Comments/EnquiriesHello, I am running an environmental project with Southampton Solent University through installation and action. Irecently started an online petition to implement a charge on single use carrier bags in England as in Wales. This mustget 100,000 in a year to be considered. In support of this petition I plan to give out tote bags in West QuayShopping Centre, attached to them; a business card with a link to the petition (and potentially your business card). Ibelieve that this is the perfect place to do this in the height of Southamptons consumption and therefore the height ofsingle use plastic carrier bag usage. I ask if you would be willing to give me some canvas bags for this project. As Ido not have anything to advertise (only the use of reusable bags), you would have free reign to print whatever youlike on these bags. This would be a brilliant advertising opportunity for you. Hi Tom

Please see the project idea from a student below. I am still waiting for details of cost, which willdepend on how cheaply our marketing team can get tote bags from a supplier.

Could you confirm whether the UnLtd part of the 3-tier funding is allowed to cover projects that arepart of a university course? Our funding cannot, however I told the student I would try and explorealternative avenues for her.

"Couch Fest" Short Film ShowcaseArt House, Sat 10th Nov, 5PM and 8PM

Celebrating its fifth year in 2012, Couch Fest Films is a cozyshorts film fest hosted in people's houses & small venues all

over the world all on one day. During Couch Fest Films, lovers of film can sit shoulder toshoulder watching short films while stuffing their faces with snacks.

For details of our programme, please see here:- http://www.couchfestfilms.com/films-2012-Southampton2.html

Each year, films from such festivals as Sundance, SXSW, CFC Worldwide Shorts, SeattleInt. Film Festival, and the New Horizons Film Festival to name a few are presented. Couch Fest Films is not an online event nor a broadcast event. It is a film festival thatreplaces traditional theater venues with cozy residential venues and alternative locations.

A short intermission in the middle of each program will allow viewers to discuss the filmsand socialize. Participants will have the opportunity to interact, share and discover newfilms and fellow lovers of film. Of course you want to attend Couch Fest Films! Maybe youlove film. STUDIO CLOTHES SWAP

There will be a clothes swap in the Fine Art studios on Thursday 15th November from 4-6PM.If you have clothes you don’t wear or don’t want bring them along and swap them for something

else.

The rules are these:

Bring your clothes and lay them out on the table (please make sure they are clean), have a lookthrough the other clothes to see what you lie and pick up what you like. Keep in mind to take only

what you will actually wear so that others can also enjoy. This is not a performance but a participation event.

There will be cake! From: Nicola C hamberlainSent: Tuesday, November 06, 2012 10:51 AMT o: [email protected]: Re: studio clothes swaps Hi Libby, Y es, I think this is a great idea! How about next monday (12th November). I can send out an email for you if you send me the content :) Nic x

I think the evening might be the best time. Also who would be allowed into the studios for this? Just students who use the building? All Solent students?Or anyone? ThanksLibby

Dear Liz Thank you for your interest in Friends of the Earth. We are a relatively small organisation and unfortunately we are unable to sign letters of support for campaigns or projects which we do not work specifically work on.The issue of carrier bags, particularly by supermarkets, is without doubt a big problem, as is over packaging. However, it is far from the only environmental abuse or even the worst interms of overall impact. Tackling the problem of plastic bags would only make a tiny difference in tackling the UK’s waste crisis. Other measures are needed to reduce waste and increasere-use and recycling. Attempting to win far-reaching reductions in waste, let alone waste going to landfill and incineration is Friends of the Earth's priority.

Rather than campaign to reform specific aspects of individual companies' behaviour, Friends of the Earth is campaigning for corporate accountability through wide-ranging legislation. Thiswould directly hit the refusal of suppliers and retailers to address packaging issues, among many others. However a number of our local groups have campaigned on the issue and may be able to help. Hi Libby I am actually out of the office, but hopefully below will be a useful summary: - Martin Walton (Uni) was contacted to see whether he could offer financial support from the UniversityGreen Impact budget. Unfortunately he is unable to.- Tom Saunders (Uni) was contacted. I believe you have also been in contact with Tom, he may be ableto help. If you continue to contact Tom directly he should be able to support you further.- Jamie Ings (SU) may be able to provide you with some quotes for purchasing bags, however thesequotes may not be any cheaper than what you have looked at. You might want to get in contact with Kelly Collins, she is the President of the SIFE (Enactus) Societywhich runs enterprising student projects. She may have some good ideas or the SIFE team may havesome other good contacts they could pass on to you. She is a student and contactable on the unisystem. Hope that helps!

Hi Laura, I’m doing BA Fine Art at Solent and my work is based on environmental issues and mass consumption throughkind of installation and action. I recently started an online petition to implement a charge on single use carrierbags in England as in Wales. This must get 100,000 in a year to be considered. As part of my work/in support ofthis petition I have a plan to give out tote bags in West Quay, attached to them; a business card with a link to thepetition. It also serves a good purpose in Southampton's’ height area of consumption. The problem I face isbuying 100 plus tote bags works out at about £1 per bag and I do not have that to spare.I was wondering if the SU(/Solent) have any tote bags with Solent logo on? Perhaps left over from freshers fair? Or if you have any ideaswhere I could get some? Or if there is the possibility of a work related grant? Thank youLibby Russell

Date: 11/16/2012 11:37:43 AMSubject: Re: Solent environmental projects and carrier bag legislation

Hi Libby,It was great to meet you the other day. I think the 5p charge would be a great idea.

Have you spoken to some of the leading plastic bag groups about this? There's the MSC who also have a list of plastic bag free towns (or those whoare at least considering it), http://www.mcsuk.org/what wedo/Clean%20seas%20and%20beaches/Campaigns%20and%20policy/Plastic%20bag%20free%20towns

Morsbags http://www.morsbags.com/ is an international group where people give out handmade bags and each of those groups I'm sure would bewilling to encourage people to sign the petition.

In terms of doing things locally,Do you want to write a short piece on this issue that we could put on the website? That would help raise the profile locally.

Romsey had a fairly active group for a while, but I'm not sure if they are still running. I'm sure the people are still in Romsey, though, and wouldappreciate a fresh look at this issue. Here's a bit about them from 2010: http://www.romseyadvertiser.co.uk/news/5059033.Town s really got a handleon plastic bag free shopping/ You might want to get in touch with Transition Romsey as I'm sure a lot of the members overlap.

What precisely would you want the funding for? Printing costs for the leaflet? Buying tote bags?If you're looking to purchase tote bags, Solent has taken over the UK side of Vandanamu bags as Vandanamu Ethical Cottons -http://www.vandanamu.org/ they might be able to point you in the direction of funding.

If you wanted to make bags, there are a few WI groups in the area who might want to join you on this, or the Art House might be willing to run a fewworkshops encouraging people to make bags. Using the Morsbag model, you might be able to ask for donations of old bed sheets, etc. and then runworkshops. You could even have a laptop on hand when you have the workshops so that people could sign the petition online as they take part.

Hope this is helpful!!

Hi Libby, Thank you for your email to the Marine Conservation Society, and thank you so much for what you are doing to cut down the numberof plastic bags used. It sounds as though you are doing fantastic work. You would be welcome to put your petition link on ourFacebook page (link below in the signature), and I will certainly ask my colleagues to sign it – and will do so myself of course. Youmight like to have a look at our own plastic bags link athttp://www.mcsuk.org/what_we_do/Clean%20seas%20and%20beaches/campaigns%20and%20policy/Go%20plastic%20bag%20free(sorry about the long link). Many thanks again for all your hard work – and good luck. Ann Ann HuntEnquiries OfficerMarine Conservation SocietySwitchboard: 01989 566017Email: [email protected]

Hi Jamie

Please could you let me know the quote you received on tote bags for Freshers this year - what was thetotal cost per bag? A student is looking for our support in buying some tote bags and I wonderedwhether we managed to get a discount or whether we are friendly with a supplier that could offer usbags at a discount price?

Thanks

Could you confirm whether the UnLtd part of the 3-tier funding is allowed to cover projects that arepart of a university course? Hi Libby

Your idea sounds great - I am going to try and support you as much as I can. The SU does offer fundingsupport for students to trial enterprising ideas or campaigns, however unfortunately we cannot fundprojects that are a direct result of a University assignment. The plain reason is that we are notfinancially able to support every student, therefore we have to put extra curricular criteria in place. Ihave attached our funding guidelines for you to review and see how we can't fund you.

Despite this, there may be other funding options for us. I have just emailed the SU Marketing andCommunications Manager to get his quote from our tote bags during Freshers. We may be able to get adiscount or get your quote of £1 a bag reduced. What is the total number of bags you are looking for?

Secondly - I will email the University and see whether their Environmental Manager can offer anysupport. They support the SU with green initiatives which may fall outside of our funding restrictions.

Thirdly - I will contact the University Employability and Enterprise Team and see whether this can fit withtheir funding criteria for enterprising ideas.

If all the above fail, we can look into some more solutions!

Thanks

Dear Libby Russell I am writing in reply following your recent e-mail to Waste Management and the subsequent reply from Loretta Emery re the Environmental Champions. The second part of your enquiry contained the following: Also I was wondering about the policy regarding looking for things at the tip/waste disposal areas. Is it allowed? I am running a project on unnecessarywaste, I want to encourage people to find other uses for things they would normally throw away and see how many things are thrown out that still have lifeleft in them. If it is not currently normal practice, would it be at all possible to make an exception in my case under supervision or having signed adisclaimer? I have already sent several emails about this and not received a reply. This is probably best viewed in two areas one being what we call bulky waste and the other being what we call residual waste. Bulky Waste There are two potential routes for this as follows: Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) – This is where residents take their bulky household items themselves to be disposed of. There are 26 sitesin Hampshire operated by a private contractor Hopkins Recycling Ltd on behalf of Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council and SouthamptonCity Council. Hopkins Recycling Ltd are incentivised to recycle and reuse as many items as they can leading to these sites diverting over 80% of what isdelivered away from landfill. Residents can purchase re-usable items on site from the sales area provided on each of the 26 sites. The following linkprovides information on the HWRC sites in Hampshire: http://www.hopkinsrecycling.co.uk/netley.php Bulky waste collected by the council – The council will also collect bulky waste from resident’s properties but makes a collection charge. The collecteditems are taken to a waste transfer station where the bulky items are sorted into:

Metal items for recyclingFridges for recyclingCRTs and TVs for recycling

The remaining items are sent for disposal via landfill. However trials have now started to see if some of the remaining bulky items can be turned into afuel for use in energy generation. With a range of alternative routes to the council’s chargeable bulky collection scheme such a freecycle, local equivalents of freecycle, charity shops andfree adds the quality of the items the council picks up is generally poor making reuse difficult. These items are deposited at waste transfer stations prior to bulking up however there are significant health and safety risks associated with examiningthese materials due to the heavy machinery used at these sites. Speaking to other authorities that have tried to sort these items out for re-use / recyclingthey found that only a small percentage was suitable. This is the reason the council is undertaking trials on using this material as a fuel. Residual Waste This is collected in wheeled bins and is sent straight for incineration either directly or via a transfer station. This is collected in collection vehiclesequipped with compaction and so collected items are subjected to significant crushing making them unsuitable for reuse. Hi Martin

A student has been in contact asking for some support with an environmental project she is runningacross Southampton to encourage a charge on single use carrier bags, ultimately to reduce theenvironmental impact this has on the environment. She is asking for support from the Students' Union inpromoting this project.

I think this is a great idea and would love to help her, it clearly fits our objectives with Green Impact andmay help add to the overall portfolio of green University projects. Unfortunately, as the project is part ofthe students course the SU cannot give her any financial support. We can however assist with thepromotion of the project and will endeavour to do so.

I wondered whether you will be receiving the grant from NUS/Universities Green Impact this year and, ifso, whether you thought we could offer any financial support from that pot to the student?

Looking forward to your reply.

Please could you let me know the quote you received on tote bags for Freshers this year - what was the total cost per bag? Astudent is looking for our support in buying some tote bags and I wondered whether we managed to get a discount or whetherwe are friendly with a supplier that could offer us bags at a discount price?

Thanks

Hi Laura, I’m doing BA Fine Art at Solent and my work is based on environmental issues and mass consumption through kind of installation and action. I recentlystarted an online petition to implement a charge on single use carrier bags in England as in Wales. This must get 100,000 in a year to be considered. As part of my work/in support of this petition I have a plan to give out tote bags in West Quay, attached to them; a business card with a link to thepetition. It also serves a good purpose in Southampton's’ height area of consumption. The problem I face is buying 100 plus tote bags works out atabout £1 per bag and I do not have that to spare.I was wondering if the SU (/Solent) have any tote bags with Solent logo on? Perhaps left over fromfreshers fair? Or if you have any ideas where I could get some? Or if there is the possibility of a work related grant? Thank youLibby Russell

Yes please, a quote on those would be great. I think that is what I meant any way.

We paid £70 for 100 small canvas bags from SoFair, but I imagine your quote will be a lot cheaper.

Thanks

Hi Laura,

We didn't order tote bags this year, we ordered bio-degradable plastic bags instead. would you like toknow what we got for that? I can certainly introduce to the supplier and encourage them to offer adiscount.

Let me know.
