MOUNT Kilimanjaro Mount Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", is a dormant volcanic mountain in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa. The first recorded ascent to the summit of the mountain was by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. The mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination.

Option 1: JOIN a Community PROJECT

LOCAL COMMUNITY PROJECT Travel Places are proud to partner with The Manji Foundation who firmly believe that education is the key to a better life and has for many years now, concentrated its efforts towards ensuring children are empowered with this important tool – education. They believe that an educated child will not only change one's own life, but also the lives of one's family and those around them. Besides providing financial support from their own personal resources, they take much delight in spending quality time with these children to help build their confidence and encourage them to excel with their aspirations to succeed. As much as Travel Places would love to organise your voluntary work with our partnered charity, if you already have another charity in mind you are obviously free to work with them instead.

Overnight at Park View Lodge

Day 2 Morning meet with your head guide

Depart for Moshi (approx 45 mins drive) and register at the Marangu gate. Begin your trek through lush, undisturbed forest where you may be lucky enough to see Colombus monkeys. Option 2: climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

Day 3 The climb continues after breakfast today

From Mandara Huts the trail climbs steeply through a short stretch of forest, soon emerging into grassy moorland. On a clear day, you will catch your first glimpse of Kibo, the summit cone of Kilimanjaro, and the jagged second peak Mawenzi. You’ll climb steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heather and occasional groundsel which can reach heights of up to 5 metres. After around 4 to 6 hours walking you will reach the hut complex at Horombo

Overnight at Horombo Huts

Day 4 Start the day with a lie in!

You will be staying at Horombo Huts for a second night and therefore do not need to pack! This extra day and night will aid your acclimatisation and is therefore very important in preparation for your summit attempt. The day will be spent hiking towards the seldom visited base of Mawenzi Peak, passing Zebra Rocks en route. The landscape feels more alpine here and there is a greater sense of peacefulness than in other locations on this route. Trekking time approximately 4 to 5 hours. Overnight at Horombo Huts

Page 7: Kenya - Travel Places · The Masai Mara National Reserve is a large game reserve in Narok County, Kenya. It is named in honour of the Masai people (the ancestral inhabitants of the

Option 2: climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

Day 5 After breakfast, continue your ascent

Today the landscape changes as you head into the alpine desert, towards the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi where the terrain is much more open and there is a palpable sense of high altitude wilderness. You will arrive in camp for lunch giving you the afternoon to rest before your summit attempt.

Overnight at Mawenzi Camp

Day 6 Around midnight, start the final ascent

Heading for Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for the next six hours, hike by the light of your flashlight. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Gilman's Point but the final hike from Gilman's to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. After summit celebrations you will descend to Kibo Huts to eat before continuing your descent to Horombo Huts. This will seem surprisingly fast. The total time spent walking today is around 14 hours, and the altitude makes the hike long and tiring. so be prepared for a very tough day. Later in the evening enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Overnight at Horombo Huts

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

Kenya – An Epic Adventure! Dear Emily Following the fun filled events of last summer, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you formally for the tremendous contribution made by yourself and the wider Travel Places team, to The Scout Association’s experience of the World Scout Moot in Kenya. Right from the outset, you creative and lively approach to supporting 130 people in an unfamiliar, African environment was invaluable to myself and the wider project team. In summary, one of the main reasons we were impressed with the tender was your enthusiasm and creativity. I also felt that you would be quick to adapt to the wonderful ways of the Scout and work with the management team to reach workable solutions to any problems we faced. To my mind, this is exactly how it turned out. During the event itself, I would struggle to fault travel Places or Twiga Tours. In a challenging and unfamiliar environment the support from such knowledgeable and skilled professionals was invaluable. Also crucial was the rapport that you were able to establish with the contingent members and management team. We were a weird and (at times) wonderful bunch of people with contrasting styles and approaches. Finally, from a personal perspective I would like to say a huge thank you to Matt, Mark and above all yourself for the humour and style and on occasion fortitude with which you delivered the project. If I am every lucky enough to work with you again, I’m sure that it will be just as much fun (well from my end at least!). Jon Bell - UK Contingents Manager 13th World Scout Moot
