Kensington fifth grader, Hogan Kern, created a plan for a dodgeball tournament to

raise money to fight childhood brain cancer. Hogan shared his creative idea with

our Kensington K-Kids club and the plan was put into action. “Prayers from

Maria” is the non-profit organization who will receive donations from this exciting

event. http://prayersfrommaria.org/

The fundraising tournament will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 10:00-1:00 at the

Rocky River Middle School Gymnasium. All funds will be donated to Prayers from Maria.

Donations can be made on line or at the tournament. Teams will consist of 6 players and

students who do not have a team will be assigned to a team. Admission will be $2.00 and the

player fee will be $5.00.

Student placement for 2014-2015: As we begin planning for next school year,

we look at many aspects when matching students with teachers and classmates.

We look at the make-up of the classroom, including behaviors, academic strengths,

and social/emotional needs for the entire class. Our teachers work carefully to

evaluate all possible considerations to ensure classroom assignments are balanced and fair.

Please trust our process in ensuring that your child will be considered for his or her best possible

placement. If you feel that you have a unique perspective that needs to be considered, we

encourage parents to share with us your child’s needs with a focus on qualities rather than

specific personnel.

Report Cards and Envelopes: Students will be bringing report cards home on Friday, March

27th

. We encourage families to review and discuss report card progress to celebrate and to set

learning goals for the third quarter. Please return the report card envelope to your child’s

homeroom teacher.

Success Maker: Rocky River K-5 students have home access to SuccessMaker.

This outstanding comouter program provides leveled lessons for students in

reading and math (with necessary system requirements). Your child's username

and passwords are the same as he or she uses while in school. Correct versions of

Adobe Flash, Java and Internet Explorer must be installed on your computer. Directions can be

found here: http://www.rrcs.org/SuccessMakeratHome.aspx

Each session of reading or math lasts about 15 minutes, depending on grade and subject.

New State Assessments: Ohio’s state wide assessment dates for end of the year

exams (EOY) are listed below. These assessment dates are important and all

students are encouraged to attend on these days to prevent makeup testing. Ohio’s

Next Generation Assessments (NGA) take the place of the former Ohio

Achievement Assessment and will measure if children have mastered key concepts learned

during this year. Please note that our grade 3 students participate in the Reading OAA on April

22nd

and only the Ohio Next Generation Assessments for math. Students in grades 4 and 5 will

only participate in the new Next Generation Assessments.

Cyclops Sale at Kensington: Fourth grade students, Mallerie Havemann,

Annabelle Nikonchik, and Anna Kunde created a creative way for a fundraiser to

support our Kensington library. The girls worked to create, market, and sell Cyclops

crafts for students to purchase each morning last week. The sale has been popular

with students and staff!

Kensington PTA Resident Artist Project: Fourth grade students will have an

exciting art experience. This year, students are excited to work with Angela Oster, a

Rocky River resident and graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art for our annual

fourth grade mural project. Angela is a renowned artist and was also a 2009 Creative

Workforce Fellow. Students will be creating a large whimsical water color painting of a boat on

a lake, with each child creating his or her own creature to float in the depths of the water.

Angela will be arranging the piece and creating the boat and water background. It will be framed

Students with Disabilities

The Rocky River City School District is required to identify, locate and evaluate all children, birth through age twenty-one, within the district,

with disabilities. The term “disability” includes such conditions as hearing impairments, visual impairments, specific learning disabilities,

behavior disabilities, developmental disabilities, speech and language disabilities, orthopedic and other health disabilities caused by such conditions as epilepsy or cardiac illness and other severe or multiple disabilities.

Although many school age disabled children are identified and currently being served by the Rocky River City School District, pre-school

children, ages 3-5, with disabilities may be unidentified because parents may not be aware that programs and services are now available through

the public schools. Community members can help us with this important effort. If you know of a child in the Rocky River City School District with a disability who is not presently attending school or receiving services from another agency, please contact Jennifer Norman, Director of

Pupil Services, at the Rocky River City School District Board Office, (440) 356-6006.

All Annual Notices are available on the district website-www.rrcs.org
