Kids have mostfun outside

Just the otherday while taking awalk past thegroup campingarea at Tilly Creek,my wife and Inoticed kids and allthe fun they werehaving. It was hot, there were noswings, no climbing bars, yet thekids were laughing, playing and hav-ing fun camping in a place complete-ly unlike where they probably lived.

They were jumping rope, playinghide and seek, and in general, havingfun. Nobody was texting, no one wastalking on a cell phone. They wereplaying with each other and talkingface to face.

It got me to thinking of my kiddays and things my brother and I didfor fun. Each year mom rented acabin in SkyForest, in the SanBernardino mountains.

The year I remember best was thetime we drove there in an oldStudebaker that had a rumble seatwe got to ride in. (The trunk of thecar opens up and has a seat which isopen to the world). If you have neverridden in a rumble seat you haven'tlived. The wind rushes past, theworld is a different place and every-

body waves as you go by.That same year my brother and I

got two wagons and raced eachother down the hill next to our cabin. The last time we raced we collidedand my brother got skinned up andwas yelling for Mom. While he wasyelling a caterpillar fell out of a treeand into his mouth and he swal-lowed it. Then he really startedyelling. Mom made him swallowMilk of Magnesia. She said it wasgood for everything, why not acaterpillar? My brother lived, so Iguess she was right.

Later my brother and I decided tosleep outside under the stars. Wewere wakened by our garbage canbeing knocked over by a bear. Theporch light was on and we could seehim plain as day. We both wentscreaming into the cabin, wakingMom and Grandma. The bear ranaway, but we never slept outsideagain. Still, it was the best vacationever and we never forgot it.

That was the year we took a longhike from home and got lost. Wecouldn't find our house. We wereboth scared and crying and someneighbor found us and took ushome. We were only a block away.

Picture brings back manyhappy memories

Dear Kern River Courier,I saw the picture on page 14 in theJuly 29th Courier of the Weldon Storeasking if anyone knew the locationand also saying the date wasunknown. It looks like it did to meduring 1956 through 1958, for the twoand a half years my parents raisedpotato crops for Mr. Metler ofBakersfield in the Onyx and Weldonareas.

My family traded there regularlyand it was also the Weldon PostOffice and we had a P.O. box there. Itwas located on the corner of FayeCanyon Road across from South ForkSchool, and the South Fork Woman'sClub was on the same side of theroad, behind the store. It was in the

Letters to the Couriersixties when the P.O. was moved outon its own. During 1958 it was a spe-cial stop for our school bus onceevery couple weeks if we kids hadbeen on our best behavior. All of uskids worked at getting that stop, sowe policed each other and ourselves. That bus driver won an award threeyears in a row I know of for the best-behaved loads in the a.m. and p.m.

The picture brought back so manyhappy memories. So many I keptwandering away from the question ofits location, it took five tries to keep itdown to this short. Most were one toone and a half long pages long in aschool notebook. Thanks Arthur forthe memories and I'll be keeping thepicture to tell stories to my grand andgreat grandkids.Jane Hixon,Onyx

Q: I have been hearing rumorsthat Desperate Housewives hasbeen canceled. Is that true? I hopenot, as its my favorite show! --Emmy R., via e-mail

A: Desperate Housewiveshas not been canceled; how-ever, creator Marc Cherryrecently announced that thisupcoming eighth season willbe the shows last. While thenews was bittersweet foreveryone involved, cast andcrew agree that the time hascome to wrap things up onWisteria Lane. Marc teased atABC’s Television CriticsAssociation party last month that thisfinal season will return to the basicsand revisit the mystery that launchedthe show: Mary Alice’s death. TeriHatcher and company will return onSunday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m. EDT.

Q: Last night I rented RedRiding Hood and noticed one ofthe stars is Max Irons. Any rela-tion to Jeremy Irons? -- Hillary G.,via e-mail

A: Max Irons, 25, is the son ofAcademy Award-winning Englishactor Jeremy Irons.

Next up, Max is set to star as thetitle character in the feature filmVivaldi, along with Alfred Molina, ElleFanning and Tom Wilkinson. It is duefor release in 2013.

Q: With all the talk ofAmy Winehouse’s recentdeath, the death of foot-ball great Bubba Smithwas overlooked. Can yougive me any informationon him? Harold T. inFlorida

A: Charles Aaron ‘Bubba’Smith passed away on Aug. 3of apparent natural causes (as

of this writing, the final coroner’sreport had not been released). The for-mer defensive end for the BaltimoreColts, Oakland Raiders and HoustonOilers -- who some consider even morefamous for his work as MosesHightower in the Police Academy films-- was 66 at the time of his passing.

Picks of the week

Rio (PG) -- Blu (voiced byJesse Eisenberg) is a raremacaw -- thought to be the lastof his kind -- living the good lifeas a pet in Minnesota. When its discoveredthat there is anothermember of his speciesin Brazil, Blu is taken ona trip to meet his femalecounterpart (voiced byAnne Hathaway.) Whatfollows is a formulaicanimated adventure ofmadcap talking crittersfleeing bumbling ani-mal smugglers.

The vibrant colors, wild (yetforgettable) music and sheer vol-ume give Rio something toappreciate. While it falls short ofcharming, theres something tobe said for Rio as a spectacle --a sort of dazzling Carniv‡l forthe rugrats.

The Perfect Host (R) -- DavidHyde Pierce (Niles from Frasier)stars in this confusing-yet-admirable jumble of neuroses, thrills and unsettling humor. Acriminal on the run (ClayneCrawford) lies his way into thehome of Pierces unsuspecting

urbane gentleman, who ispreparing for his big dinnerparty. A game of predator andprey ensues, in which few thingsare what they seem.

It’s dark comedy with notes ofHitchcock and a heaping pile ofrole reversals, twists and mindgames. While plenty of laughs

and chills are containedwithin, some audiencemembers may sufferfrom crippling plot-twistfatigue by the end of thefilm.

In a Better World (R) --This Danish foreign-lan-guage drama exploresgripping issues in justice,

civility, grief and par-enthood. Anton is a

doctor torn between twoworlds: his family life in the sub-urbs of Denmark, and his workas a doctor in a war-torn cornerof Africa. The characters mustnavigate unclear moral land-scapes in the parallel worlds ofschoolyard bullies and brutalwarlords. The story is well-craft-ed, perhaps too tidy at times, but the conflicts faced by thecharacters are not so tidy, andthe story has enough gravitas toturn down easy answers.

I’m not theonly one wish-ing that sum-mer will soonbe over. Itseems that mosteveryonewhom, I talkedto that fishesthe lake, havetwo things toask me; wereare the fish bit-ing and when are they biting?

Honestly I couldn’t answereither these days. I’m not surethe fish could answer thosequestions if asked. With the lakein perpetual motion, keeping thewater levelat a steadyup anddown or inother wordslet it comein and theCorp will letit out, withthe latter incontrol these days.

Todays hot spot will be nearlydried up tomorrow. personaly Ican’t wait for the lake to get tothe winter time level. If it wasn’tfor the catfish bite being goodand the swiming being better wemight as well take a nap andhave someone wake us up in the

middle of september.Seriously the fishing in the

lake is slow at this time of year, and the catching even slower.

As always there is a silver lin-ing to be had and we are fortu-nate to have the Hatchery in ourlittle town, and the guys havebeen stocking the Upper andLower Kern River each weekwith regular rainbows and giv-ing us a bonus of those homegrown trophy trout.

Jack Bonham of WoffordHeights helped the hatcherycrew stock some nice trout upriver earlier this week and laterwent back and caught severalnice fish and was able to releasethem back for someone else tocatch. If you have some honey-do’s now is a good time to get-

For those buses not equippedwith the stop signs, it would begood to remember that schoolbuses flash their yellow lights whenthey are preparing to stop, and thentheir red lights when they come to astop. You should prepare to stopwhen the yellow flashes, and thenstop when the red lights come on.You must stop from either directionuntil the children are safely acrossthe street and the lights stop flash-ing. The law requires you remainstopped as long as the red lights areflashing (CVC §22454).

Remember, the start of schoolmeans extra vigilance for drivers. The kids may be excited and theymay forget to look both ways beforethey dart out in front of you, so beprepared.

The permit process is expected totake some time; however, if all goeswell, KVRC projects to begin con-struction in the fall of 2012. If con-struction starts on schedule, the firstphase of construction will be finishedin the early spring of 2013.

How much is done in the firstphase mainly depends on how muchmoney is raised, but the permit will bevalid for an extended period of time, allowing the phasing in of additionalparts of the projects in the future.

The river right (west) side of theriver is owned by the county andoperated as a county park. The riverleft (east) side is privately ownedFrandy Campground. Both partiesare aware of the project and excitedabout the possibilities.

It is the hope of KVRC that the ren-

ovation will increase tourism dollars, and give people who live here anopportunity to watch fun events andexperience a variety of cultural phe-nomena that we might have missedbefore.

The extent of the current plans arefrom the bridge to Jakes pond (justbelow the park). Right now there areno plans to extend the project areafarther downstream.

Kern County will manage all activ-ities and maintenance. So as far asany events scheduled in the Park, auser would continue the park permit-ing process through the Kern CountyParks and Recreation Department.

The main focus of the project willbe on the park side of the river. A"dream" design would include fea-tures on the Frandy side, however, itwill depend on fund raising successbefore work on that side of the river isconsidered.

When you're talking about realWild West characters, anotherwas Charlie Goodnight. Leather-tough Charles Goodnight (1836-1920) was born into a Germanfamily in Illinois. His father died ofpneumonia whenhe was five, hismother remarriedand the familyrelocated to theBrazos River inTexas when littleCharley was nine.

At 12, he wasbreaking mus-tangs. At 15, hewas a jockey whowon many horseraces for his overjoyed stepfather. In 1856, Charles partnered withhis stepbrother J. Wes Sheek, tending 430 cows belonging toneighbor Claiborn Varner. Inreturn, they could keep everyfourth newborn calf.

By 1860 the pair had 180 head. The Civil War suspended theirburgeoning bovine business.Goodnight served as a TexasRanger Confederate scout. In1864, he returned to find his por-tion of the herd had grown to5,000 head. He and Sheek negoti-ated to buy the entire Varner herd, and by 1865, they had 8,000 head.In 1866, Goodnight met 54-year-old Oliver Loving and changedbusiness partners. The great cattle

drives were starting, and Goodnight wanted to do it hisway.

He wanted to drive his cattle tothe Colorado frontier by way ofNew Mexico. That summer, he,Loving, and 18 cowboys set outwith 2,000 longhorns across whatwould come to be known as the"Goodnight-Loving Trail" to FortSumner, New Mexico.

Goodnight made rawhide his-tory as he drove those cattle. Asan example of the hardships theyfaced, the Concho River repre-sented the last water for 92 miles. From there, he pushed the herd72 hours without a break. At 2a.m. on the third night, the cowssmelled the waters of the Pecos12 miles away, and stampededthe rest of the way. Though 300

head dropped during the forcedmarch and another 100 drownedin the final confusion, the trip wasa financial success.

Most were sold to the govern-ment. Loving drove the remainingcattle on to Denver. Goodnightwent back to Texas with $12,000 inhis saddlebags. If you want to seea good movie about the cattledrives, John Wayne made "RedRiver" and you should see it. It's aclassic.
