinner rides and doing ticket sales when they can. Chapter J2 has been busy attending weekly Bike Nights hosted by WUPS radio station, camp-ing, doing parades, handing out hotdogs for ticket donations at the local grocery store and selling tickets throughout the local communities. During the WUPS bike night held at Holeshot Harley in Mt. Pleasant, Chapter J2 was offered an opportunity to sell tickets and promote the Motorist Awareness Program (MAP) at the Marion Vehicle Show, August 7th. Organizers, Gary and Julie, we're so inspired by our charity to help kids through the Rainbow Connection and our determination to do outreach for Motorist Awareness that they offered us a free and highly visible spot. How could we turn down that offer? So, we asked for an additional 1500 tickets, and Julie assures us we will get rid of each and every one of them. However, we've already been dipping into them to meet the de-mand at bike night. So, there are a couple of ideas for your chapter to “Make a Difference”.

While bike nights have been a bit demanding on our J2 member’s time, they have been worth the additional ticket sales that we have made. We've also managed to promote our chapter to a couple of prospective mem-bers. We were a bit anxious about getting involved with the Bike Night effort to promote Motorist Awareness. Many attendees are Harley riders who seldom wear helmets and ride after drinking at the event. However, the MAP is exactly the reason we were invited to attend the bike Nights by the WUPS host, Tammy. She saw that these are the very people that we should be reaching out to through the Motorist Awareness Program. In addi-tion to promoting Safe riding, the venue has also worked out pretty good in our favor with the ticket sales. It is a win/win situation for kids, the riders, the promoters of Bike Night and for us. Also in our favor is the central location of the District Rally location. It’s being held in St Louis this year which makes it easy for those who can only drive in for the day. Even if you can only come for one day, you should still register to get the discounted rate that allows you to come and go at your leisure, allows you to take some classes, witness the Crash Scene Response Seminar and gets you the armband they will be awarding door prizes from. If you have never attended a District Rally, it is a great chance to meet new friends! You’ll also want to come and check out the opening and closing. That’s where we get to show off our Chapter and Section spirit, and see who the big winner of the raffle is. Speaking of friends….the word is out that the Canadian border is about to open soon. Let’s hear it for get-ting to see our dear friends from Chapter On-H. Watch for plans to join them as soon as they, or we, can cross. It’s been too long without their hugs and great sense of humor. Knights of the Hatchet 2022 can’t come soon enough for those of you who really want to have a genuine Canadian GW experience. You’re going to love it! We as ADDs certainly love taking our new members from around the Section and District to get initiated. We also love being part of a group that has formed such strong bonds of friendship throughout our great North Section. We invite those within our section and from around our District to consider making the ride north. There’s no time like fall to enjoy our beautiful scenery and hook up over a meal or bonfire with one of our friendly members. In the meantime, we hope to see you along the way at a Safari site, the Marion Vehicle show or at Rally. Ride Safe friends!

Respectfully for Safety, FUN and Friendship, Phil and Char Smock, North Section ADDs

What a last year and a half, with the lock downs and the issues with doing face to face training. With things loosening up, we have completed some face-to-face training.

Joy and I presented Riding in the Heat at Wing Ding. It sure was fun to be back in the classroom with people in it. Having the face-to-face interaction was great.

With all that being said, we have some great training opportunities at the Michigan Rally in August.

What an adventure you can have because of a Safari Stop.

A quick weekend trip, and due to our son wanting to join us up at the family cabin in the Upper Peninsula, we had to opt for four wheels instead of two. We decided to go to Curtis, Michigan for their 4th of July parade that started at 12:30 pm. Since we headed north with plenty of time to spare, we thought, “Hey, we’re so close why not catch the Bear Park Safari Stop north of Newberry, Michigan.” Shortly before reaching Bear Park we noticed nicely paved county road 455, must be a shortcut back to Curtis, Michigan. As we took this beautiful road we thought, we need to come back and ride this on the bike. But, about that time, two miles in, discovered the pavement ends to a good gravel road. Well, that’s not so bad, nice graded road for the next 5 or 6 miles to Bass Lake Campground. On we go, our rules; can’t turn around or ask directions. Shortly after passing Bass Lake Campground it soon turned into more of a sand two track instead of a road. On we go, our rules: can’t turn around or ask directions. All the time, realizing we really should have stopped and bought gas back in Newberry. When that situation came up, all that was said was “thought we’d buy it on the way back through Newberry.” Note to self, always stop for gas before taking a shortcut. By this time the two track is getting pretty rough and seems more of a logging road. We decided it was time to check our location as we’d been driving 20 miles so far. As it turns out, there is no cell signal 20 miles in on county road 455. Why didn’t we put a road map in the car? On we go, what else can we do? Our rules; can’t turn around or ask directions. At this point our son is getting pretty nervous as I had a bad knee and Terri has a bad foot. It’d be up to our son to push us to the gas station. Oh well, good thing he’s young. Finally, after 26 miles, out we pop onto Highway 77. What relief! We find a gas station and fill up. Now we’re on to Curtis, Michigan for the parade. We creep into Curtis, Michigan at 12:29. We were the last vehicle through before they closed off the road for the parade. What an adventure. We’ll be talking about this for years to come. This is just one Safari Ride adventure so make sure you get out on a Safari Ride and make your own adventure. You never know where a shortcut will take you.

P.S. Throw a map in your vehicle for emergencies

It has been a while since I have written anything for the newsletter so I am a little out of practice. It is so nice to have our activities starting to come back and being able to get together again.

Randy and I took advantage of socializing again by heading off to Wing Ding in July. We had a really good time and spent a little money at the vendor show even though it was smaller than normal. We were also able to spend a little time catching up with one of the vendors that we have de-veloped a friendship with over the years of Wing Ding and International motorcycle shows. They were extremely hap-py that Wing Ding could be moved back to the July date as they were not able to attend the past few of years. We saw a lot of people from other states and spent some time meeting new people as well. We attended a few seminars, and spent some time riding new roads and seeing new sights. All in all, Wing Ding was a lot of fun.

We are now making plans for our own District Rally and looking forward to the opportunity to do some of the same things with all our friends and family here in Michigan. We hope that you will be able to attend and have fun as well. There are many activities that will be going on with rides, seminars, games, dinner rides, and the opportunity to get out and see people again.

Now just a reminder that we are asking for donations for the Chinese Auction. Items can be new or used, we just ask that they are clean. There is no minimum value as we will group items together to make a more appealing auction item. Items can be dropped off any day of the rally, up to the start of the Chinese Auction on Saturday morning.

Hope that you have all had a great summer and have been able to get out and do some riding.

Stay safe and hope to see you soon.
