NEWS Keyes Claims Challenged A blue ribbon committee of eminent clinicians and researchers reported to members of the American Academy of Periodontology, assembled at their 70th annual meeting in New Orleans, September 19-22, 1984, that former NIDR researcher Paul Keyes has no basis for his claims of efficacy for his monitored modulated therapy. For two years, the Committee ob- tained and studied protocols submitted to the National Institute of Dental Re- search by Dr. Keyes, and data from pa- tient records kept by Dr. Keyes and his associates. The data was submitted to the Committee by NIDR in response to an Academy request filed under the Freedom of Information Act. The Committee's conclusion was based on the following reasons: 1) there were no controls; 2) there was no comparison between the investigator's treatment and any other treatment modality; 3) measurements were taken in a nonsystematic fashion over varied periods of time; 4) the usefulness and validity of microscopic monitoring of plaque samples was not established; 5) no objective criteria for observations and measurements of periodontal dis- ease and health had been established; 6) any beneficial effect on patients beyond that achieved by conventional scaling, root planing, and home care procedures could not be substantiated. Further, the Committee "seriously doubts that any scientifically valid con- clusions can be drawn from this material". Continuing Education The University of Toronto.
