A). Project Description Kids Against Hunger is a meal-packing project to benefit families in need. In seven years, Jamestown (N.D.) Kiwanis has packed more than a million meals. Those meals benefit hungry families locally and abroad. The meals cost 25 cents apiece, so one meal package costs $1.50 and feeds six people. Jamestown Kiwanis is responsible for raising those funds. At its most recent Kids Against Hunger event, Jamestown Kiwanis raised $25,000 and, with the help more than 400 volunteers, packed 150,000 meals. In total, the club has raised more than $250,000 and in 2016, the club was privileged to pack its one millionth meal. B). Meeting Needs When the Jamestown Kiwanis secretary heard about Kids Against Hunger at a Kiwanis International Convention, she was inspired to bring the idea back to club members. Don Bentz was at that Kiwanis meeting, hearing a startling statistic: Every 10 seconds, a child dies from hunger-related diseases. Don couldn’t hear that message without doing his part. A long-time foster care parent, Don and his wife, Joyce, refused to sit by when children were in need. Over their lifetime, they have fostered more than 70 children. With passion, Don insisted the club take on the meal packaging event in Jamestown. The need for food relief services is obvious throughout the world, but hungry families are not limited to developing nations. Approximately 8% of the North Dakota population is food insecure. That means they rely on some assistance for food. Local food shelters have an ongoing challenge to keep their shelves stocked for requests. Kiwanis and Kids Against Hunger help to meet those needs by filling the pantries and feeding those needing assistance. Jamestown Kiwanis partners with Kids Against Hunger and Great Plains Food Bank to determine the need. Jamestown Kiwanis is in charge of raising the money and packing the meals. Kids Against Hunger and Great Plains Food Bank determine distribution. C). Population Served In 2017, the meals benefited food banks in North Dakota and Minnesota. Last year alone, Great Plains Food Bank served about 87,00 people. Nearly 40% of those individuals were children, which equates to about 30,000 children. That’s an alarming statistic and the reason why the meals stayed local in 2017. Jamestown Kiwanis provided more than 400 cases of Kids Against Hunger meals to North Dakota and into Minnesota. Great Plains Food Bank delivered the meals to under-served counties across the state that don’t have a traditional food pantry. A). Project Description

Kids Against Hunger is a meal-packing project to benefit families in need.

B). Meeting Needs

When the Jamestown Kiwanis secretary heard about Kids Against Hunger at a Kiwanis International Convention, she was inspired to bring the idea back to club members. Don Bentz was at that Kiwanis meeting, hearing a startling statistic:

Every 10 seconds, a child dies from hunger-related diseases.

C). Population Served

In 2017, the meals benefited food banks in North Dakota and Minnesota.

In prior years, meals benefited local families as well as families in Haiti, Guatemala, and Africa. When packages went to developing countries, the

meals were distributed through churches and schools, not through local government, ensuring the meals served the greatest need. Kids Against Hunger is dedicated to feeding not only the stomaches, but also the mind and souls of those it serves. The organization has provided meals to more than 60 countries throughout the world. It has an ongoing presence in various developing countries, but also helps after hurricanes and other natural disasters occur.

D). Benefit to Children

How can a youngster focus on algebra when she hasn’t eaten since yesterday? When children don’t have their most basic needs met, they can’t move forward to achieve other successes. Jamestown Kiwanis is fighting hunger and giving opportunity to youth locally and around the world.

The founder of Kids Against Hunger, Richard Proudfit, was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minn., before joining the military and traveling the world as a Merchant Marine. After that, he became an entrepreneur. He grew a small business from his own garage into a successful company with six plants throughout the US. But it wasn’t until he was in Honduras as an engineer following a hurricane when his life forever changed. He observed the devastation and felt inspired to save starving children.

“It wasn’t long until I began to see the children literally dying around us. One mother came to me crying, carrying her near dead child, pleading for help. That is when the Lord broke my heart and brought me to my knees and I knew that I had to come back to do something about it.” - Richard Proudfit, Founder

Thirty years later, this nonprofit organization is still going strong with the mission to reduce the number of undernourished children in the US and starving children around the world. And with the Kiwanis mission of improving the world one child and one community at a time, it’s fitting that the club directly benefit children in our community as well as children around the world.

Several Kiwanis members met Richard as he was at three of the Jamestown, ND Kids Against Hunger events. His excitement and enthusiasm to feed children is inspiring to all.

E). Project Impact

More than 400 community volunteers participated in the 2017 event alone, including 40 Jamestown Kiwanis members. The volunteers ranged from babies to 80+ years of age. For Kiwanis members, each participated in some way whether it was planning, fundraising, promoting, or executing the event.

Last year, Great Plains Food Bank distributed all of the Kids Against Hunger meals to food pantries around the state. Those food pantries serve approximately 90,000 people. That’s one out of every nine North Dakotans. F). Project Frequency

Jamestown Kiwanis has held seven events in seven years. Months after the first event, a community member offered an anonymous matching donation. That year we held two events back-to-back. Little did the club know, Kids

Founder, Richard Proudfit

Page 3: Kids Against Huger Signature Project Kiwanis Club of Jamestown · followers have tripled due to the Kids Against Hunger event. L). New Member Attraction Every year, the project attracts

Against Hunger became a signature event that the community not only supports, but insists the club continue each year.

G). Kiwanis Partners

In addition to the local Aktion Club and Key Club, explained further in question R, area Kiwanis Clubs also assisted with the event. Kiwanis clubs in Valley City, Wahpeton, Minot and Carrington supported the project through volunteer hours and monetary gifts.

H). Other Partners

Jamestown Kiwanis could not do what it does without essential partners in Jamestown and the surrounding communities. The club relies on businesses, schools, area organizations, churches and youth groups for donation and support. Even rival service clubs in town, such as the Rotary Club lend a hand. It’s all in good fun as the service clubs joke and compete.

Most years, athletes from local schools help set up the day before and throughout the event. For example, in 2015, dozens of University of Jamestown football players helped carry the heavy tubs filled with rice and soy from one side of the facility to the other. Students from church groups more than 50 miles away attend and pack meals. Even young people help with this event. Kiwanians want to help children. They also want to teach the children how to serve others.

We can’t fail to mention the generous businesses that have lent us their facilities for the events. Locations include a car dealership, a motorcycle store, and even the middle of the mall! The last three years Stutsman Harley-Davidson shared its large shop. Employees there remove hundreds of motorcycles in advance of the event, and then return them after. The employees also have to clean before and after as the ingredients leave a dusty film. It’s also opened the door to volunteers we would never have got otherwise - motorcycle clubs!

I). Kiwanis Brand

If you’re asking how the Kiwanis brand is incorporated into the project…that depends on your definition of brand. If the judges are interested in how the logo is incorporated in the project, the answer is: everywhere. In flyers and ads, in the banners posted that day, each member wears his or her Kiwanis shirt, etc. If the judges are interested in how Kiwanis’ brand of “children, service, improvement,” the answer is, in everything. The project relies on community support. The project benefits families. The project improves lives, making it easier to pay bills, buy medication, etc., for a while until they can catch up. Kids Against Hunger is a great example of what Kiwanians are and how it benefits communities.

J). Project Promotions

The project is promoted through various channels: news releases to radio, TV and newspaper; flyers throughout town, social media, updates to stakeholders via email, etc. With having held six events prior, Jamestown Kiwanis has built a

wonderful support group, both inside the club and outside. Promoting the event gets easier each year. The various outlets, whether it be a local church or the media, look forward to hearing about the next Kiwanis Kids Against Hunger event.

See support materials for sample marketing and project promotions.

K). News/Media Coverage

Jamestown, ND’s three main media outlets, two radio stations and a newspaper, ran stories before the event and after. One local cable access station also covered the event. Jamestown Kiwanians also visited the radio stations, promoting the event live as the campaign approached. On three different occasions, TV stations (from 100 miles away) have attended and covered the event.

Jamestown Kiwanis has an active Facebook page. Before and after the event, the club posted nearly 20 updates and announcements. In total, those posts reached nearly 20,000 people, which is impressive given the town’s population of 15,000. In addition, the pages Facebook “Likes” or followers have tripled due to the Kids Against Hunger event.

L). New Member Attraction

Every year, the project attracts at least one new member to the club, if not more. The event includes several partners – churches, businesses, media, schools, and individuals. All these people make for great members. The person submitting this application joined because of Kids Against Hunger; the former club secretary joined because of Kids Against Hunger and the list goes on. Kids Against Hunger is a great event for children in need. It’s also a great event for Kiwanis as a service club. Those Kids Against Hunger volunteers want to make an impact on the world. Because of Kids Against Hunger, the volunteers see Kiwanis as a way to do that.

M). New Members Gained

Since 2011, more than 10 members have joined the 40-person club. For example, in 2014 the event was held at the mall. After seeing the impact, the mall manager and his wife joined Jamestown Kiwanis. Both Tim and Krysten Perkins now serve on the board and Krysten is the valued former club secretary, referenced earlier.

N). Total Cost of Project

Technically there are no costs for the project. The location is provided at no cost and all supporting materials are provided by Kids Against Hunger. The funds raised go entirely to purchasing ingredients for the meals.

Jamestown Kiwanis allocates $1,000 each year from its budget. That $1,000 is part of the $25,000 the 40 (or so)-person club raised last year alone. The fundraising goal varies from year to year. The club raised $23,000 the first year and the most raised was $50,000.

P). Total Funds Raised

Since 2011, Jamestown Kiwanis has raised more than $250,000. The club raised $25,000 in 2017 alone. Both small and large donors support the Kids Against Hunger project; all adding up to make a huge impact of one million meals packed.

Q). Per-Member Funds Raised

The club raised $44,000 in 2016. At the end of the year, Jamestown Kiwanis reported 47 members, which equates to approximately $936 raised per club member. If you subtract the inactive members that did not contribute, that increases the amount to approximately $1,100. And when taking the total amount raised of more than $250,000 divided by 40 active members, Jamestown Kiwanis has raised an impressive $6,250 per member in six years.

R). Service Leadership Programs Club Participation

Jamestown’s Aktion Club and Jamestown’s Key Club are vital to the program’s success. Each group volunteers to pack that day. The numbers vary from year to year, but an estimated 10 Key Club members and 15 Aktion Club members volunteer for the event. In addition, Aktion Club prepares bake sales and fundraisers to raise money in advance.
