KEY POINTS OF PERSONAL SECURITY
Integrated Protective Concepts
Introduction
This presentation provides a very brief overview of key points of personal security
Each of these key points requires focus and examination beyond this presentation
While application of these elements can mitigate risks it’s important to remember there are no guarantees and no absolutes
Effective personal security means fitting these elements into your life and your particular circumstances
Elements1. Know your environment2. Maintain awareness3. Identify vulnerable
points/times and areas of increased risk
4. Elevate your level of alertness at vulnerable points/times
5. Avoid time/place predictability
6. Have a contingency plan7. Proper mindset8. Have a physical skills
toolbox
Know your Environment
Be aware of the particular threats in the environment where you are living, traveling or operating
Know the baseline so you can identify abnormalities Be familiar with the modus operandi of threat
groups and actors
Maintain Awareness
It’s critical to maintain a base level of awareness whenever you are in public and even in your residence
This should be a passive awareness of what is going on around you, who is near you, etc.
This should not mentally exhaust you or require undue focus
It’s important to limit distractions such as mobile phone, texting, etc.
Identify Vulnerable Points/Times
Look at your daily routine and identify places and times where you are especially vulnerable
This vulnerability may come from time/place predictability such as leaving your home in the morning at the same time each day
It may come from particular locations such as dangerous neighborhoods or chokepoints on a route
Elevate your Alertness
Elevate your level of alertness at these key times/places
Focus on your surroundings and look for the abnormal and the absence of the normal
Watch the behavior of people and vehicles and assess them
Look for suspicious indicators such as correlating actions, people out of place, etc.
Avoid Time/Place Predictability
To the degree possible avoid being too time & place predictable
Vary routes and times to the extent possible Determine the degree of avoidance you need to
practice based on your personal risk assessment At a minimum recognize the vulnerability and
increase your alertness as we just discussed
Have a Contingency Plan
Plan for potential scenarios that may put you in danger and have a plan to mitigate the risk to yourself
Always strive to leave yourself an exit Mindset various scenarios in advance so you will
have a game plan if you need to react to a particular threat or danger
Proper Mindset
Be proactive and prepared for likely threats Determine to be a survivor and be confident but
realistic in your capabilities Understand that any plan will likely need to be
adapted upon contact with a threat situation
Physical Skills Toolbox Possess some level of physical skills to use as a last
resort Physical skills may include close quarter combat
skills, evasive driving or weapons use but aren’t limited to these
Avoidance and proactive behavior are best but in a worst case scenario you may have to use physical skills
The level of skillset needed is determined by your circumstances and personal risk assessment
Conclusion
This presentation has outlined some of the key elements of personal security
Each of these elements require further exploration and examination
These elements are scalable and adaptable depending on your personal situation
Taking a proactive approach to your personal security can pay significant dividends in reducing risk
