Kidderminster College is perfectly placed in the heart of the town. Kidderminster town centre consists of four shopping centres all in close walking distance of each other linked with traditional high street shopping, with a good mix of restaurants and bars alongside independent and national retailers. Weavers Wharf is a modern retail park located just two minutes walk from the College, consisting of 23 shops which includes Marks & Spencers, Next, TKMaxx and Debenhams. The town centre also hosts a number of annual events such as the Kidderminster Arts Festival.

Learner life is about more than just work. Here at Kidderminster College you’ll be joining a vibrant learner community, with plenty of opportunities to get involved with clubs and activities.

Open Evenings for our full time courses are held every year in October and February. These are an opportunity for you, your parents and friends to visit the college, meet the staff and see firsthand our outstanding facilities and obtain information on the qualifications and courses available. They will be advertised in the local press and on our website nearer the time.

The Students’ Union is an organisation run to support learners, provide entertainment and organise activities throughout the college. All learners are entitled to join the Union. You can also apply for an NUS card, which entitles you to discounts at many shops. All learners are encouraged to get involved in running the Union. Remember, the more you get involved, the more you are likely to get out.

The college offers a varied and creative menu in a relaxed atmosphere at its cafe bar, which serves a wide range of hot and cold snacks, full meals and beverages in addition to vegetarian and healthy eating choices.

Our Creative Industries learners provide some fantatstic entertainment throughout the year which you can have the opportunity to enjoy. Take a look at www.yourkctv.co.uk to sample the vibrant atmosphere which is distinctive here!

At Kidderminster College we appreciate that our learners are individuals with different strengths and areas for development where you may require additional support to overcome challenges.

The Additional Learning Support Team is here to help you to achieve your learning goals.

Areas that you might need help with:

• Some practical help with your studies; many learners are not 100% confident with planning and doing assignments or aren’t quite sure what is expected of them

• You may have a physical mobility, hearing or sight impairment

• You may have a condition such as Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

• You may have a specific learning difficulty such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia or Dyspraxia

• You may have medical or health issues such as Asthma, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetes, ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) or Mental Health Difficulties, Depression

• You may need some help with your exams (extra time, reader, scribe, separate room, prompt, rest breaks)

Whatever the challenge or obstacle, the Additional Learning Support Team is here to work alongside you and provide you with practical help and support. Our experienced and trained staff are committed to working inclusively, using a variety of methods to meet learners’ personal needs across a range of difficulties and disabilities.

Learner Support Practitioners (LSPs) work with learners in the classroom. LSPs are there for a number of reasons and support learners in different ways by, for example, taking notes, helping learners understand the main points of a lesson, or by organising their work. Learners negotiate how they would like to be supported through discussion with their tutor and the LSP.

People with dyslexic traits can have difficulties with reading, organising and processing information. Often their difficulty can go undiagnosed in school and it’s not until they have an assessment that they discover the reasons why. If you suspect you might be dyslexic, your tutor can arrange for you to have an assessment here in College. We have specialist Learning Support Facilitators (LSFs) on hand to provide support and offer strategies to help you learn. Learners with dyslexic difficulties may be allocated a LSP to take notes for them in class, have support for reading and extra time in examinations. Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver, and Tom Cruise are just a few of the many famous and successful dyslexics who haven’t let dyslexia stand in their way.

We can arrange for the loan of specialist learning aids or equipment you might need such as:

• Laptops or netbook computers

• Assistive technology (read-back and voice activated software)

• Specialist computer hardware

• Digital voice recorders and MP3 players

• Coloured computer screen covers

• Coloured overlays

• Reading rulers

• Magnifiers

• Table risers

• Specially equipped cookery room

• Accessible furniture for learners with physical difficulties

• Perching stools

You will noT have to pay tuition fees if you are:

• aged 16 -18

• aged 19+ and are studying for your full Level 2 qualification

• aged 19 – 24 and are studying for your first full Level 3 qualification

• studying Literacy or Numeracy as part of a Skills for Life programme

• in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group

• unemployed and need skills training to help you enter work

You will HAVe to pay tuition fees if:

• you are aged 19+ from 1 September 2012 and none of the above applies to you

This will be an annual fee of £700 and can be subject to change. If you are enrolling on a two year course you will have to pay a fee* at the beginning of year one and again at the beginning of year two.

*Fees are subject to change and reviewed annually

The Government bodies which provide the College with most of its funding for your full time course – are reducing their contribution to the costs of running some courses for learners aged 19+ from September 2011.

Government priorities in adult learning skills have meant that only priority qualifications are being funded and consequently reduced funding is available to support other qualifications. Colleges have a central role in creating opportunities for millions of people and improving the economy and this role is reflected in a demanding set of Government targets to increase the number of adults, for example, with basic skills, first full Level 2 and 3 qualifications and more employer-focused training.

Therefore colleges are now expected to review the mix of courses they offer and the charges they make for 19+ full time and part time courses in order to make up the income shortfall. Government pressure in this area has, therefore, resulted in reduced funding for some courses, even though there is demand for them locally. Unfortunately, the college will have to pass on some of this cost to 19+ learners as well as to employers.

It is now the Government’s policy for those learners aged 19+ to increase their financial contribution towards the cost of their education and training. The impact of this is being felt in colleges nationally and all colleges have introduced charges.

Yes, you can pay in 3 instalments in the autumn, through a Direct Debit arrangement with your bank. However there will be an administration charge to set up the direct debit in the region of £15.

learners have provided the support slot for plant’s own gigs, and he donated a previously unreleased song to feature on the first maS compilation cD.

most of the output of the maS label is recorded and produced in the custom-designed and built recording studio. this digital facility is the nerve centre of the music technology courses.

What will I be learning?AS Media Studies is one of a suite of A-Levels courses chosen to complement our range of full-time Level 3 courses, particularly Creative Industries courses. The media are all around us and impact greatly on our daily lives. We will analyse, question and engage with a range of media. The main areas of study will be television, film, advertising and print-based media. We study two modules:

Module 1: Media Representations and Responses

This unit offers a framework for analysing media texts. We explore media through studying all kinds of texts, such as film, TV, computer games, magazines, websites, music, advertising etc. As we do, you will develop understanding of genre, narrative and representation and make links between the texts and how we/audiences/users respond to them. There will be one exam of 2.5 hours in June.

Module 2: Media Production Processes

For this unit, we create a variety of media, choosing from options designed to suit your interests, e.g. film posters, film trailers, TV and print advertisements, magazine covers and/or articles etc. Through your own original media pieces you will develop and demonstrate skills and an informed, practical understanding of media production processes. You will create three pieces of linked work.

Information Technology is transforming our world, changing the way we learn, the way we communicate, entertain ourselves and how we do business, all requiring a command of technology. With the convergence of telecommunications and computing, IT is the mainstay of the modern commercial world and continues to be one of fastest growing professions, offering multiple career paths.

Careers Today’s businesses produce and handle a mass of information every day, creating the need for skilled people to manage that information in an intelligent and productive way. And for each computer operator there is a programmer and technician, to build and maintain the software and hardware that drives our organisations.

With the majority of today’s businesses relying so heavily on computers and the advances being made in modern technology there has never been a more exciting time to enter a business or IT environment.

Games Design and Development The boundaries of media and IT have all but disappeared with technological advances in computing ever increasing our desire for interactive media and games play. Learners can choose to develop their talents and creativity digitally through the use of multimedia or to specialise in games design & development.

Progression Learners can pursue careers in media, games development, communications, software and hardware development, administration, technical support, computer programming and many more rewarding roles. Learners can also choose to go onto higher level courses in IT, business, media or games development with a good grounding in their chosen discipline. There are not many professions that do not rely to some extent on IT, and so learners of this area are almost certainly securing their future ‘employability’.

Whichever discipline you choose, Kidderminster College, with its highly skilled, industry-trained tutors and up-to-the-minute computer suites equipped with the latest software, provides the ideal training ground for those individuals wishing to pursue a career in the ever-changing world of information technology and multimedia.

Courses and Levels Explained

IT & Computing Courses are designed for those learners who wish to pursue careers within Information Technology and Computing with hands on practical experience being provided to develop skills in a variety of areas including hardware and software applications, programming, internet technologies, web design and networking to name but a few.

Games Design & Development Courses are designed for those learners who wish to pursue careers within the Games Media industry, the main focus being to provide practical experience and knowledge within this industry using Information Technology.

NEW – Learners now have the choice of one year programmes of study in Android Applications, Networking, Computer Technicians and Computing and e-Systems. There is also an option for mature learners who wish to gain an Access to Higher Education qualification through IT.

Please note for those learners who are wishing to study on Level 3 BTEC programmes that there may also be an opportunity to complete their qualifications at Subsidiary and Diploma Levels. These programmes are equivalent to one and two A Levels respectively, and will be undertaken over one year. These options will be covered at interview.

Sport and active leisure continues to be one of the fastest growing employment sectors and consequently offers a vast range of career opportunities. Employers include large leisure companies, tour operators, tourist boards, local authorities, leisure centres, hotels and sports clubs.

While relatively few people earn a living from playing sport, millions of people enjoy participating and working in sport. Whether amateur or professional, most participants need the help of coaches and instructors, and make use of sports facilities and leisure centres in their pursuit of good health and fitness.

Some jobs involve very active work, others less so or are desk-bound, but there are work and career opportunities at all levels – management, professional, skilled and semi-skilled, from Sports Coaches and PE Instructors to Outdoor Education Coaches and Sports Therapists. Many jobs offer the opportunity for promotion to supervisory or managerial levels. There are plenty of opportunities to work abroad and in some jobs it is possible to become self-employed.

These courses are ideal for anyone wishing to pursue a career in Sport & Active Leisure including Fitness and Exercise Instructing, Activity Leaders, Personal Training, Outdoor Activities, Sports Science, Sport Development and Leisure Management. There are a range of qualifications to choose from, including vocational and work based qualifications, all focusing on developing the skills and knowledge required to work within this sector. Learners are encouraged to participate fully within the cross college sporting activities and events and these include opportunities within the Sports Academies.

Learners from the college have signed up to the ‘Step into Sport’ passport scheme. The main aim is to encourage more young people to become involved in sport in their local community. The programme also encourages and generates greater volunteer links between schools and clubs.

Tom Walker started on the Business & Administration apprenticeship programme in October 2010 following successful completion of his ‘A ‘levels.

Having decided against going to University, preferring instead to focus on getting a job with training, Tom was looking for a business administration apprenticeship with a technical/engineering bias as he had completed his Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations under the Young Apprenticeship Programme at Bewdley High School.

Tom is delighted with his progress and is very happy with his decision not to go to University.

The interviewWe really are friendly so don’t panic! You (and your parents if appropriate) will be invited to attend an interview for your chosen course. You may apply for more than one course, although you may have to have an interview for each. The interview is a way of making sure that you have thought carefully about your chosen course and it also gives you the opportunity to ask tutors questions about the course and the College.

Can I get help with costs? If you are a full-time learner you may be eligible to receive help with travel costs. You need to contact your local County Council who should be able to offer advice.

There are also several ways in which the College can assist you with financial difficulties. Grants are means tested and awarded through application.

Bursary FundThe College has a Bursary Fund to help with expenses related to coming to College. This can include help with travel, books, equipment and childcare. You need to be over 16 years of age studying on a recognised course. Application forms are available from Learner Services.

If you have any queries regarding your application or you are not sure which course to choose please contact Learner Services on 01562 512003 / 04.

Care to LearnIf you are a parent under 19 you are likely to have your childcare costs paid for you by Care to Learn. An application pack is available from Learner Services or Care to Learn 08001218989.

Professional & Career Development LoansProfessional & Career Development Loans are bank loans set at a competitive interest rate. They are available to learners aged 18+ and can be used to support full-time, part-time or distance learning courses for up to two years, as long as the course leads to a trade, occupation or profession.

The government will pay the interest on the loan while you are studying and for up to one month afterwards. You will be expected to repay the loan to the bank over an agreed period at a fixed rate of interest.
