Directly in front of the Center on a circle of pavement, Farmer has sculpted 10 tons of compacted wet sand into a montage of portraits and scenes from Kentucky’s rich history. Some of the artist’s design includes Abraham Lincoln, bourbon, horses, Daniel Boone and even Natural Bridge! This exhibit tells about the history, formation and location of these fascinating and rare works of nature. Displays of original Agate specimens as well as finished jewelry by numerous Kentucky artists, round out this exciting exhibit.

This exhibit explains how these unusual agates, found primarily in five central Kentucky counties, are formed. Numerous lapidary and jewelry techniques for turning this rare stone into elegant jewelry are also shown via photos and text.

GALLERY EXHIBITION “225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky’s History”

Through Sept. 23, 2017

The Center’s gallery exhibit “225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky’s History” displays the work of 51 Kentucky artists. Kentucky has always cherished its history and the preservation of Kentucky stories, places and traditions has shaped its culture today.

These works capture the essence of Kentucky – including its historical places, people, events, state commerce, agriculture and the state’s unique flora and fauna. Accompanied by written stories and histories in each artist’s words, this exhibit entices the viewer visually and verbally.

July 1– Saturday

Steve Wiggins Demonstrates Lino-Cut Relief Printmaking at Kentucky Artisan Center

On Saturday, July 1, Lexington artist Stephen Wiggins will demonstrate the steps of transferring an image for a linocut block, carving and inking the block to proof and print the final design onto paper. Wiggins will also print onto cotton fabric. Wiggins has been drawing since he was a child and worked with acrylics and oils before coming to printmaking. He teaches printmaking in Lexington as a member of the Bluegrass Printmakers Co-op.

Elizabeth Foley Demonstrates Monotype Printmaking at Kentucky Artisan Center On Saturday, July 8, Elizabeth Foley, of Louisville, will demonstrate how she creates and prints her one-of-a-kind monotypes from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center. Foley taught art at the Sayre School in Lexington for 20 years and she exhibits her artwork throughout the U. S.

Free Guided Gallery Tours of Exhibits at Kentucky Artisan Center The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided tours through the center’s gallery exhibit, “225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky’s History.” Tours are at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.

Berea Welcome Center Carvers at Kentucky Artisan Center Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques on Saturday, July 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center.

Nick Baute of Hound Dog Press to Demonstrate Printmaking at Kentucky Artisan Center On Saturday, July 22, printmaker Nick Baute, co-owner of Hound Dog Press, a full service letterpress shop in Louisville, will demonstrate printmaking from 10:30 to 3:30 at the Center.

In operation since 2008, Hound Dog Press specializes in custom invitations, greeting cards, stationery, posters, art prints and design. All the press’s finished works are produced on vintage letterpress equipment that ranges from 1892-1960. Nick and co-owner Robert Ronk, handset metal and wood letters and hand carve wood and linoleum blocks to create their illustrations.

July 29– Saturday

Marta Dorton to Demonstrate Collograph Printmaking at Kentucky Artisan Center On Saturday, July 29, artist Marta Dorton, of Lexington, will demonstrate collograph printmaking techniques from 10:30 to 3:30 at the Center.

Dorton states, “After 10 years of printmaking, I still marvel at the surprise on the paper as I pull off the print. I apply ink or paint onto the plate I have created – and run it through the press, each time creating a one-of-a-kind print. I love the planned and the unexpected outcomes.”
