18 th July 2019 From the Principal Welcome back to Term 3. For the most part, the holidays were wet and cold but there were just enough fine days to get out and about and do a few things with the family. I managed to get a few jobs done around the house that I had been putting off for too long, so for me the break was productive at least. As most of you know, my family welcomed a new puppy just before the end of Term 2. His name is Newman and he is still a little bit naughty so there was lots of chasing him around and cleaning up the destruction he left in his wake. He is a beautiful little boy and when he is able to obey and have good manners Newman will be able to visit classrooms and meet everyone. We are now attending ‘Puppy School’ where we will all have a lot more training. YEAR 6 PUBLISHING At the end of Term 2, Year 6 were busy working on story books. They were both writing and illustrating to give to their buddies in Prep. I visited their classroom on the last day of term and was astounded by the amount of work they had put into preparing these gifts for their little friends. The quality of work was amazing and the stories were both exciting and interesting. The illustrations were truly beautiful and I look forward to seeing the finished products. Here are just a few of the pieces being finalized before publishing in Term 3. 18th July 2019 From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 3.

YEAR 6 PUBLISHING

At the end of Term 2, Year 6 were busy working on story books. They were both writing and illustrating to give to their buddies in Prep. I visited their classroom on the last day of term and was astounded by the amount of work they had put into preparing these gifts for their little friends.

The quality of work was amazing and the stories were both exciting and interesting. The illustrations were truly beautiful and I look forward to seeing the finished

products. Here are just a few of the pieces being finalized before publishing in Term 3.

SADAKO AND 1000 PAPER CRANES

Year 4 read the story “Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes” by Eleanor Coerr.

Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl living in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan (August 6, 1945). In 1955, at age 11, Sadako was diagnosed with leukaemia, a type of cancer caused by the atomic bomb. While in the hospital, Sadako started to fold paper cranes. In Japan, there is a belief that if you folded 1000 paper cranes, then your wish would come true. Sadako spend 14 months in the hospital, folding paper cranes with whatever paper she could get. Paper was scarce so she used the paper from medicine bottles, candy wrappers, and left over gift wrap paper. Her wish was that she would get well again and to attain peace & healing to the victims of the world. Sadako died on October 25, 1955, she was 12 years old and had folded over 1300 paper cranes. Sadako’s friends and classmates raised money to build a memorial in honour of Sadako and other atomic bomb victims. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial was completed in 1958 and has a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane. At the base is a plaque that says:

This is our cry.

This is our prayer. Peace in the World.

4C were so inspired by the story that they decided to fold their own 1000 cranes. The whole class worked on the project and it wasn’t long before the students in 4A and 4B joined in to help them in their task. Even some of the students from other year levels have worked at home to make their own paper cranes to donate to the effort.

I’m so proud of our students and inspired by the empathy and compassion they were able to show when exposed to the evoking story of Sadako. If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend that you do so. Just make sure you have the tissues ready at hand.

ADAPTATIONS

Year 4 have also been working on “Adaptations”. Each student selected an animal that was currently under threat by extinction and made their own adaptations to the animal in the hope that they might help them to survive. The students were encouraged to use their imaginations and some of the results are just amazing. There is the Secret Tiger with a stinger on its tail, the flying Devil Leopard with dragon wings and the Flying Vampire Red Panda.

If you’re over in the Year 4 building, make sure you have a good look at these wonderful creations.

THE DOT

Also on display is work completed by 4A inspired by a story simply called “The Dot” by Peter H Reynolds.

It tells the story of a girl who feels that she has no artistic ability at all until one day her teacher encourages her to simply make a mark on the paper and see where it takes her. This beautiful story shows us that there is an artist in all of us. We just need to make a beginning and then let inspiration and imagination take us wherever it may lead. Here are some of the works inspired by “The Dot”

Well done Year 4, all of your hard work on display proves to me that you are inspired students, imaginative and artistic, and clearly able to think outside of the square. I congratulate you on all of your efforts and encourage you to always apply the same amount of effort to your work.

BUTTERFLIES Inspired by Butterflies, the Prep Team have been working on Symmetry using crayons and crayon resistant paint. By folding their paper down the centre and then drawing only one half of a butterfly, the Prep students were then encouraged to replicate the same shape on the other side of the paper using symmetry.

This magnificent and colourful display is the result of their hard work and is on display in the front office. It brightens my day to see such vibrant colours so artfully displayed in our foyer. Well done Preps!

INSPIRATIONAL STUDENTS

Finally, Congratulations to two students who have devoted their lunch times to cleaning up the school grounds. Armed with buckets and tongs, these two student helpers, spend their lunch times or recesses picking up papers and litter around the school. Both Jade and Lyla from 2C have such pride in our school that they were determined to eliminate the litter dumped on our oval over the weekends. They were inspired to make these signs in the hope that it would discourage people from discarding their waste so carelessly.

I am so impressed that we are helping to raise such environmentally aware students and that the respect that we have for each other here in our school has now extended to the planet on which we live.

This newsletter has been all about inspiration. Artistic inspiration, social inspiration and inspiring behavior worth emulating. As a Principal, it is always my greatest hope that our teachers are able to inspire their students to want to learn. Our teachers are inspiring our students to do so much more than that. To express themselves artistically, to show compassion for those less fortunate, to write and publish their own story books, to fold 1000 cranes, to care about our environment and to hope and conceive of a brighter future for our world. Our students, inspire me.

2019 Parent Opinion Survey

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22rd July to Sunday 11th August. The survey will be conducted online. It only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information.
