Delaunay Fashion DesignsWhat’s not to love about a lesson that combines fashion with

a famous artist? With this simple marker lesson, your

students can pretend to be fashion designers, focusing on

the elements of color and shape.

ABOUT SONIA DELAUNAY: Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) was best known for her use of

color but less known for her great impact in the world of

fashion. Sonia, along with her husband Robert Delaunay, co-

founded an art movement called Orphism. It was influenced

by the bright color of the Fauves but without the distracting

details. Her preference for clean lines and shapes translated

well into the world of fashion. Sonia wanted to create

clothing that allowed women to play, dance and be

active.

Tracing the figurePhotocopy the three “Delaunay Fashions

Drawing Guides” (pages 5-7) on copy

paper. Give each child a 6” x 12” piece of

drawing paper. The sulphite drawing

paper is thin enough to see the figures if

you place the drawing guide under the

drawing paper. Use a marker to trace a

figure.

To modify this lesson for younger children,

skip the tracing step and allow the

students to draw their

designs directly on the

photocopies of the

figures.

through other media.

After reading Madam Sonia Delaunay: A Pop-Up Book by Gérard Lo Monaco to introduce the works

of Sonia Delaunay, ask students questions about the artwork, the story, etc. to formally assess their

understanding of the text.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an

opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to

connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Students address this standard when completing the artist statement worksheet (located in Teacher

Aids). They are writing their opinion about the artwork they made based on how it was created and

how they were inspired.

CCSS.Math.Content.2.G.A.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the

words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four

fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

As students are observing the art of Sonia Delaunay, you could have them identify shapes they see,

note the shapes that are divided and describe how they are divided (halves, thirds, etc.).
