Thursday, 22nd September 2016 Term 3 Week 9 Dear Parents and Caregivers, He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa FANTASTIC! 71 % OF CHILDREN AT KENAKENA SCHOOL ARE REPRESENTED AT
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES THIS WEEK.
Thanks for keeping the important home-school partnership strong.
Teachers report a positive response from parents on the way we have explained the
variation between their children’s achievement in relation to the New Zealand
Curriculum Levels and the National Education Standards.
If you came away feeling a little uncertain about your child’s report in relation to the
National Education Standards, have another read of the information sent home last
week. It might help to reflect on the information in there now that you have attended
the parent-teacher conference.
Thanks to your children’s teachers for conducting the conferences so well at the end
of two very long days.
TOURNAMENT OF MINDS NEW ZEALAND FINAL
This Saturday Kenakena School Tournament of Minds team will compete in the New
Zealand final after winning the Regional Competition in Palmerston North. The Team
of Sean Moody, Alex Linstrom, Sam Teitelbaum, Rachel Cowie, Zara Feaunati, Parker
Lynch and Keira Lewis will compete in the Science and Technology Section,
competing against regional teams from throughout New Zealand. “Good luck!” to KK2
for the Nationals!
Thanks to Kenakena teachers Kim Kelly and Tatia Downer for managing our teams’
involvement in this year’s tournament.
NETBALL FINALS
Kenakena has two teams in the Kapiti Netball Finals this weekend, following the
event’s postponement last weekend. The Kauri and Rata teams play at 9am on
Saturday at Te Atiawa Courts. Come down and support our teams. Go Kenakena!
Kenakena Matai has won Third Place following a default from Raumati South School,
who they were to play off for third and fourth.
END OF WINTER SPORTS SEASON
Kenakena School has entered sports teams in the local netball and hockey
competitions over the winter season. Our kids have really enjoyed their participation
in these sports, where teams have been well managed, organised and coached. This
is down to the parents, grandparents and ex-students who have fulfilled those
organisational roles this season. The school netball teams have been overseen by
Dee Ashby along with a great team of people fulfilling the roles for each team. Our
hockey teams have been overseen by Alastair Morrison, who has done a great job!
I know there have also been a number of parents involved in coaching their children’s
teams in a range of other sports through the local clubs. I would like to thank you all.
Children would not be able to participate without your involvement and commitment.
SUNHATS
The Board of Trustees has decided to phase out the current school-owned sunhats
due to the cost of replacing so many that go missing each year.
The phasing out process will mean that Years 0-1 will need to bring their own wide-
brimmed hat to school. By the time these students are in Year 8, the whole school
will be wearing their own hats.
Any older students have the option of bringing their own hats but they must be a
wide-brimmed style that protects the ears and back of the neck.
Please note: caps do not provide enough protection and are not acceptable.
Students not wearing an appropriate hat will need to stay in the shade
Remember sunburn = skin damage!

TIAKI UPDATE Most classes in the school have been trialling the Traffic Light behaviour system in their classes for several weeks now. If you saw the information in our newsletter a couple of weeks ago you would have seen the steps that make up the traffic light system. Each child needs to achieve the Go Getter experience by making good choices and staying on green on their class traffic light. The Go Getter is attained by not missing being signed off on the chart more than once. If a child gets on the thinking zone three times in one week, orange or red they miss the Go Getter that week. If this happens once they still have time to make good choices and gain the Go Getter reward. If they miss out twice they will not attend the Go Getter experience.
Kowhai Syndicate ran a fabulous Go Getter experience last Friday. All students that made good choices attended a syndicate dance party (complete with strobe lights!). Those that didn’t achieve this reward spent time with Mrs Nees. She planned a social skills lesson where students reflected on their behaviour, discussed and modelled expectations and set goals for the next few weeks. The aim of these sessions is to
encourage students to take more responsibility for their behaviour and think about positive changes they could make to improve their behaviour in the classroom and in the playground.
Here are some pictures of the movers and shakers in Kowhai.
Other syndicates will also be running Go Getter experiences this week for those that gained the required number of ‘sign offs’ on their class chart. Kauri Syndicate: Students have a range of activities to choose from including playing sport, watching a movie or using devices. Kahikatea Syndicate: Students are having a movie afternoon with the option of wearing PJs or Onesies (always a favourite!). Those not participating in the Go Getters will be working on an activity based around Tiaki. Koromiko Syndicate: Students are having a movie afternoon. Kowhai-iti Syndicate: Children in this team are going to play in the sand and build sandcastles at the beach.
All round these Go Getter experiences are a wonderful way to end the term. Hopefully
those that missed out will work hard at making good choices and ensure they are part
of the next one!
Poppy Lindsay from Room 1 wrote this story:
For the past five weeks I’ve stayed on green so I went to go-getters. I went to the
blanket forts. I worked with five year olds but I didn’t mind and it was fun especially
when it kept on breaking. We built it in different ways all the time.
NOTICE FROM EX-STUDENT Hi Kenakena families, My name is Grace Lindsay, and I am a former Kenakena student, currently in year 13 at Paraparaumu College.
I have been accepted as a Rotary exchange student for 2017, and I will spend the year living in Brive-la-Gaillarde, in Southern France. I have been working and saving hard to pay for this, many of you may know me from my job at the Kenakena 4 square. I am asking you to please click the following link (one click to vote) and vote for me. This is for an AMP scholarship, and every single vote helps. http://scholarshipsignup.amp.co.nz/place-vote/139319/2292809/ Thanks very much for your help :) Grace Lindsay (big sister to Poppy in room 1) (Note - Poppy wrote the Go-Getters story above)
CHANGES DUE TO LARGE NEW ENTRANT ENROLMENT
To ensure we are able to keep a manageable student-teacher ratio in our New Entrant
classes, we are employing Mrs Jo Weir to work with a group of 15 children from Rooms
3 and 10 on their literacy programme from 8.55am to 12.30pm, Monday to Thursday in
Term 4. To achieve this, I have banked some accumulated staffing through our roll-
growth allocation. The children will work in Room 5 for the morning programme.
Parents of the children chosen for this programme will all have been informed by the
end of today.
It is worth noting that, under the Minister of Education’s proposed ‘Global Budget’,
additional roll-growth staffing allocation within a school year is unlikely.
NEW ENTRANT NUMBERS: LOOKING FORWARD TO 2017
It is important for us to monitor our future enrolments of five year olds as it assists us
with planning for teaching spaces and resources. If you have a child turning five who
has yet to enrol at Kenakena or if you have friends, relatives or colleagues who intend
to enrol their children here in the next two years, we would like to know so we can
record their children’s names on our enrolments list.
THIS IS THE FINAL WEEK OF TERM 3. SCHOOL FINISHES AT 3.00PM AS USUAL
TOMORROW.
Enjoy the additional time you may get to spend with your children over the School
Holidays. If you are traveling, be safe.

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Apologising to your kids
We asked John Cowan what he's
traded his years for
Mainly, I’ve traded years for memories. Even though I have increasing difficulty
remembering where I’ve parked my car and couldn’t tell you what I had for lunch, I
do have more memories, very precious memories, which have cost me decades to
obtain.
With 'older-male brain shrinkage' an increasing reality, my brain isn’t the safest place
for storing these memories, but fortunately some are stacked away in photo albums
and on shaky home videos (ask me to show you the one of my wife on the inner
tube, but you can’t tell her you’ve seen it).
Better still, many of the best memories are stored in my kids’ heads, where I think
they’ll stay safe and fresh long after the photos have faded and my brain has turned
to compost. I’m delighted how often their conversations turn to, “Remember
when…” Many of the events seemed so insignificant to me at the time and yet are
now retold as if they were hugely significant events. Of course they delight in
recounting my crimes (“Remember when you swore when your car got towed away!”
– I’m sure they make half of it up).
The little memories are actually the big memories.
NO SUSHI ON FRIDAYS
Please note that there will no sushi available on Fridays for the remainder of this
term.
