Greetings Fellow Volunteers,

to address you as your new State Chairman for Kentucky Ducks

Unlimited. I hail from Madisonville, Kentucky and have been a

Ducks Unlimited Volunteer for over 25 years.

The spring banquet season is near an end, and the Kentucky DU team continues to power forward! Multiple chapters have shattered their old records and are already planning for future events. As I have stated many times, with all we have accomplished we still have much we need to do. And for DU to continue to be successful we need everyone to maintain their focus and keep doing what you’re doing! We need to continue to look outside of the box and look for new and exciting fundraising ideas. Most importantly, we need to continue to build strong committees and add to our volunteer numbers, while maintaining event efficiency and effectiveness. I look forward to serving you over the next 2 years. Please feel free to contact me if your Chapter needs additional support or resources as our fall banquet season approaches. Your District Chairs and Regional Directors will be contacting you soon to arrange our summer District Workshops. DID YOU KNOW?

Ducks Unlimited’s #1 conservation focus area – the Prairie Pothole Region – provides North America with more than 75% of our waterfowl population. In addition to the prairies, DU performs vital habitat conservation work in all major breeding areas, including The Western Boreal Forest, Great Lakes Region, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and Atlantic

Canada.

CHARTER VARSITY CHAPTER

OWEN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

Kentucky’s newest chapter. A first of its kind!

Kentucky has a new chapter in Owenton, KY. It is the first high school chapter in the state. They now have

their charter and are KY097. Austin Riggs, a freshman at Owen County High School, said as soon as he heard

about the Varsity Chapter Program said he wanted to start the first one in the state. He then recruited the

help of Michael Wash, a junior, and went to work. He first got four teachers onboard with the concept and

then went to the principal, Mr. Duane Kline for his approval.

Austin and Michael requested that their DU Varsity chapter be recognized as an official school club starting

the next school year. They soon gained approval of the principal, Mr. Kline. Mr. Kline stated, “I want you

to do it. You sold me on the concept. Now you will need to convince the Owen Co. School Board as well.”

Austin and, his grandfather, Neil Riggs then spoke to the school board about gaining their approval for the

varsity chapter at Owen Co. High School. Austin presented at the next School Board meeting and they were

very receptive to the idea. It was approved. The announcement was made over the PA at school the very

next day. Mr. Kline told the young committee members that the response from the students was

overwhelming. He thought it could be one of their largest clubs in the school.

Congratulations to Austin Riggs and Michael Walsh for seeing an opportunity and making it happen. The

chapter has their first event planned for June 21st. Check for updates on the event calendar at www.ky.ducks.org

for event details, location and times.

Congratulations to Lake Cumberland Chapter!

Congratulations to the Lake Cumberland Chapter for an outstanding 2013-14

fundraising year. Lake Cumberland earned top honors at the 2014 Kentucky Ducks

Unlimited State Convention this year. Their awards included Top Dollar Chapter by

raising over $85,000 for Ducks Unlimited, Top Sponsor Chapter with 104 Sponsors and

Top Efficiency Chapter and a Mallard Flight Award for overall performance. This

Chapter embodies the essence of what it takes to be a top tier chapter. They have

been honored nationally the past several years in the Presidents Top 100 Chapters for

Ducks Unlimited and hope to continue that tradition for 2014. When asked “How to

do you it?” these volunteers respond with the comment of “Successful Chapters work

together and play together”. These volunteers know how to have fun and make it

enjoyable while working to obtain the ultimate goal of supporting Ducks Unlimited

conservation efforts.

MAJOR DONOR ACTION PLAN 2014-15 By Dr. Brian K. Priddle

Kentucky Major Donor Chairman

GOALS FOR 2014 = 8-4-2

Eight new Life Sponsors, four Major Sponsor upgradesand two new Feather Society

commitments

EVENINGS OF CONSERVATION

The purpose of these events is to provide an opportunity

to gather Major Donor prospects and educate them on the Ducks Unlimited conservation

mission and opportunities forsupport. The focus is on DU’s international conservation

plan, regional and local focus areas, prior accomplishments and the importance of private

support. Emphasis is placed on to DU’s on the ground work to conserve critical wetland

habitat. The goals are

to identify and cultivate new major gift prospects and to steward current Major Donor

prospects. Evenings of Conservation are designed as a first-contact cultivation event

separate from our traditional event system and there is no fundraising done at the

event (no auctions or raffles). The program is informational in nature and a means to

engage potential major gift supporters.

Make your commitment to SAVE THE BEST for Kentucky ducks.

Contact Dr. Brian K. Priddle at [email protected] or Mike Checkett at

[email protected] to invest for the future of Kentucky ducks and save the prairie

breeding areas. It is a conservation fact that more money in the ground means more birds

in the skies!

Kentucky DU adds 2nd Greenwing Trailer

Kentucky Ducks Unlimited has added a 2nd Greenwing trailer to our youth program. The trailer

went on its maiden event to Owensboro, KY. Steve Kiester, West KY Regional Chairman, was

asked to join Billy Shain and Two Rivers Buddy Ball to support a fishing tournament for special

needs children at Panther Creek Park in Owensboro, KY on May 17.

The event was great! The children had an opportunity to do something most of them had never

experienced. The opportunity to go fishing for a day! The children all had a great time and

enjoyed a day in the great outdoors. Their facial expressions and words of gratitude were

priceless.

There were approximately 70+ children who attended the event which ran from 9:00 AM to

12:00 noon. Special thanks to the volunteers who attended and helped. Jennifer Shelton and

Danielle(Pita} Kamuf manned the archery station. Sharon Kamuf and her son Anthony Kamuf

worked with the children at the BB gun station. Beth Stewart did relief work on various stations.

Steve Kiester made sure everything ran smooth and took pictures for the event. "Ginny,”

Steve’s lab, spent the morning bringing smiles to the faces of both parents and children. Special

Thanks to Buddy Ball for inviting us to this great event. The new Greenwing trailer is road ready

for events throughout the state. Thanks again to the volunteers who supported this great

event!
