JUDI BILCLIFF VISITS

New Zealand author and poet Judi Bilcliff visited Kenakena to entertain our students,

talk about her writing and to meet 9 Years Old Imogen Rehu, who has had one of her

poems published in the ‘Celebrating our Talented Young Writers’ section of Judi’s

book, Granny Goes Bungy Jumping. Judi captivated our kids with her energetic and

engaging presentation and made Imogen feel very proud to be a published author.

BYOD UPTAKE FOR STUDENTS YEARS 5-8 We have had a very enthusiastic response to the Bring Your Own Devices option we have advertised through the Whakaaro Hou Trust and have been pleased to have questions from parents about the BYOD opportunity. It is an opportunity, not compulsory. The Trust will have up to four roll-out dates throughout each year, the next one for this year is timed for late October. We will keep you informed about this. Some students are bringing devices to school that they already own. Some parents are purchasing devices for their children from places other than through the trust and that’s absolutely fine. The trust along with some businesses offers payment over time. The benefit of purchasing through the trust is the combined insurance package. Basically, we’re trying to get under way with student-owned devices coming to school to supplement the devices the school owns. We expect that, over time, most Years 5-8 students will have their own device, and we’re trying to make this accessible through the Whakaaro Hou Trust.

PMP HELPERS NEEDED

Kenakena School runs a Perceptual Motor Programme for the New Entrants which is of huge benefit to not only the children’s physical well-being but also aids their development in literacy, numeracy and social skills. However to run the programme we need adult helpers. If you can spare 1 ½ hours (8.55 – 10.30) on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday please contact the office and help keep this worthwhile programme running. Thanks, Maxine West PMP Coordinator Junior Winter Tournament Last Wednesday each Kahikatea student took part in the Junior Winter Tournament. The purpose of this tournament is to encourage students to try a new sport and enjoy an afternoon competing against our other local schools. It’s hard to emphasise enough how proud I was of the children I spent time with at the netball courts during the tournament. Every child I saw representing Kenakena School was so well behaved. I didn’t see any examples of poor sportsmanship. What I did see was kids cheering each other on, students remaining positive, children showing awesome team work and, most importantly, displaying resilience when losing and being humble after a win. What fabulous examples of Tiaki!! Well done Kahikatea! Thanks so much to our amazing parents for taking the time out of their busy schedules to supervise our teams! We so appreciate it! NETBALL

KK 2 showed awesome teamwork!

Keelan Magalogo showing awesome skills in the shooting circle.

Jacob Chappell was a stunning defender for his team

RIPPA The children who participated in the rippa tournament were fantastic ambassadors for Kenakena School, again showing some of our school Tiaki values: teamwork, resilience, aiming for excellence, and showing respect to the refs, coaches, the opposition and fellow team mates. I was very proud of the children from our syndicate but also very proud of the year 7 and 8 students who helped out on the day as refs to fill in for some missing college students. A huge thank you to the parent helpers who coached the teams.

HOCKEY

Two of our five Kenakena hockey teams

The winter tournament allowed many children to have a taste of a different sport and these children chose hockey. Kenakena entered five teams and all displayed great sportsmanship. They were a fabulous bunch to represent our school. Their enthusiasm was obvious and many of them are now wanting hockey to be their chosen sport for winter. A huge thank you to the parents who supported us, without that we would not be able to give the children these experiences and options.

TIAKI NEWS

Staff at Kenakena are enjoying the opportunity to spend their playground duty time looking for students who are displaying Tiaki values. It is very rewarding to see so many of our students showing many of the values such as respect, responsibility, teamwork and resilience. It is often very difficult to pick just a few stand out students! Tiaki Lucky Draw Winners for Weeks Three and Four Tiaki cards have been given out over the past two weeks during morning tea and lunch times, sporting events and school assemblies. Ask your child if they have been ‘caught’ displaying Tiaki values and have been given a Tiaki card! Congratulations to Carter Joines Rm 9, Emma Howes Rm 12, Katya Cameron-Bennett Rm 4 and Ngaio Dekker Rm 20. They win the SPN lunch vouchers this time. Awesome effort!!

TIPS FOR PARENTS

The little things are the big things

We’re all looking for the big break, to be successful, to get into the big

league.

Out there, up there, over the rainbow.

Sure – climb, grow, achieve, succeed… it’s good. We wish you all that. But don’t miss what

you already have. In amongst the dirty faces and dirty dishes, right there in the middle of

that noise, mess and tears is the greatest work of your life. To shape lives, to grow hearts

that love and hope, to create the future out of cuddles and kisses.

The little things are the big things.

Where’s your wealth? You’re rich right here.

Where’s your fame? Could it match the place you have in their hearts?

The only thing bigger than what you have right here, right now, in your home, is what these

young lives will grow in to. You’re pouring yourself into their lives, and all the lives they will

Page 9: KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441 ...kenakena.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/... · accessible through the Whakaaro Hou Trust. NZEI AND PPTA PAID UNION MEETINGS

touch, and the lives that will flow from them. All that comes from what you have right now –

all that you are doing right now.

If you have the privilege to be a mum or a dad, to be a coach, to be whānau, you’ve already

made it to the top. This is life. This is being rich. The little things are the big things.
