Dear Kiwanians, there is no doubt that the month of a KIEF President’s year fly by very fast. I feel that it is not long since we celebrated Easter and now we already in May. Here is a few highlights of the spring of your President : International President Alan Penn has honoured the Chairman of the ASPAC region and the President of the European Federation by inviting them to participate at every Board Meeting of Kiwanis International in the fiscal year 2011-2012. This practice has been to benefit both for the regions outside North America but I have also received several messages that the members of KI Board – The Presidents and the KI Trustees – also have received much needed knowledge from the Kiwanis world outside North America from this practice. Dear Kiwanians, there is no doubt that the month of a KIEF President’s year fly by very fast. I feel that it is not long since we celebrated Easter and now we already in May.

Here is a few highlights of the spring of your President :

International President Alan Penn has honoured the Chairman of the ASPAC region and the President of the European Federation by inviting them to participate at every Board Meeting of Kiwanis International in the fiscal year 2011-2012. This practice has been to benefit both for the regions outside North America but I have also received several messages that the members of KI Board – The Presidents and the KI Trustees – also have received much needed knowledge from the Kiwanis world outside North America from this practice.

In Mid-April I had the pleasure to participate at the Board Meeting in Indianapolis. These meeting gives us a chance to bring forward KIEFs view on important subjects. These discussions deals with matters that has a great impact on the entire organization. Being a devoted Kiwanis leader I will also admit that at KI Board meeting has given a very valuable experience for future use.I have also had the pleasure together with my wife of being guests at Kiwanis Romania at their Convention in Oradea Romania. The city is situated very near to the Hungarian

Border in the east so we decided to fly into Budapest. There we were picked up by a Kiwanis friend and driven through Hungary and into Roamnia. Two wonderful days we spent there in the company of devoted and excited Kiwanians. It was also both an honour and pleasure for me to witness the organization of a new club Kiwanis Club of Art Oradea with many artistic and charming ladies.

The first weekend of May we have also had some delightful days in Bad Ischl and in Salzburg in Austria.

First we participated at the Austrian Convention meeting and making many new friends. These days will truly be pleasant memories for Kari and me for life. Our hosts Edith and Walter also took us on a very interesting sightseeing in the wonderful city of Salzburg- the town of the musical genius W.A Mozart. It is an old city with a very interesting history and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Home again we have spent many hours trying to create a status of the Bergen Convention. WE have had some problems in getting enough delegates to the General Assembly and many, many hours has been spent trying to convince people to take part at the convention. For the President the convention is a very important meeting and a lot of preparations has to be done, many speeches to be written and of course to make sure that everythinh is ready for a great Convention in my home town Bergen.

Both Kari and myself are really looking forward to welcoming many of to Bergen, and it will also be great to meet many of you at the KI Convention in the wonderful city of New Orleans.

Have a wonderful spring everybody with much service, happiness and FUN.

Yours in Kiwanis service the President

Five regionsA special International Committee on Constitution and Bylaws chaired by Robert

McCurley, a past governor of the Alabama District, was appointed to draft the necessary amendments to carry out the principles expressed in the Administrative Resolutions. The delegate body approved the amendments in 1987. Based upon membership figures at that time, five electoral regions were set up:

Region I All districts that include one or more of the fifty states of the United States.Region II Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District and the Western Canada District.Region III Europe, including all European Districts.Region IV Asia-Pacific Area, which includes the Districts of Australia, Japan, New Zealand-South Pacific, Philippine Luzon, Philippine South and the Republic of China.Region V All other areas of the world.

The Constitution set forth how the members of the Kiwanis International Board would be elected : either by being given a guaranteed seat from a region or being elected directly by the delegate body at an annual convention. The amendments also provided that when the membership in Region V reached 2.5% of the membership of Kiwanis International and when that figure was maintained for two consecutive years, then Region V would qualify for a guaranteed seat on the Board.

Another important provision called for an increase in guaranteed seats outside of the United States when membership in the United States decreased below 80% and an increase of one additional seat when the percentage was below 75%. A new study of the KI Board structure was mandated if the membership figure in the United States dropped below 70% of the total organisations membership.

To amend the Constitution and Bylaws and add the Federation structure to it was the next step forward.

Dear Kiwanis friends! It is with the greatest pleasure I invite you to attend the 2012 European Convention –

taking place June 8-10 2012 in Bergen, Norway. Bergen is the second largest city in

Norway, situated at the West Coast of Norway, a coastline also known as ”The Fjord

Country”. With the 2012 K I E F convention, Kiwanis friends will gather in Bergen for the

third time, as the city hosted this popular, annual gathering in 1986 and also in 1997.

The 2012 great event will take place at the recently renovated Scandic Bergen City

conference center, situated in the heart of the city. The city of Bergen is more than 940

years old, thus rich in historic buildings, as well as modern ones, - among them you will

find the UNESCO World Heritage listed - Bryggen - area, one of the best known sites in

the city. Bergen can easily be reached by air, sea and land, as well as by the famous

Bergen railway from Oslo, crossing the high Mountain Plateau.

The Kiwanis clubs of the Bergen Region are proud to welcome you to visit Bergen in 2012

and we shall spare no effort to make your stay a memorable one.

Kiwanis Club Skien-NoraThis year Kiwanis celebrates the fact that it is 25 years since it was decided that women could be members of Kiwanis. District Norden is indeed very

proud of that the first pure female Kiwanis Club organized in Europe, probably in Kiwanis International at all, was The Kiwanis Club of Skien-Nora. We have asked

the club itself to give us the story about this, and here it is.

“We started as a SINAWIK club in 1973; at that time women were not allowed taking part in Kiwanis. However, in the year 1984/85 the women partly were allowed to join in the organization, without right to vote. Our club was named KIWANIANNE-SKIEN. Kiwanianne lasted for 3 years. We had a president, secretary and treasurer. We were allowed taking part in Conventions, but without the right to vote, and we paid a small fee to Kiwanis.Kiwanis International Convention in USA in June 1987 decided that women could take part as complete Kiwanis club members. Soon after the District Norden Convention 1987 we were informed that we could apply for membership. Already established as Kiwanianne club, much of the paperwork was already done.We thought it would be nice to become the first pure female Kiwanis Club, and in co-operation with our sponsor club – the Kiwanis Club of Skien – and the District Governor Vegar Bjøranger, we made an application. When Governor Vegar was on a visit in the United States, he brought our application, and we were very happy when he returned with

the message from Kiwanis International that Kiwanianne Skien now was accepted as a Kiwanis Club. The date of our organization is the 23rd of October 1987.A t a m e e t i n g t h e 4 t h o f November 1987 with Lieutenant Governor Lars Gøran Svensson and the Pres ident o f our sponsoring club Finn Helge Gisholt we were presented the Organization Charter, and they w i s h e d u s “ W e l c o m e t o Kiwanis”. Now we were in!!!! The Charter celebration took place the 15th of January 1988”.

Now, 25 years later the club is sti l l going strong, with 22 members. They are doing a very good job and have several projects running. They also participate in joint efforts as Burn Camp, the Gurvika Lodge, Eliminate and many others. And we have to mention the Kiwanis Nora Orphanage Home in Darjeeling, India - named after the club. They built in 2010-2011 a children’s house and they

support the project yearly. Four members of the club went to India in October 2011, attending the opening ceremony.

fund and help “ELIMINATE project”

"Kiwi for Kiwanis" or "K for K" is a self-financing project of the Kiwanis Clubs of Division "Calabria 2" undertaken to fund local services but also the international service "ELIMINATE". The international ELIMINATE Project, created in collaboration with UNICEF, aims to eliminate the

TMN (Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus that kills approximately 60,000 children annually in 40 countries), through the purchase and administration of specific vaccines."K for K" is based on the sale of Kiwi fruits in the streets, in public squares, on the churchyards, etc, during or in conjunction with celebration of INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD (20 th of November) also by specific conference and simultaneous presentation of “K for K” fundraising project and ELIMINATE project. In two days, all togheter and in various cities work members of the Kiwanis clubs Division: Magna Grecia "Luigi Giugno" (Bovalino), Reggio Calabria, Reggio Calabria "Mediterranean Cities", Reggio Calabria "City of the Straits", Reggio Calabria "Reghion 2007," Villa San Giovanni) and Kiwanis Junior clubs (Reggio Calabria, Reggio Calabria "Reghion 2010", Villa San Giovanni). The Kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa, cv. Hayward) are offered free by the agricultural cooperative "Monte" located in Polistena (RC), to witch go the thanks of the great Kiwanis family. The project started with the intent to create a replicable model in each area and in each Kiwanis Division, using Kiwi fruit (which is sold in all Italy) and using, for marketing opportunities, that this fruit presents in his name the “K” letter to associate Kiwanis name: from this concept born "K for K".The project, which is now a consolidated format, it’s based on coordination of all interested clubs and on a strategy of advertising and integrated communications on a large scale with the use of local press, TV, big posters, Facebook, website (www.kiwiforkiwanis. it).The success of the initiative is also based on the rational management of activities that have allowed us to collect for ELIMINATE and for local services 6.800,00 euro in the year 2010 and 11.200,00 euro in the year 2011. The Division was awarded the "Certificate of Recognition" for the year 2010-2011 for its work in relation to "K for K". We hope for further success for the coming years.

Recent activities in Poland

First we had an annual training for Kiwanis members in Poland. The training was held on 21st April in Sopot, beautiful resort town at the Baltic Sea. We had

around 30 trainees from the whole Poland and had an honor to host current President Elect of KIEF Ernst von der Weppen. Ernst was giving an update about recent developments in KIEF, especially about upcoming convention in Bergen and the changes

in the organizational rules of Kiwanis districts on a global level. These changes will also impact Polish Kiwanis status, however it should not distract attention from the main focus which is services for the children.

The training was delivered mainly by our two remarkable trainers: Bogumila Burda, current Governor Elect of Poland DIF from Kiwanis Club in Zielona Gora and Marc Jacobs from Belgium, who was a KIEF trainer to this event.

The agenda of the training covered mainly information about Kiwanis in Europe and worldwide, including update on most recent events and initiatives. Our colleagues have been also trained how to be more effective in communication of our great goals and projects to the local communities they live, how to better promote Kiwanis ideas and then

gain new members. The main message was to show to the world what good things we do and how our friendship and solidarity thrives.

The training consisted of various workshops and exercises, was very interactive and included a lot of team work. Everything was in an amazing atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect.

During the training one of our colleagues from Pulawy Kiwanis club, Waldemar Szalas, has prepared a special surprise and presented their recent, amazing achievement. The club in Pulawy has just finalized the procurement of computer tomography appliance to the local hospital. This equipment has cost around 1.5 million PLN (around EUR 360 thousands)! The appliance will be used for treatment of many children in the area. This success was possible due to the amazing job done by Waldemar and other member of Kiwanis club in Pulawy. They were able to gain support of main chemical plant in town. This is a great example of how effective Kiwanians in Poland are and other clubs will definitely follow this path.
