ABOUT US

WE BELIEVE THAT NO KID SHOULD BE LEFT ON THE SIDELINES AND ALL SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE POSITIVE BENEFITS OF ORGANIZED SPORTS. KIDSPORT PROVIDES SUPPORT TO CHILDREN IN ORDER TO REMOVE FINANCIAL BARRIERS THAT PREVENT THEM FROM PLAYING ORGANIZED SPORT.

OUR MISSION

KIDSPORT IS PART OF A NATIONAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION that runs at a local level. KidSport Edmonton is 1 of over 178 local chapters across Canada that works locally to identify needs in the community, raise funds and supports programs that create new opportunities for kids to participate in sport. Simply put, KidSport believes in the power that sport can have on a vulnerable kids’ life, teaching them valuable life lessons and in the long-term, helping shape and create, active and healthy Edmontonians down the road.

OUR FAMILY HAS BEEN GREATLY BLESSED by the support of KidSport as it has allowed us to continue to have all four of our kids in hockey.

Our kids love playing hockey & being a part of a team. Thanks for all your support, KidSport!

The organization was in a fortunate positon to be in a strong cash position at the beginning of 2017 so the decision was made to provide support to Edmonton families during what we knew was going to be a tough year for many. To this end we once again set records for the number of kids funded (3,179) and the total amount of funding provided ($566,314). These are over 20% increases from our 2016 numbers.

We continued to work alongside our many partners to help make it, ‘So ALL Kids Can Play!’, specifically our friends at Sport Central. Working together to ensure that we are breaking down barriers that prevent 1 in 8 Edmontonian kids from participating in sport1. The two non-profit organizations Team up, while Sport Central provides sporting equipment and KidSport covers the cost of sport registration fees. We have also continued collaborating within the KidSport family, working with KidSport Alberta, KidSport Calgary and other local chapters to ensure that we are helping as many kids as possible.

With an outstanding Board of Directors, who are individually filled with passion and drive, along side the Fund Development and Bids for Kids Committees, a staff of 2.5 and numerous event volunteers, face the task ahead of us which is to continue to grow the number of kids we are supporting in a sustainable model.

We want to once again extend our sincere gratitude to the Eldon and Anne Foote Fund who continue to annually provide a substantial grant through the Edmonton Community Foundation. This allows us to help sustain and support the growing numbers of kids and families in need in Edmonton.

We also appreciate the ongoing support of our longstanding corporate and sport partners, Homes by Avi, United Cycle and the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association. KidSport Edmonton was also honoured to be a part of the Birdies for Kids program, presented by AltaLink through the Shaw Charity Classic.

Outside of our key role in raising funds to match the increasing need for support to Edmonton families, much of the focus of the Board of Directors was on finding a new Executive Director for the organization. We are very excited to bring on Dayna Hyman as our new full-time Executive Director. Dayna joins us from our good friends at KidSport Calgary and we are looking forward to seeing where KidSport Edmonton will grow with Dayna at the wheel!

MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER

2017 was another record year for KidSport Edmonton. During 2017 we funded 3,179 applications (20% increase since the previous year) for children to play sport who otherwise may not have had the chance. Despite year over year growth in KidSport’s revenues, which ended the year at over $580,000, the organization realized a loss of approximately $90,000. Over the past two years KidSport Edmonton has aggressively expanded our funding program to utilize, what at the outset was, a sizeable cash reserve. That is no longer the case. Demand for the KidSport Edmonton funding program has quickly surpassed our financial resources and in 2018, now more than ever, we need the community to step up to the plate and support the funding program, in order to avoid ever having to say ‘no’ to a qualified applicant.

Revenues in 2017 were driven to a substantial extent by the generous grants from the Eldon and Anne Foote Fund, provided through the Edmonton Community Foundation. KidSport Edmonton’s Bids for Kids had another banner year, which was particularly helpful during the busy fall registration period. The Board of Directors and the Fund Development Committee has been working diligently to advance the fundraising programs and continue building on the partnerships in place today. In 2018 we will announce new partnerships, programs and events to connect further within the Edmonton community.

This year we expect to receive 3,500 applications from families in need. Compared to the 2,000 applications received in 2015, the demand for our services has nearly doubled in only 2 years! Thank you all for your continued generosity and support in helping us meet this need. We look forward to an amazing 2018.

GREG BAINBRIDGE TREASURER, KIDSPORT EDMONTON

KIDSPORT EDMONTON’S ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT, BIDS FOR KIDS presented by JV Driver, was a huge success in its sixth year. The networking and silent auction event raised over $70,000 in net revenue and had over 200 people in attendance. The funds raised through this event will help KidSport Edmonton to keep pace with the demand for KidSport grants which has increased considerably over the past few years. Special thanks to Mark Connolly for being the emcee for the evening.
